jefferiah Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 The unplanned moment when the cauldron did not rise and you see the torch lighters down there waiting and smiling like "OH man can you believe this?" And then they finish it anyways. That's Canada right there. Rest of the show. Blahhhhh Quote "Governing a great nation is like cooking a small fish - too much handling will spoil it." Lao Tzu
g_bambino Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 torch not working, no excuse for that...it's one thing for a performer to miss their cue, quite another when the final spectacle fails for technical reasons.... Ah, how soon we forget. Does nobody recall the opening ceremony of the 2000 games in Sydney, where, after Cathy Freeman lit the penultimate flame, the cauldron then proceded to rise up an inclining waterfall, but, half way up... it jammed? It was a long enough wait to get it going again that it got awkward; and, in that case, there was no contingency. The cauldron either went up, or it didn't. So, yeah. Relax. Quote
msj Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 I didn't say I thought it was a big deal that they were late, I said that I thought it was a bigger deal than probably anything else that went wrong. When you give people head of state status, you would think that they could at least show up on time. I loved the performance last night, I thought it was breathtaking, and I was very proud of VANOC and Canada. Frankly, I think you're grouping people and calling us "those people" is a bit juvenile. Perhaps you should nominate yourself for gold? I give myself Gold for annoying people like you and amusing myself. That's all. Nothing personal, smallc, I really do like what you have to say most of the time but you are being very "small" in a thread that was started off as very small (as in molehills) and, as such, deserves my rather small derision. dizzy Posted February 14, 2010 Report Posted February 14, 2010 (edited) Well, first off, I really like Lloyd Robertson, I think he's the best National News anchor there is in North America...and second, I like the enthusiasm with which CTV, TSB, and Rogers Sports Net have put all of this together. I like that they've partnered with APTN and OLN and OMNI and that this games are being broadcast within Canada in 22 languages. I think that CTV is new at this, and it may take them some time to get it all right, but overall I think they're doing well. Yeah, watching moguls now and an watched some normal jump and short track just before. I am loving the quality of the feed and the option to watch different events across the ctv spectrum (tsn , sportnets, main network, etc). EDIT: Goddyamn! I missed this one on NBC! http://yuill.ca/archives/nbc-the-story-of-michael-j-fox-who-ran-across-canada-for-cancer# Edited February 14, 2010 by dizzy Quote

I watched an interview with Nancy Greene this morning who, along with the other final torchbearers, was privy to the technical direction conversations by way of her earpiece. She said the Atkins calmly took in the news that the fourth wasn't working and had the system reprogrammed to its fall back position for the remaining three. They had a contingency plan and they executed it. Quote
jbg Posted February 14, 2010 Author Report Posted February 14, 2010 I would like to take back the Gold medal from JBG and give it to wyly with a silver to smallc and the bronze to JBG. The medals are awarded for being one of "those people." I wonder what your blood pressure must be like being so anal retentive and obsessive compulsive. Chill, man, it's just a glitch and maybe some bad traffic. Huh? I don't follow. Quote Free speech: "You can say what you want, but I don't have to lend you my megaphone." Oleg Bach Posted February 14, 2010 Report Posted February 14, 2010 Huh? I don't follow. SMART! Don't follow anyone - the Olympics is about following. Nothing has changed other than the fact that entertainment is now evenly split between war and sport..in time the Roman like games will be back and we can be truely amused in a nationalistic social state where we can be shocked and awed all day long. jbg Posted February 14, 2010 Author Report Posted February 14, 2010 Also how would they present Bernardo/Homulka, or the local wonder Picton? Smallc Posted February 15, 2010 Report Posted February 15, 2010 For Wyly, according to Katrina Lemay Doan, they tried to open the cauldron door manually, but it wouldn't budge, so they moved to plan B. It wasn't as unplanned as you thought. Quote
