They do have basis in reality.

You know I'm in Calgary West.  You know I'm a graduate of the U of C.

You know that I'm an economist.

So you know the type of profs I've had, who I hung with.

Hello.

The Conservative Elite are here.

Don't be so dismissive.

I don't care where you went to grammar school or what profession you claim. Your posts are generally lacking any credible support, and tend to consist almost entirely of wild, raving accusations against anyone and everyone who fails to agree with your narrowly defined view of the world.

Do you really think you're convincing anyone of anything?

Even those on the left here probably think you're something of a crank.

Does anybody here know why CSIS was seperated from the RCMP in the first place? Does anybody want me to tell them?

The glib answer would be to say that the RCMP burned down a barn.

The correct answer is that Trudeau felt the RCMP did not give him adequate intelligence during the FLQ crisis. A commission of enquiry led to the creation of CSIS which at the start was largely populated with RCMP officers.

This mirrored the US distinction of the CIA and the FBI.

The Tory talking paper meant, I think, to create a department to oversee all security/intelligence/border matters as is done now in the US. I don't think there was any suggestion of re-joining the RCMP and CSIS.

Incidentally, CSIS is purely an information-gathering body. It also provides advice to other government agencies. It is not a deliberative body.

KUDOS to August.

You impress me.

:)

gj.

If in fact the Tories don't want to put them back together, that's good.

Regardless of who wins the election:

Safeguards need to put in place.

We know what happens when nobody is watching them.

(tapes erased, powers abused, corruption, cover ups, human rights abuses (Saskatoon), homosexuals get fired (cold war).)

There needs to be supervision.

The supervision might be bureaucratic and reduce the effectiveness of the police, but if we're going to go the way of effectiveness and effeciency, then there shouldn't be a Charter or any civil rights at all, because they're the most wasteful things in history.

But you know what? It's the Charter and those civil rights that contributes to making Canada great, and I wouldn't sacrifice them for anything:

The thug down the street.

17 men in an airplane.

I don't care. Sacrificing the values of a society to protect it isn't worth it.

Society should sooner die than to abandon the features that makes it great.

You seem very quick to dispense with freedom of speech in the case of "hate speech".

I've already confessed my anti-liberalism and my hipocracy.

I can't bring myself to accept that level of entropy in society.

I can handle a lot of entropy, a lot more than I suspect most people can.

But I draw the line at hate speech.

I fully confess my contradictions, and I don't try to hide them.
