Actually,I think Led Zeppelin is the most overrated band of the entire "Classic Rock" genre.. They were either ripping of obcure blues artists or writing entirely sophomoric lyrics... Decent music, but entirely overrated... Honourable mention for the overrated title goes to Yes...Self indulgent BS to the extreme... WIP Posted February 6, 2011 Report Posted February 6, 2011 Actually,I think Led Zeppelin is the most overrated band of the entire "Classic Rock" genre.. Wasn't exactly my cup of tea, but my son's band does mostly Zep covers; you have to respect the band, even if you don't like Robert Plant's singing. They were either ripping of obcure blues artists or writing entirely sophomoric lyrics... They didn't rip off the blues; they, and the other Brit bands of the early 60's were the ones who introduced their fans to their musical influences. It was the 50's rock n rollers like Elvis, who were the ripoff artists; because they pretended that they created it. Honourable mention for the overrated title goes to Yes...Self indulgent BS to the extreme... Total horseshit! Even if you didn't get classical music, which provided their main jumping off point, you have to respect what they accomplished. Steve Howe won the annual Guitar Player magazine poll five years in a row. Who can argue that Rick Wakeman wasn't the greatest on keyboards of any rock band? And Chris Squire revolutionized what could be done with the bass....just listen to the bass lines in Roundabout for example. After the 70's, the collective attention span was too short for concept albums and five movement album-side songs that Yes, Genesis and Pink Floyd were doing, so they had to start making shorter, FM radio-friendly songs, and Progressive Rock died. Scotty Posted February 6, 2011 Report Posted February 6, 2011 Pink Floyd was the greatest band ever. End of discussion. Quote It is an inverted moral calculus that tries to persuade the world to demonize one state that tries its civilized best to abide in a difficult time and place, and rides merrily by the examples and practices of dozens of states and leaderships that drop into brutality every day without a twinge of regret or a whisper of condemnation. - Rex Murphy
Sir Bandelot Posted February 6, 2011 Report Posted February 6, 2011 It's not really my type of music, although I do like "Won't get fooled again" for the lyrics. I'm sure many a British soccer hooligans heart was shattered to find out, the Who were gay. Quote

wyly Posted February 7, 2011 Report Posted February 7, 2011 Pink Floyd for me... from an artists point of view I'm not sure who it was either John Lennon or Paul McCartney who said The Cream were the greatest ever... Shwa Posted February 7, 2011 Report Posted February 7, 2011 Oh, from a guitar player's perspective, Zep and Yes were in a league of their own. And David Gilmour made Pink Floyd into the band they always wanted to be. Clapton was great, The Cream were way out in front and Deep Purple had the chops. I could play them all, many of the classic solos note for note while seeing double. But none of them - not a single one - can touch Jimi Hendrix. He is the only guitar player to make me feel that I should just put the axe down and fuhgeddaboudit. Hendrix played the guitar like Miles Davis played the trumpet. In fact, it is almost embarassing to say the Hendrix played "the guitar" and Davis played a mere "trumpet." If Hendrix had lived we wouldn't even be having this thread. It would be all about how good Jimi Hendrix really was. Some of his best stuff was the Band of Gypsies Live. If you have never heard it then shut up. One of my all time favourite albums is the Who's Live At Leeds. That captured the essence of what I hoped they would have been back in the day. They had amazing albums, but it was all downhill after 'Who Are You' and Keith Moon's death. Like Zep after John Bonham. The end. As for ripping off blues artists, well, that is a long standing tradition isn't it? Even among blues artists. Do you think that Muddy Waters or Bo Diddley were entirely original? Come on now. A lot of them were "influenced" by Robert Johnson. If you listen even to some of the licks by the Brits in the early 60's you will hear some licks copped note for note, same as some of those old 40's & 50's recordings. They call them 'standards.' I don't hear anyone coming out saying they invented the 12 bar blues or some of the more familiar tags such as the one in 'Dust My Broom.' I am sure even Robert Leroy has his "influences" amongst all the nameless musicians that he heard in all the barrelhouses and dives he ventured into in his formative years. Quote

Shwa Posted February 7, 2011 Report Posted February 7, 2011 (edited) you're better than leona boyd? What does that have to do with anything. "as good as" If you want technical proficiency, see Yngwie Malmsteen However, once the 5 year old can write something equal to Voodoo Chile, then we'll talk. Yeah, I never was a big Zep fan (probably because of Robert Plant's singing) but Jimmy Page was still one of the greatest guitar players of all time. And even though I liked what Yes was trying to do, I always wished they did more stuff like the albums with Trevor Rabin, that included other vocals. And David Gilmour is a good example of why music and even musicianship is an art, and not a science that can be plotted on some sort of graph or scale. No one is going to claim that Gilmour is the quickest, or can reach the most chords (he wouldn't even make that claim himself), but what he plays, he hits clean and leaves his own unique stamp on it. His playing defined the Pink Floyd sound. But none of them - not a single one - can touch Jimi Hendrix. He is the only guitar player to make me feel that I should just put the axe down and fuhgeddaboudit. Like I said, music is art, not science! I know everyone is supposed to put Hendrix at the top of the heap, but I never liked his sound -- maybe it was way too self-indulgent and discordant for my tastes.
