waldo Posted September 27, 2009 Report Posted September 27, 2009 ...he seems to be adopting the position that intelligence gathered by security agencies is not useful in guarding against terrorism. well... you've now moved off your original question and the inference you drew from "something" within that article to "he seems to be". Do you actually have a quote within that article to substantiate the original question you posed or your latest derivative of same? Yours is a pathetic and glaringly transparent sham - per usual. Jerry J. Fortin Posted September 27, 2009 Report Posted September 27, 2009 The Afghan mission is bad news. It started bad and it will end bad, that is the reality we need to face. Our troops went in with nothing and they will come out with nothing. We gain nothing from the effort, even though it costs us greatly. Canada needs to rethink its position in terms of international politics. There is much to be said from many different perspectives and those things needs to be said publicly. Quote

Jerry J. Fortin Posted September 27, 2009 Report Posted September 27, 2009 Another admission that Layton was right. Good to see. Nobody is always right or wrong. The NDP have some good ideas, most folks would agree to that, but they would also say that they wouldn't trust them to run the nation. Quote

noahbody Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 Will he able to keep his anti-torture principles intact if he becomes prime minister? I've posted this before. It's Ignatieff talking about possibly having to resort to targeted assassinations and accepting tactics such as sleep deprivation techniques to fight terrorism. I agree with this version of Ignatieff on torture. IMO, calling sleep deprivation "torture" is on par with calling spanking "child abuse." That said, think this video is a huge problem for him politically. Quote
capricorn Posted October 22, 2009 Author Report Posted October 22, 2009 Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff has told a British newspaper that Canada dispatched Maher Arar to Syria to be tortured.Ignatieff made the erroneous statement in an interview published in September in The Observer while clarifying his stand against torture. --- "Canada sent Maher Arar (a Canadian engineer) to Syria, and a court found that he had been subjected to extraordinary rendition, that his claims (of torture) were true and that he had delivered no intelligence to anybody. It was a disgrace. So, we don't do it. Ever. Period. Off the table. We don't get other people to do our dirty work for us, and we don't do dirty work ever." Arar was sent to Syria by the United States in late 2002 after he was detained while in transit to Canada through JFK Airport in New York. Contrary to what Ignatieff said, no court has made findings of fact in Arar's case. A Canadian commission of inquiry – not a court – that heard some evidence in secret concluded the American authorities deported Arar under the Bush administration's extraordinary rendition program, first to Jordan and then on to Damascus, where he was jailed without charges for more than a year by Syrian military intelligence. The former Liberal government in Ottawa consistently denied it ever played a role in Arar's rendition, and the inquiry concluded Canadian officials were not directly complicit in the affair. http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/article...ng-in-arar-case I take credit for having been first to spot Ignatieff's Arar fumble in my OP where I linked the original Cooke interview of September 27. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/sep/2...ew-rachel-cooke How embarrassing for Ignatieff to have falsely accused his Liberals of having deported Arar to Syria. The enemies within are sure to be rub their hands in glee in the wake of another Ignatieff misstep. Let's look at that quote again, from Cooke's interview. "Canada sent Maher Arar [a Canadian engineer] to Syria, and a court found that he had been subjected to extraordinary rendition, that his claims [of torture] were true and that he had delivered no intelligence to anybody. Right out of Ignatieff's mouth. I read that this morning and all i could say to myself was "poor ignatieff" This quote I believes sums up why it is dangerously bad... UBC law professor Michael Byers said while public figures sometimes make mistakes, Ignatieff's statement was related to his own position on torture, "a matter on which he wrote extensively while a Harvard professor, with those writings having since been subject to intense scrutiny.""For him to get the facts wrong on the highest profile case of torture involving a Canadian citizen is deeply worrying. "It suggests a certain lack of attention to detail, and perhaps even concern, on a matter that was engaging the Canadian public, a commission of inquiry, and courts in both Canada and the United States at the very same time that he was expressing opinions on torture in The New York Times." capricorn Posted October 22, 2009 Author Report Posted October 22, 2009 I read that this morning and all i could say to myself was "poor ignatieff" I tend to feel sorrier for the Liberals and their supporters. This quote I believes sums up why it is dangerously bad... Just when cardboard cheque-gate was prominent in the limelight, the focus turns to Ignatieff's dearth of knowledge of what happened in Canada during his 30 year absence.
