The Conservative government will be cutting 245 jobs from agencies, boards and commissions, a move that will save Ottawa more than $1 million, Treasury Board President Stockwell Day announced Monday. Source

I don't understand how it's only saving $1 million dollars though. As 1,000,000 divided by 245 is 4,081.63 so I don't know where they get only $1 million from. You figure government jobs are getting paid at least $100,000 a year plus severance, plus expense accounts, plus benefits plus pension premiums. At minimum this will save $24.5 million most likely more.

This is a great start. Limiting the size fof government is a good thing. Now to really start cutting the fat in the next budget and get rid of the political party funding.

It's a fairly superficial savings.

The vast majority of those positions have not been filled in over a decade.

You have the answers right in your paragraph about why it would only save $1mil and not $25.

Edit: and yeah what keystone and smallc said.

First, these aren't salary positions, they're advisory positions with per diems that can be very small. Second, and someone else said, many of them haven't been filled in a long time. Pure optics.

Wasn't all of this discussed in the already started budget thread?

It's a start at the evry least and is more then the Liberals would cut. They would've raise taxes for sure. They certianly wouldn't cut any jobs.

You have to be kidding. Do you know what the Liberals did to the public service in the 90s? They cut over 50K jobs in order to balance the budget. They cut every department to the bone...and then, they cut taxes when it was all done. That's real fiscal conservatism. This is phoney. It's appropriate for the times I think, and I would say it's a good budget (better than cutting to the bone) but don't pretend that federal Liberals in recent history have spent more than Conservatives.
