Pondering the protesters in Vancouver and watching the opening of the Olypmpic (2 minutes worth), I began to wonder after hearing some very poor mainstream pop vocals and a very scarey machine like opera singer dressed in gold with a huge Afro, make all the people feel classy. It appeared that superficality and some sort of narcistic glow had taken over the bulk of the population.

The protesters and there were few - dressed in black and some where young university type females who would skip over to a window and give it a wack. What I did notice about the dignitaries is that all of them were flakes including the proud and arrogant Donald Sutherland - who I remember years back flew into a rage because he did not have a silver tea set while doing voice overs. Most of the big shots were proud and in need of assurance rich folks.

They sat there as if the gods had returned and the "spirit of competion" which I believe stimulates the worst in people and not the best. The pitiful complimentary done to the still warm but dead luger was obsense once you viewed his poverty stricken family back in Georigia. Is it possible that the socially active protesters are actually very social and compassionate people and the dirty unwashed that sat like Romans in the stands along with their bosses are actually the anti-social ones?

It maybe that a huge reverse in what is good and evil has taken place. The majority is now anti-social while the persecuted people that actually care about humanity are relegated to the level of common crimminals? The majority no matter how debauched they be gain strength in numbers and support along with a blind courage because now there are simply more bad people than good people.

The Olympic once they pull up and go will cause no significant social change. The poor will still wallow about the streets of down town Vancouver. Afghanistan will continue moving towards the stone age with the help of the well meaning west...and you and I will look about and wonder why relative moralism is now the new state sponsored religion.

I think this is the best post I have ever seen you write!

Not drinking today. How do you think I lasted this long - being a fall down destructive self mutlating drunkard has never been my style.

Just would like some open minded opinions on what we consider civilized these days - who is benevolent in the true sense and who is not. Are corporate entities that give to so-called charity really giving - when they get a tax break for doing so? It sounds more like they are profiting and in effect not giving but taking - that's my point..who is social and who is actually anti-social these days?

Probably over a billion dollars it will cost for these Olympics. Thats well over budget and the area will be paying off that bill for decades.

Vancouver needs to get its damn priorities in check. They have huge drug and homeless problems. The downtown lower-east side is the poorest neighbourhood in Canada. Would have been much better to put that money into helping solve these social problems than a massive sporting event, as nice as it is.

It's the weather. They all like the weather here.

Donald Sutherland was the son-in-law of Tommy Douglas the pusherfounder of our health care system. He should be arrogant and proud. Helping so many people get health care.

No I didn't imply you are that, but you did write that you had a few drinks, in your previous post on "Afghanistan Failure or Success". THen you unleashed this precious gem. The only reason I can't add something more is that you've already said it all.

I watched the "black-hoodies" on the streets of Vancouver with their violence of mashing windows etc. even though I do agree with their views, I do NOT agree of their methods! I would hope that these people who are there on the street, doing their thing, show up at the voting polls and do their thing in the next election.

But surely Oleg this is not news to you?

Yes, god forbid we spend money on something besides lazy bums, something that might actually be of interest to the productive members of society. Vancouver already pours ridiculous sums of money into the endless black hole of homelessness and drug addiction, with the only effect being that more homeless and drug addicted people come to Vancouver.
