Ontario teachers federation really freaks me out. From their purchases of large/controlling interests in a range of major corporations to their repeated political declarations on a wide range of topics that they have no business declaring anything about, they have morphed into something far different than a group looking after the fair work conditions and pay of its member. The kind of power the OTF has acquired is the greatest danger posed by unions, particularly public sector unions.

Frankly I think we need major reform and rethinking of the whole idea of public sector unions.

You are 100% correct. The OTF telling schools not take practice teachers from Nipissing is ludicrous. This should be a major story with all major media in this country. Thanks to the National post for giving it some coverage.

I hope all teachers realize what the OTF is all about. Pay your union dues and do what we tell you, and think how e tell you or else. teachers unions are a scourge to education throughout Canada. they could care less about educating children.

Dodge the real issue by attacking mike Harris. That is weak. The OTF are a bunch of thugs.

I don't think Dancer would agree with you, IF I'm not mistaken his wife is a teacher. If I'm wrong, Sorry for the mistake, Dancer.

This is about the teachers' union, not individual teachers. There are many teachers I respect. there are many I do not. Not all teachers support their union. They are just forced to pay their dues and not cause a disturbance.

Already the OTF is backpedalling. I think in this case we likely had ONE teacher/bureaucrat working in the union who acted on his own, without consulting the rest of the gang. Not that the rest of the executive weren't as fanatic as him or her, but they surely wouldn't have been so stupid as to open themselves up to such public criticism for looking so fascist!

My guess is that the OTF is gonna back off from this as fast as they can.

They likely will back down. However, it is interesting to know the mindset of the OTF. This incident has revealed what they are truly about. They are bullies, thugs, goons....whatever else.

I'd like to teach one day in Ontario.

The short of this is - people should take notice that Mr. *cough* Dr. Haris wouldn't likely get an honorary elementary school or highschool diploma, if the ontario teachers federation had anything to say about it. It should be noted that Dr. Haris as far as I recall only finished grade 10, and left school at a younger age. As a former senior Provincial Lawmaker, and having varied political connections past and present, he is someone who still might weild political influence. Now both Nippising, and the speakers for the teachers federations are justified to share their opinions on the matter, and both opinions seem justified to a certain extent.

It was done now, so will the teachers federation honestly blacklist an academic institution for political reasons, or reasons I don't understand? This is yet to be seen, but this doesn't mean that Nipising teachers will be "unable to find work in "pro haris" schools, should they exist. Or that no means of employment would exist for those who go to school in Nipising - but I think this is a rather drastic situation, for a school that meets qualifications.

The teachers federation is very powerful in my opinion, but I would be suprised if they actually carried out their statements, but this remains to be seen.

correction: "Harris first attended Waterloo Lutheran University (now Wilfrid Laurier University) but left after a year" enrolled at Laurentian University and North Bay Teacher's College where he received his teaching certificate. He was employed as an elementary school teacher at W. J. Fricker Public School in North Bay where he taught grade seven and eight mathematics for several years in a new open-concept class of 120 students. He continued his previous career as a ski-instructor at Nipissing Ridge on weekends as well as working at his father's fishing camp during the summer season. He eventually left the teaching profession.. Harris was first elected to public office as a school board trustee in 1974"
