DON"'T use the F1 button on your computer because you will get malware and the patch to get rid of it won't be out until March 9th. http://ca.tech.yahoo.com/blogs/the_working_guy/rss/article/4373

Are people still using XP?

I thought M$ was going to stop issuing updates for that OS. People really need to upgrade Windows 7 as you won't have access to patches to guard against zero day viruses and such if you continue to use an old platform.

XP is still the OS of choice for most businesses. It's a crap load of money to convert everything to a newer OS. Applications need to be tested on the Win7 environment before it's deployed across the board along with security, ect ect .. it's a huge job.

I just upgraded to Win 7 from XP for my home PC. There was no way in hell I was touching Vista. XP is still a pretty solid OS.

Not to mention this looks more of a problem with the browser and Visual Basic and not XP specifically.

If you feel you are infected. Boot into safe mode and run MBAM (Malware Bytes) and ComboFix.

Also,,, if you use Chrome or FireFox, you should be safe from this exploit.

Yeah I did the same thing. Upgraded from Xp to Windows 7 a few months ago. I avoided the Vista for the same reasons you specified.

Vista overall was an alright OS. The 3rd party driver support was completely lacking in Vista though. Compatibility and such. Plus with Vista, it was new territory, the 64-bit world. Companies had to struggle to get 64 bit drivers for Vista. And they never seemed to work right because of the way Vista was built. Not a lot of stuff was certified by Windows to work properly with Vista. I mean that does not prevent you from installing programs and drivers, they were just not guaranteed to work right, if at all.

Win7 drastically changed this because the whole core of the OS was rebuilt and reorganized. Win7 is a freakin dream. It makes my two year old systme perform like it never has. Everything runs better. And I was able to find the proper 64 bit drivers for most of my hardware. My USB music peripherals still run on 32 bit because my software is 32 bit. Which is minor, everything works as expected in win7.

I've been exploring around in win7, and I am amazed on how well it is organized now. To bad they could not get this in Vista.

Microsoft always does this though, they have a record of it. Look at Windows 95 and 98 and on to 98SE. Now we have Vista then Windows 7.

They always seem to release an OS then follow it up a couple years later with another OS that is everything the previous OS was supossed to be.

I liked Xp as well as used it for a long time, I also like Win 2k a lot as well and still use it on one of my boxes. So far Win 7 seems to be very good and stable. Time will tell as with everything.

Funny you did not mention M.E. the ME edition .. (Millennium Edition). Now THAT was a horrible OS.

I also was on 2k until I had to upgrade. Only because my pals were tired of waiting for my box to reboot if I had issues. That box always had hardware issues. Then I went to XP changed some hardware and it was much better.

If you read the article you can see that the problem is, as always, with Internet Explorer, not with Windows XP. Windows XP is still a perfectly fine OS and there is no real reason as yet to upgrade to Windows 7 unless you want to play games that require DirectX 10 or higher or if your computer has more than 4 GB of ram.

Anyways, use Firefox and you won't have this or the vast majority of other security problems.

Yeah I had a paragraph about ME but took it out, I guess I should've left it in. ME was the absolute worst Windows ever released. I think it was supossed to be basically a patch for Win98 to fix its problems or some such, I cannot recall exactly, I could be wrong. However, yeah it was really terrible, I had it then quickly went back to 98SE.

ME is what taught me to be careful about new Windows releases, when Vista and I just didn't even bother with it, hehe. Same goes for Win7, I wasn't sure whether to get it or not but I tried it and it works surprisingly well. I was honestly pleasantly surprised by W7.

@Bonam, yeah that should be a given to anyone with WinX. I haven't used IE in years. It's always going to have the most exploits against because it's the most widely distributed browser in the world plus Microsoft has notoriusly sloppy coding on some of their projects. It may have improved now I'm not sure but I still don't fully trust all of it.
