Shwa Posted January 6, 2010 Report Posted January 6, 2010 A story from the Toronto Star today on a memorial in Pelham, ON for slain teen Aqsa Parvez, who was allegedly killed by her father and brother on December 10th, 2007. Their trial is not slated to go until January 10th, 2011 and the pretrial information is under a publication ban. The gist is that a couple of people erected a memorial granite bench in Pelham, which has no connection to the murdered girl at all. An inscription on the bench reads, "Remembering new Canadians lost to the quest of integrating cultures – In Loving Memory of Aqsa Parvez – Remembered and Free." Interesting quote: "The memorial isn't against the Muslim faith. It's against the fact this young girl was murdered, allegedly for trying to integrate into Canadian culture." Does this sort of memorial truly reflect small-town Canadian values or is the sentiment much more widespread? Quote

They come here for material reasons for the most part and some of the old schoolers are very prejudice...In time they will understand that some if not most Canadians are as godly as they are..that we are a good and kind people...and mixing with us is a good thing...I see signs of it happening now...but..there are also signes of segregation forming and a type of snooty elitism...I see this smugness and contempt within the Ethiopian Christian Orthodox community also...Give it time..we will unite..but not as long as their are visions of sugar pumbs and ideas of conquering us dancing in their little heads.
