bloodyminded
It's not the system that's to blame. The system would work perfectly if people weren't stupid and apathetic about it. No it wouldn't. The system is as it is because of...people! What else? "The system" and "people" aren't two discrete elements. That's the whole reason the system works the way it does now. People are too dumb and too lazy to actually learn about individual candidates stand for and instead base their opinions on two minute commercials (from the parties themselves) while they're on the couch getting fat watching Survivor or something stupid like that. There's truth to this...but people who are highly educated about the system and relatively knowledgeable about the candidates disagree violently, and often consider one another stupid..... Jerry J. Fortin
So it is put up or shut up time for Iggy then. Can he get off the dime in time to accomplish anything?
ToadBrother
The only real choice is to stop playing the stupid game. If we have to tell something to the government, there're other legitimate ways, outside of pointless and meaningless election game that right from the song, does nothing but "degrade" our intelligence. I never can wrap my head around your disdain for elections. Bring 'em on! The more the better. The more elections we have, the more money the party machines have to spend, and the less time they have to refresh their coffers. Nothing will bust parties better than being in a perpetual state of poverty, meaning they can't use that most powerful of tools, money they dole out to candidates. Candidates who win elections more on their own steam than on the pennies from heaven that the Party sends to them are far less likely to feel beholden to the Party. The only problem with that theory is that the party that represents the interests of the rich are bound to be able to replenish their funds faster, and buy their way into power even more easily than they do now. I think political party donations should be banned outright and only votes should fund the parties.
