wulf42
Well that is certainly a switch! the Russians are going to help the U.S. with Afghanistan....looks like Obama is making friends in unlikely places, if the Americans and Russians start working together on different projects only good can come of it! http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/090703/world/eu_russia_us Edited July 3, 2009 by wulf42
kactus
Russians only do what serves their interest. Frankly they wouldn't hesitate to backstab the americans. Time will tell...
Bonam
I'm sure this particular move has some short term benefit for Russia and isn't motivated by some magnanimous attitutde towards the West. That being said, Russia would benefit greatly from closer ties with the West. It will soon be the only major primarily Caucasian nation that is not part of western alliances. It is growing increasingly isolated, as its former satellites fall under the influence of either NATO, the US, and the EU, or under the influence of China or of Islam. If Russia's leaders had any real long term foresight they'd be trying to join the EU and NATO instead of antagonizing Western nations. I believe at some point not to long ago Russia was considering joining NATO! how ironic would that be? Russia joins the organization that was created by western nations as a defense against the Russians .......lol, but in this rapidly changing world Russia and the U.S. would be better off as allies than enemies. Indeed, would be quite ironic. But not unprecedented, and certainly beneficial for Russia. Perhaps some day, when Russia is ready. Although Russian history is one of one mistake after another, one missed opportunity after another, one brutality after another. It's fallen so far from where it could have been today. Quite sad really.
