Where is the loyalty? Why give a future to someone elses son or daughter - is it not normal and natural to grant your own blood or nation favour first? Of course there are those that are un-natural and false who do not have a grip on reality and are willing in a mis-guided way to put wealth in the houses of strangers?

The same attitude is pervasive with other supposed political scholars...now - my question is - When has a carreer acedemic with a doctorate ever solved a material - polical or spiritual problem plaguing humanity? F**king NEVER!

The best part is that you're writing that on a computer.

Umm have any of you ever even gone to university? There are several very different kinds of money available for students attending universities.

Grants/bursaries/loans/financial aid are intended for students who are unable to pay for themselves, to help them go through university. Such funding is already, and rightly, allotted primarily to Canadian students.

Scholarships, on the other hand, are money that universities offer to promising/exceptional students, not because the students are in financial need, but because the university wants to attract that student. Students that a university may want to recruit can potentially come from all over the world. A university provides a scholarship to a student because it thinks that having that student there may pay off in the future by bringing additional publications, prestige, or even funding to the university. A student's capability to contribute to a university is independent of their nationality. In fact, that a university gives a scholarship to these students is almost proof in itself that these are precisely the kind of "foreigners" that we do indeed want to have come to Canada.

I say we give full scholarships to anyone who wishes to become a medical doctor, provided they stay in Canada to practice medicine for a given period.

In this sense, scholarships alone wouldn't work because its not practical to prevent people from leaving the country. Canada would need to give a monetary incentive for doctors to stay in Canada.

This is a good concept that should be explored. Scholarships awarded to fill a need this country has, with a term of service included to prevent a dine and dash. Frankly this helps both Canada and those who receive the scholarship.

I'll call BS this time! My daughter is in her 3rd year of University. While she has managed to get some student loans, they were NOT guaranteed available! The government assesses your family's income and that of the student. They make some mystical calculations. Quite often someone is turned down, for no reason that makes sense. Your dad may be driving a Lada and your neighbour drives a BMW yet you get turned down and your neighbour student gets all he or she needs.

You appeared to imply that student loans are a guaranteed source of student financing. My own daughter's direct experience and that of many of her friends contradicts that premise.

I have had this experience myself. I worked for a couple years before going back to university and the student loans given to me were inadequate, forcing me to work during my schooling. This prompted an endless circle of me keeping up with school while working and receiving inadequate loans. whereas if I was fiscally irresponsible spending all the money I made, the government would have rewarded me with bursurys! The whole system for OSAP is flawed.

To him, perhaps announcing 75 four-year scholarships to be handed out each year to foreign graduate students didn’t seem controversial. Even at an annual cost of $40,000 each, it might be a pittance to help raise the profile of Ontario’s universities – a necessity if Mr. McGuinty’s government is to increase by 50 per cent the number of foreigners studying in the province. That, in turn, is supposed to help internationalize education for Ontarians, keep many of the newcomers in the province after graduation and send others home to be ambassadors.

But the value of such an investment, however marginal relative to other post-secondary expenditures, might not be self-evident to as many Ontarians as Mr. McGuinty thought. Amid lingering economic uncertainty, with voters worried about how to put their own children through school, there appears to be some backlash against spending public funds to bring in kids from abroad.

I think Radwanski's opinion on this issue hits the mark.

It was NOT an acedemic that got this computer thing going - I remember working with an old friend of Dan Akyroid..He told me that he was in California..hanging out with some white wanna be blues guitar players - they were smoking dope and drinking beer...One hippy type - and old non-acedemic acid head was going on about personal computers - Bill Gates was hanging out with these guys prior to him being BILL GATES... Gates said to the stoned hippy with the great idea..."if you are not going to use these concepts your self- I am going to run with it" - to para pharse..

Gates's father a shrewd lawyer who was clever when it came to banding - made sure that HIS son did all the legal stuff to ensure him of copy write and having power...so it was some bum that got this internet thing going - not some over educated egg head.

Now back to the scholarship issue - NO....simply NO! - You TAKE CARE - of your own people first ...we are not some host for parasites from other nations..although some liberal types like having their blood and the nations life blood sucked - as if it is noble..to give up the life giving fluid of modern life to stangers - MONEY>

Where would computers be without transistors, which stemmed out of solid state physics, which stemmed out of quantum mechanics, which in turn stemmed out of advanced mathematics? At the end of the day, all of these technological toys we have today stem out of basic research. You see what I'm getting here? The basic fronter research done by academics at public and private research institutes eventually makes its way down to useful technology. It just takes time.

Academia is where basic scientific concepts are established; commercialization comes after. You cannot have one without the other.

What did Bill Gates have to do with getting the internet going? Oh thats right. NOTHING! The internet was developed by Universities in collaboration with the US military. By the time Microsoft was on the scene, the internet was being used by thousands of people world wide. Gates did introduce Internet Explorer, a clone of Netscape Navigation, which they forced on all windows users. If thats what it takes to get credit for "getting the internet going" then I guess you score a point  .

no one person can claim to have invented the internet and as much as people like to ridicule him Al Gore was an important part of the internet development...High Performance Computing and Communication Act of 1991 was put together by Gore which in turn led to the World Wide Web browser...as much as pains people to admit it was Gore who got the ball rolling, not technically but on an organizational level... Universities are motivated by enrollment as much of their funding is based on it.

They don't care if graduating students have no real world skills and a massive debt or even if they do not plan on living here after graduating like most international students. That fact that candians subsidize international students university programs is of no concern to senior management at universities who just want the massive subsidies for every student they have, students only need 2 things for these university administrators, tuition and a pulse.

How many political science undergrads or bsc's in biology does canada really need? I've got a bsc in biology and had essentially no job skills after graduating.
