TOTAL POPULATION IN CALGARY: 1,071,515 --> THE OUTCOME WAS WAS SWAYED BY 27k Votes

ONLY 15% OF CALGARIANS WANTS THIS GUY IN OFFICE.

How do you figure this? By looking at the total population of the city, including children and other people who are not eligible voters? In a three-way race, he got 40% of the vote from those who were eligible to vote and chose to do so. We don't know what the remaining eligible voters wanted, since they clearly didn't bother to express it on election day, but we can't say for sure that they didn't want Nenshi or that they prefer someone else.

By the way, this was the highest turnout for Calgary in three decades: http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/Calgarians+flood+voting+stations/3692722/story.html?cid=megadrop_story

I wouldn't bother trying to reason with Mikedavid00

For fun go to search, use his name and search for rain. His statements regarding rain and elections are quite funny.

Congratulations to Calgary's new mayor. Despite what the factless Mrs. Wyly would have you believe, the other 2 candidates were right-leaning. Had only one of them run, this would be a non-story.

26% of Calgary are now visible minorities.

When a riding turns 20% visible minority, they elect Liberal (and sometimes NDP).

This is factual. Go look it up.

...

In the real world, how can a fiction elect any real natural person to a post of mayor?

In the real world, how is it possible for any real natural person to be mayor of a fiction?

I can't decide which is stupider.

latest report has him at 42% of the vote which was 53% of eligible voters a phenomenal turnout for a civic election...highest ever for a federal election is 52.5...

I've been saying this for years to you guys and it goes in one ear and out the other. It's so frustrating talking to you guys because you let your inner biased ideals overcome the facts of math and reality.

Eligible voters were 665,045.

The voting turn out was %53.24.

There was 354,070 voters.

NOW LETS BREAK DOWN THE ACTUAL NUMBERS AND DEAL WITH FACTS:

Winner - Naheed Nenshi

Actual Votes - 140,263

Runner Up - Ric McIver

Actual Votes - 112,386

3rd place Barb Higgins

Actual Votes - 91,359

---

Total VISIBLE MINORITY (majority in many parts now) poplution in Calgary: 232,465

The difference in votes between the winner and runner up is only 27,877 people.

Total ISLAMIC population in Calgary: 28,920

TOTAL POPULATION IN CALGARY: 1,071,515 --> THE OUTCOME WAS WAS SWAYED BY 27k Votes

ONLY 15% OF CALGARIANS WANTS THIS GUY IN OFFICE.

Why do the left here on the forums love immigrants? Because they know they are the only people who keep the Liberals elected. The 'party of immigrants'. That's why they are so loved and adored. We do not need these people here, they aren't required here, we have high unemployment, and don't have work for them.

BUT AGAIN, THIS GOES IN ONE EAR AND OUT THE OTHER. HOPEFULLY ONE DAY SOME OF YOU WILL 'GET IT'.

and the of the muslims over half will be kids not eligible to vote and if the rest are typical of calgarians 47% of those didn't bother to vote....

winning an civic election by nearly 28K vs big budget campaigns of well known conservative canidates is a resounding victory...

what must really hurt is Nenshi is not an immigrant

It's only a surprise for most Canadians east of Manitoba.

Indeed.

Some people apparently feel surprised that Calgarians would elect *gasp* a Muslim. Those people are only surprised because they have uninformed ideas about Western Canada that are based on stereotypes and outdated information.

Various other thoughts...

On conservative Calgary electing a leftie... It was my observation in Edmonton, at least, that people tended to vote for left-leaning politicians far more at the civic level than at the provincial or federal level. I think that maybe the difference in scope is the reason. People who may have right-leaning views on issues like law-n-order or fiscal issues might look at issues like road construction or public transit or downtown redevelopment with a completely different outlook. Instead of general principles, you're talking about concrete proposals that can be discussed on their merits.

On Harper and Prentice congratulating Mr Nenshi: I think their congratulations are probably more to do with wanting to appear friendly to brown-people rather than any actual enthusiasm for left-wing academics regardless of their race or religion.

(is Mr Nenshi a left-wing academic? I thought he was a business professor from a corporate business background. Surely he can't be *that* left wing...)

On media enthusiasm for this story: it's a "first", I suppose. I also think the media is pretty happy to report on anything positive in regard to Muslims (the fuss made over Miss USA comes to mind.) With so much negative news surrounding Muslims, I think the media are quite happy to be able to talk about a Muslim guy who did something good. Nenshi himself said that aside from reporters, nobody really cared about his religion.

I was surprised and I live in Calgary...Calgary has a lot of socially liberal people but it also has a lot of red necked racists as well, I didn't think the more liberally minded had the strength of numbers to overcome the rednecks... but that was part of Nenshi's plan in bringing out the youth vote...and you have to keep in mind the redneck vote was split between a conservative candidate and a old reform member...

which is true, when some people did make note of it they were jumped on instantly for that error, religion was not on the agenda...

then isn't it just a darn shame that with the very pointed language used in offering congratulations to Nenshi, 3 Calgary Conservative MPs, Harper, Prentice and Richardson, played right into those stereotypes - hey? Oh, wait... you're offering further clarification...

On Harper and Prentice congratulating Mr Nenshi: I think their congratulations are probably more to do with wanting to appear friendly to brown-people rather than any actual enthusiasm for left-wing academics regardless of their race or religion.

no... c'mon... say it ain't so! Here I thought the Calgary Conservative MPs (Harper/Prentice/Richardson) congratulations were genuine. Are you sure you're not being just a tad cynical in suggesting it was faked sentiment... for friendly appearances sake only... to 'curry' favour with, as you say, brown people? Brown people! Oh my!

There goes Mrs. Wyly again, hatefully labelling those that he disagrees with as rednecks. Why must you attach an ignorant label to anyone whom you disagree with? You need to do something about your own brand of hate. Your comments are disgusting. Reading your posts is exactly the same as reading a Heather Mallick column. Get some help. Maybe staring at a computer screen all day posting comments that you think matter may be starting to get to you.

As for the youth vote, I used to be very liberal minded when I was attending university. Once I entered the real world, that changed.

On the flipside, we have liberals who are pleased with his election, simply because he is brown...

I believe that's a fair comment,... Liberals, typically, are encouraged when examples of successful multiculturalism are given a raised profile. You know, something to balance out the malcontents who relish applying any manner of negativity to immigrants/immigrant families. Oh wait, Nenshi was conceived outside Canada, but actually born in Canada when his father and pregnant mother immigrated to Canada... although he's brown, does Nenshi still count?

Actually, the CBC article makes it sound like his background is pretty corporate:

While Nenshi's recent background is as an academic, he has also worked in the private sector. He spent a number of years with the international business consulting firm McKinsey & Company before forming his own consultancy business.

"I actually came to academia very late in life," Nenshi told CBC News in the run-up to election day. "I worked in business, in very big business, on large organizational change with Fortune 500 companies, typically on projects that had budgets of $100 million and up, for many years."

"A professor of non-profit management at the Bissett School of Business at Mount Royal University, Nenshi is also the managing director of the Ascend Group, a consulting firm offering management advice to the public and private sectors, and non-profit groups."... people often work in areas other than their area of expertise or interest...

But that's just your problem.

Let me state this AGAIN (remember in ear and out the other)

15% OF CALGARIANS VOTED THAT THEY WANTED THIS GUY IN OFFICE.

There was NOTHING unanimous about this. The 'special interest' that wanted him to succeed showed up to vote. The numbers prove this.

Please do not spread falsehoods about 'Calgary' wanting this guy in office.

Because they are part of the left. This is what they do.

They have done this since Nazi'ism.

I assume then you won't be spreading manure that Calagrians don't want him. The fact is of those who voted (weather report pending) more voted for him than for the others...those who don't vote don't have a legitimate right to complain....like yourself.

Ok aside from all the spin and hate that is being spread by the left here on the forum I can basically explain how this guy got elected:

-Vote splitting.

This is what really happened but I'm about watch a movie and don't have time to go into research. Yes immigrant ethnic voting was HIGHER than the average turnout and put points way into his favor.

Here's another thing..

Is he muslim? Well.. technically.

But Islam does not accept ___. I'm not here to start rumors that I have little evidence to prove (and there is some evidence), but I don't think many would consider this guy a local at the mosque.

Oh but they did,in fact he was voted in, and man, now that you are steamed and angry, well good for them.

Umm...

The majority of Calgarians did NOT elect this guy into office.

Neither Ignatieff.

This isn't against him per say, but our political system but that's another post for another day.

The dude isn't a bad evil guy. No one is saying that. I'm pointing out how easy it is in Canada to shyster your way into power.
