The Conservative government will introduce new rules this fall that extend parental benefits to the swelling ranks of self-employed Canadians, many of whom have complained they cannot afford to have children and run businesses at the same time.

...legislation will be introduced before Parliament's Christmas break....

Source/Full Story

Another great example of our PM standing up for average Canadian working families.

This should help the self employed greatly have some more children hopefully to boost our birthrate.

Canadians should be proud to have a PM who isn't afraid to roll up his sleeves and get dirty working on behalf of Canadian families.

Especially now at this time when the economy need it most. Real EI reform.

During 13 years of Liberal reign the only EI reform we say was the gutting of the EI surpluses.

PM Harper is bravely putting Canadian families first, even in the face of having 2 of the 3 parties voting against him, he still manages to push on and give hard working Canadian families what they need most when they need it...respect.

Bravo PM....Bravo!

Yes, it's quite something to watch him reverse himself to hold on to power. Truly a performance.

That's politics. You think politicians are honest? They're all liars. The trick is to pick the liar who's on the way up and that is clearly the Tories. They know what Canadian working families need and are prepared to deliver.

One minute you're praising him as Mr. Family Man, the next minute your conceding that the whole damned thing was a cynical ploy.

The opposition parties were calling for EI reform six months ago. Why is Harper suddenly in the last few weeks seeing the light a sign of his benevolence, but opposition demands for reforms to help workers deal with the economic crisis not?

This, folks, is why partisanship is a disease akin to cancer of the brain. It eats the rational and memory centers, leaving the person nothing more than a cheerleader with the emotional and intellectual depth of a billboard.

According to press reports this was in their last election platform. I fail to see, then, how this can be construed as some kind of "reversal".

That's why I didn't respond further. It was obvious that these people were reacting out of partisanship and will likely oppose anything out forward by the Tories. It makes me laugh how many people still try to claim that the Tories are a right wing party. They are certainly not governing like one much of the time.

They're leader Ignatieff has shown them the way to ruin. Vote down every proposal no matter what it is. Seems to be working out great for Ignatieff, LPC supporters need to start realizing that voting against something without reading it or adding to the dicussion isn't good governance.

At the same rate I do support some EI reform. Imo it's been long overdue. I hate spending of my tax money but in this instance it makes sense. As opposed to the 45 day work year that Ignatieff tried to put forward.

This has become way too much of a partisan matter. Harper knows he's living with a minority government, so yes he has given way to the opposition parties at times to do what's best for Canadians. Minority parliaments are woefully slow at getting anything done but the good thing is that it holds the government's feet to the fire. The EI reforms are needed and it is a good thing that the opposition parties forced Harper to make the changes.

If you understand, no explanation necessary. If you don't understand, no explanation is possible.

PM Harper is doing more for Canada in four years then the Liberals did in 13. I don't remember the Liberals doing anything for EI other than using its surpluses to balance their budget.

They changed the rules so only 40% of people who pay into it can actually claim if they lose their job.

Ahm, no, that was done years ago. Can't say for sure if it was Chretien's government or Mulroney, but it's been that way quite some time.

It was Chretien's. The rules were created in 1994 and even more so in 1997. I was referring to Mr Canada saying he can't remember the Liberals doing anything but stealing from EI but they also made it harder to get is what I am pointing out.

Yes, that's right. First they scoop up the surpluses and place them in the general revenue stream then they make EI harder for working families to collect thereby hiding the gutting of EI.

The Liberals balanced the books on the backs of working families who suffered undue hardships at the hands of the Chretien/Martin/Dion Liberals. Hard working families who should've been able to collect were shown the door. All in the name of protecting what the Liberals have done...this is shameful, disrespectful and at the very least disingenuous.

Working families have always been the ones to suffer the most of the burden this isn't a new devolopment.

Which is why PM Harper is working hard to re balance the EI fund after years of Liberal neglect. We're finally starting to right this ship that left in shambles by the Liberals we cannot change now we must stay on coarse and give the PM a stronger mandate, a majority mandate so we can have some really effectve change for Canada.

The Conservatives are the only party to take action in implementing positive EI changes. The Liberals gutted the fund then made it harder for working families to collect in times of dire need. First the Tories and PM Harper increased the benefit term by 5 weeks across the board, then they implemented increased benefits for long term workers and now they are ensuring benefits for the elf employed so we may increase our birthrate for Canadians.

The Liberals have done nothing, the Bloc has done nothing, the NDP are the only other party which is contributing something useful towards EI reform. Bravo Mr. Layton for siding with Canadians, Canadians that don't want an election. Only if the other two parties had the integrity you're showing at this most difficult time.
