The Tories are telling communities who do have Economic Action Plan packages going on in their communities, that they have to put the signs up first, take pictures of them, then the government will send a rep to cut the ribbons and then they get their money....sometime. Some communities are waiting for the money and THEY are paying the interest on the projects while they wait. http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/100926/national/tories_sign_obsession

If you believe Keynesian economic theory, and you believe that the western world is in a liquidity trap (as Nobel Winner Paul Krugman believes), then the obvious antidote is credible reports of government spending.

As Jean Chretien once said, if people see cranes and skyscrapers under construction, they feel better and believe the economy is going well.

I note that Harper's federal Economic Action Plan signs do not use solely traditional Conservative Party colours. There is mostly green, and a red maple leaf. There's no picture of Harper, or even his name/signature saying "your tax dollars at work".

With Chretien, the golf ball guy, there would have been far worse.

The first reference to Keynesian economics in my short time on this board. But it amazes me how few really know what Keynes said. Admittedly he said that in times of trouble, the fed should pump money into the system. But he also said that in the good times the fed should save up big surpluses, cash, bonds and other assets. Most NDP'ers, Libs and Dems spout the first part, but even the Cons that only want to be re-elected forget about the second part.

The government can't give anything to anyone without having first taken it from someone else.
