August1991 Posted June 28, 2010 Report Posted June 28, 2010 (edited) When Harper's personal assistant is standing with the RCMP, demanding they pepper spray people, demanding they arrest people for daring to hold up signs or lift flags, as in the Chretien APEC summit, you'll have a point.Argus, do you think Harper cares any more about people opposed to the Chinese government than Chretien did?Mackenzie King at least had the principle of keeping the country together. Harper has no apparent principle at all except a vague "incremental conservatism". If Washington is Hollywood for ugly people, then "incremental conservatism" is a vague political theory for high school computer geeks. --- If I wanted the federal Liberal party, I would vote for them. Heck, when Brian Mulroney offered a genuine federal alternative, we got something. Harper is offering nothing at all. He's another WASP King. That may have worked in the 1930s but I fear that it won't work now. ---- Most important of all, this whole "incremental conservatism" idea ignores the nature of federal Canada which is regionalism. Harper has been unable to explain his ideas to two key groups: women and francophones. I could add urban voters and the Maritimes but given Canadian politics, I would just invite greater debate. (Francophones and women generally don't post here.) Without these groups (Quebec and women), Harper cannot form a majority and yet he cannot communicate with them. Try as he wants, he just can't. Draw your own conclusion. Edited June 28, 2010 by August1991 Quote
