charter.rights Posted November 19, 2010 Author Report Posted November 19, 2010 I really can't recall being called a Limey by a Native, they may have, I wouldn't swear to it. I mean the go back where you came from part. So you are saying that if a Native says this, even if it includes Limey or not it isn't rascist? Were you living in Edmonton at that time? Telling someone to go back to where they came from, is another way of saying "mind your own business". “Safeguarding the rights of others is the most noble and beautiful end of a human being.” Kahlil Gibran “Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.” Albert Einstein
Oleg Bach Posted November 19, 2010 Report Posted November 19, 2010 I imagine it is not as difficult as a noble savage trying to appear scholarly... Nothing wrong with a noble savage trying to appear scholarly..other than it would make them a phoney...and if that phoney mind set is institutionalized and becomes common place it is then named civilzation. The best way to get rid of racism on all sides is to get people to understand that you get more flys with honey than vinegar. That would mean teaching people the intelligent option that love is more productive and more powerful than hate..I believed there was a man who tried passing this message on 2000 years ago and he was killed for his efforts...so I guess it is safer to hate..misery loves company and mob rule gives a sense of saftey and security..

To ignore and be ignorant is a conscious choice. Maybe we have to teach people that the right to choose does not mean choosing badly with out consequence. To choose to hate is not a good choice...It is human kindness that keeps the world from destroying itself..so far good is winning...We have had nuclear weapons for some time and are still in existance..which means that good over powers evil (stupidity) - but not by much...we can't give up or we will perish. Racism...is only a good thing if you are oppessing a race that is totally evil..no such race exists.

g_bambino Posted November 20, 2010 Report Posted November 20, 2010 As the ever eloquent Rex Murphy puts it: Don Kellar, the putative leader [of the] self-ordained (they always are) “anti-racism” activists... dismissed the part of the audience that opposed the protesters as "old white men" and "old white ladies." So apparently it's the "anti-racists" who take skin colour into account when making their judgments, and "white" is obviously deemed second-class and unworthy. Activism works some strange transmutations. Anti-racism, meet racism: You are slope-browed twins. University of Waterloo ignoramuses accomplish their doltish goal Spot on!
Who's Doing What? Posted November 20, 2010 Report Posted November 20, 2010 You mean like this? "Go back to where you came from you limey...." Nope. That is still only a pejorative. Limey is not a racist term. While technically not RACIST it sure as heck is prejudiced. Some of the most racist individualsI have come across are Natives or more correctly First Immigrants. Harper differed with his party on some key policy issues; in 1995, for example, he was one of only two Reform MPs to vote in favour of federal legislation requiring owners to register their guns. http://www.mapleleafweb.com/election/bio/harper.html "You've got to remember that west of Winnipeg the ridings the Liberals hold are dominated by people who are either recent Asian immigrants or recent migrants from eastern Canada: people who live in ghettoes and who are not integrated into western Canadian society." Nope. Wrong again. Racism: 1: a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race 2: racial prejudice or discrimination A "limey" is not a race. It doesn't fit the definition and so calling someone that name is a pejorative. Pejorative: : a word or phrase that has negative connotations or that is intended to disparage or belittle : a pejorative word or phrase. No matter how you guys try to swing it, you cannot turn pejorative into racism. “Safeguarding the rights of others is the most noble and beautiful end of a human being.” Kahlil Gibran “Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.” Albert Einstein

wyly Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 Not at all. Clarifying definitions and understanding terminology is imperative to proper communication. Using red herrings to detract from that communication makes you something of a dolt. a slur directed at an individual such as butthole, jerk or dolt does not describe the person in any manner other than their personality therefore not racist...when you slur an entire group, be it religious, ethnic or visible then you've crossed the line into racism..."limey" is an ethnic slur which makes it racist... “Conservatives are not necessarily stupid, but most stupid people are conservatives.”- John Stuart Mill

Wrong. Go read the definitions again. Racism requires the "belief" that racial differences give one superiority over the others. Racial prejudice is acting on that "belief". So if a person if using a epithet against a person of a different race in a manner to either degrade the person then it is appropriately called racism. If however, it is the same race calling another person of the same race a name it is a pejorative. A Caucasian calling another Caucasian "limey" is not racist. It doesn't meet the definition and therefor cannot by definition be racist, regardless if it is directed at an individual or a group. So calling you a "red-haired fink" is not racist, nor is calling you a yellow-bellied skunk. Calling a guy a limey is not racist. There is no way you can swing it that way. And that is exactly the reason why fighting racism in court is pretty difficult. The accuser must prove that the offender has an intent to harm in the belief that he or she was superior. “Safeguarding the rights of others is the most noble and beautiful end of a human being.” Kahlil Gibran “Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.” Albert Einstein

Racial prejudice is acting on that "belief". your selection of definition is extremely narrow to allow you to justify racist terminiology...now you're being deliberately obtuse (or maybe you come by it naturaly)... here is the UN definition of racial discrimination, note that race is defined as more than visible appearance- "shall mean any distinction, exclusion, restriction or preference based on race, color, descent, national or ethnic origin which has the purpose or effect of nullifying or impairing the recognition, enjoyment or exercise, on an equal footing, of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural or any other field of public life." KeyStone Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 So, if I were to use the term 'Towelhead', that wouldn't be racist, because it applies to a specific subset of brown-skinned people, as opposed to the entire race? Is that correct? Because towelhead is not a race?

KeyStone Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 So to be consistent with your rules for defining racism. A brown man from Trinidad calling a brown man from Pakistan a towelhead is not being racist. A white man from Canada calling a brown man from Pakistan is racist. A white man from Canada calling an white man from England a limey is not being racist. A brown man from Trinidad calling a white man from England a limey is being racist. Is that accurate or have I misunderstood something about your definition of racism?
