So you agree he is not willing to take a stand on something that is very beneficial to Atlantic Canada.

Although that statement isn't fair because when have we ever seen Ignatieff take a stand.

By take a stand, do you mean like the stands Conservatives take: yelling, attacking, foaming at the mouth with spittle spewing forth, accusing you of anything from supporting child pornography to being a Taliban sympathizer or dupe? I guess you are so used to this methodology you miss or discount quiet words saying serious things.

Oh now you want to talk spin from elections past, what kind of party would have you looking down the barrel of a gun in an attack ad.

Now please show me one issue that Ignatieff hasn't waffled on. How many lines has he drawn in the sand, how did the report card thing go?

Again why won't he stand up and protect the Atlantic fishers?

No I think he means take a stand like "Your time is up" remember that was that period for like a week where he promised to bring down the government every chance he got then he got scared and voted with them on everything after that. What a leader.

However, I think the commercial seal hunt is doomed. The writing is on the wall. Seal fur is about as popular as asbestos, and soon the only demand for seal will come from Chinese witch-doctors who use seal gonads in making the ancient herbal voodoo equivalent of Viagra.

Kimmy, you do realize that while the EU bans Canadian seal products they have no such ban on themselves? That European seals have and are being harvested?

With that being true, somehow I doubt if the harvest will ever disappear. There are Inuit in northern European latitudes. It's also not just the meat. It's actually mostly for the fur and despite the efforts of PETA fur is still popular.

The EU politicians just took a cheap shot at Canada that they thought would have no repercussions. While Ottawa seems to delight in embarrassing them when they attend summit meetings over here, some of us take it a bit farther. I have been paying more and more attention these past few years as to the country of origin for the food and products I buy. I avoid Chinese food products for the obvious reasons given the poisoning scandals we've all witnessed but I also am starting to turn away from European products, because of the seal product ban.

I don't know if I'm all alone and I'm under no illusions that my efforts may be more than a spit in the ocean but it makes ME feel better! I have always believed that people should experience the consequences of their choices, ESPECIALLY politicians! I don't think I'm any threat to IKEA's business but I have found other folks in the supermarket aisles reading the labels, the same as me!

Most of them are women. Unlike me, who is mostly motivated by memories of seeing that brave lad stand in front of the tank in Tiananmen Square, the ladies care more about bad additives. There was the stuff in the pet food that killed a lot of pets, chemicals in dairy products, lead paint on kids' toys and a host of others. One women explained that she understood that from time to time any country could have problems but it appeared to her that China had more than most. What's more, with a domestic source she felt there was at least some chance of addressing a problem but when it came from another country little or nothing could be done. When she was rejecting products she no longer cared about price. A cheaper can of peas that came from China was no bargain to her if it risked the health of her children and family.

So although I don't drink much anyway there are a lot of very fine domestic wines and I have no need to buy any from a EU country.

Do unto others as they have done unto you. It's the only way to get through to some boneheads!

Ignatieff doesn't have to try and whip everybody in line.......but he should have shown the leadership to discourage anti-sealing legislation from being brought forward - even if it is coming from the Senate. Let everyone voice their opinion - but no legislation. Even if Iggy wants to play the "I can't control the Senate" card.....he should have clearly stated his disappointment in Mr. Harb's bill and encourage him to withdraw it....that is, if he truly supports the Sealing industry.

I have family who fish, and seal, it is how they eat. I would never take that away from them like some people who live in the city and don't understand would. Let these people eat, raise a family, and prosper. If you don't then you have no right to complain when they end up on welfare.

Well said. This is how I feel about everything though. The whiners are the ones in Toronto and the other big cities and they're constantly trying to tell the rest of Canada how we should live and how to think.
