Kliege Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 Bush-Martin G-8 chat produces nothing concreteCTV.ca News Staff BSE and softwood lumber were Prime Minister Paul Martin's key topics at a one-on-one session with U.S. President George Bush at the G-8 Summit -- although reporters also wanted to know his reaction to the latest tales of Liberal infighting. But speaking to reporters afterward at Sea Island, Georgia on Tuesday, Martin admitted he got no commitments or deadlines for when trade matters with the U.S. will be resolved. Martin said Bush "supports us in our desire to open up the market ... and that he is supportive in terms of a long-term solution to this issue." While Martin said he was "very, very satisfied and pleased" with that, he also expressed "tremendous frustration" to Bush over how long this has taken. The BSE crisis began on May 20, 2003. Since then, the U.S. border has been closed to live cattle imports from Canada. Softwood lumber has been an issue for years. In April, Bush promised that Washington would move on its ban against Canadian cattle "as soon as possible," but offered no specific timelines. And, even though U.S. officials announced it would lowered duties on imported Canadian softwood starting in January, there remains the matter of two NAFTA rulings that say there shouldn't be any duty whatsoever. "The other thing I raised with the president was the necessity of taking our border discussions, in terms of keeping the border open to commerce," Martin said. He added that Bush would talk to Homeland Security chief Tom Ridge while he would press the issue with Public Safety Minister Anne McLellan. Martin said there are new technologies that can be used to reduce border blockages. Reporters also wanted to know Martin's reaction to a statement issued by Jean Pelletier, the former chief of staff to Jean Chretien. Pelletier suggested he was being scapegoated by Public Works Minister Stephen Owen over the sponsorship scandal because the Liberals' election campaign is going so badly. "Oh, I'm really not in any kind of a position to comment on why anybody does anything, anybody else's motives," Martin said. So Much for the International Statesmen. Caanda deserves better! Quote
