The federal government will dole out $4 billion for infrastructure projects based on a one-page application form that solicits only the most basic information.

The form's simplicity is part of the Harper government's bid to streamline the application process and get money flowing quickly to construction projects that are intended to create jobs and kickstart Canada's sluggish economy.

But critics fear the government has gone overboard and will wind up throwing money at projects about which it knows next to nothing.

Streamlining sounds a whole lot like a lack of accountability.

The money should have gone to the municipalities.

It is what it is. This is one to be judged in retrospect.

They may perform with integrity... or they may rob us blind...

I hope those of us with pencils to mark X's can remember some ot this past next Tuesday, and practice a bit more than our usual 'due diligence' when the time comes to assess it.

Perhaps your city council can be trusted but here in Toronto, it's known as the Silly Council. Giving money to municipalities like Toronto - who notoriously lean left - just gives them a blank check to keep spending. Toronto still hasn't made the necessary decisions to reap the benefits of amalgamation - decisions that should have been made 10 years ago.....and they continue to be in bed with the unions. I wouldn't trust David Miller with $10 - let alone billions. Dumb, dumb, dumb idea. Let's give the process a chance. As long as the public knows which projects are being approved, there will be a level of oversight and if the monies are abused, the Conservatives with pay the price - our Liberal friendly media will make sure of that.

The money isn't a blank check. It is for infrastructure. That means roads, bridges, sewer/water and transit.

By all accounts, the money does get used for infrastructure and is accounted for. The Auditor has cleared it since 2005. You have evidence to show that Toronto spends it on something other than infrastructure. I know around here, it is used for roads.

Sabre Rider... my opinion of this pack of hyperpartisan goofs is no secret.

I'd bet on as much of the latter as they think they can get away with-- and they're brazen. (But I'd bet that way, regardless of the application procedure.)

Why does everything have to be a 'right' or 'left' issue? The money should go where it's needed the most and municipalities would know that better than the federal gov't.

Who decides where it's needed the most? Various groups and people have different ideas and to some extent we very much CAN label them left or right.
