Scotty Posted January 7, 2011 Report Posted January 7, 2011 And again...if our officials actually care about Afghan civilians--which sounds a bit like a dark joke, doesn't it?--then why do they refuse to assist wikileakls in redaction? If it "undermines the mission," then they could help remedy that situation. They choose not to do so. I don't see how any government organization could officially work with Wikileaks on something like this. If your neighbor breaks into your computer and takes out your diary and then asks for your help in deleting the names of girlfriends who are still married because they only want to release the stuff that embarrasses YOU are you going to give them the help they request or punch them out? Quote It is an inverted moral calculus that tries to persuade the world to demonize one state that tries its civilized best to abide in a difficult time and place, and rides merrily by the examples and practices of dozens of states and leaderships that drop into brutality every day without a twinge of regret or a whisper of condemnation. - Rex Murphy

WikiLeaks didnt break into anyones house. I better analogy is this... Someone living in your house steals your dairy and gives it to a third party. First off wanting to punch that third party is idiotic to start with. Convincing him not to make anything in your diary public would be prudent but if you have no legal means to compell that party to help protect your secrets, and they are offering to censor some of the sentitive parts for you, then it makes good sense for you to co-operate, and your lucky they are even offering to do that. bloodyminded Posted January 9, 2011 Report Posted January 9, 2011 (edited) I don't see how any government organization could officially work with Wikileaks on something like this. If your neighbor breaks into your computer and takes out your diary and then asks for your help in deleting the names of girlfriends who are still married because they only want to release the stuff that embarrasses YOU are you going to give them the help they request or punch them out? If it was going to save human lives...what kind of moral degenerate wouldn't? But let's get away from trivial analogies about private, personal lives: we're talking about the government, about the people mandated to have the preponderance of power, more right to the use of violence, and a responsibility to its citizenry. If they really wanted to protect the lives supposedly endangered, they could have done so. They choose not to do so.
