Today, the globe reported that Canadian researchers were easily able to turn skin cells into iPS cell lines, which could then give rise to cell types that could be used in treating many diseases, including cancer. This research has made it much safer to create pluripotent stem cells without having to go the embryonic route (which is controversial in some areas) and it also prevents the risk of cancer from using these techniques.

So, what do you think about the current governments inability to recognize this chance for Canada to stand along with the U.S., Japan, and Europe? What do you think about the ideological challenges that prevents our P.M. in taking this chance to finally defeat diseases, like Alzheimer's, Parkinsons, and Lou Gherig's Disease?

Taking stem cells from human beings that are alive and in the womb and killing them in the hope of curing an existing full termed human being smacks of cannibalism...as we know embro harvested stem cells cause tumors almost always - nature is trying to tell us something - we as a species eating our selves to live is simply not meant to be. Researchers have found that privately owned stem cells (your own) have great potential...but for some strange reason - the pro-choice crowd is determined to ulitize the tissues of the unborn - It's gross.

Yep...it is the final and ironic subjugation of the unborn class even in death. Not good enough to live, but swell as replacement parts and therapies.

Please pass the ketchup!

It shows there hate for humaity that even knowing that harvested stem cells from strange humans in all stages simply does not work - but they move forward with a vengence - Finally the human hating no choice pro-choice crowd are showing their true colours....when they desperately look for one more justification for barbaric thinking......" Look - Look - abortion grants life!" Kind of hypocritical - I have known this for years that they never toss out the unborn - they put the damned thing into a juicer....It's worth a few bucks for just the chemicals held within the body. But ----- I bet you a million bucks that those that love the idea of capital punishment for the poor are all prochoice. I'm not a womans rights hater - there simply has to be a better way ....now do you have any jerk sauce handy? I say a nice charcoal fire and a glass of - nice white would be good....

I am talking about taking adult cells and turning them to another type of adult cell (like brain cells). This type of research has nothing to do with embryonic stem cells and don't make it look that way--please. You take a debate about one type of research and talk about another. Answer the questions at hand.

However, I'll take one your argument anyways. Firstly, embryo harvested stem cells do not always cause tumors. Get your facts straight...please. This is a basic scientific fact so if you don't understand health and science, don't use it to argue against another. A significant amount of research is being put into killing (0%) the risk of tumor development whether or not it is an embryonic stem cell. See-epigenetic research.

Also, are you telling me that nature is telling us something? Are you telling me that what is natural is right? Just look at it, if we did what is "Natural" we'd be raping each other in order to reproduce, killing each other for food and our mates, etc. Lastly, the pro-choice crowd is not pushing for only embryonic stem cells. Get you head out of where it doesn't belong. They are pushing for research and that is what we have so far. Now that adult cells can be turned into iPS cells, there is not much more need for embryonic research. Don't make it out to look like these people are carrying around knives and spoons wanting to take everyone's embryos while they sleep.

Storing your own blood is ethical - It's yours to use in an emergancy...Your own stem cells are the same - they are yours - the point I was making is that you should not take what is not yours just because someone is so dupified to toss out a piece of their body (abort) - It's simply not yours to take even if it is considered carbage by the tosser.

So are you saying that we shouldn't use adult cells to use in research? That's very backwards of you. Remember, get your terminology and ideas correct. I am not talking about adult stem cells. I am talking about mature cells (like skin cells). Last, these iPS lines for disease will be individual. So if you have alzheimer's, you'll have your own line created over months to fix it--not from someone else.

The Truth About Stem Cell Research

A priest no less, outlined 10 great media myths in the debate over stem-cell research.

Myth 1—Stem cells come only from embryos

Father Pacholczyk said people must understand what stem cells are—cells that are differentiated based on what human tissue they are taken from. The body has 220 different stem-cell types that can be extracted from nearly every part of the body, including eyes, spinal cord, blood, brain, skin, and muscle. In most cases, stem cells can be extracted without harming the individual.

The goal of stem-cell research in general is to generate new cells in the laboratory that can be put back into a person’s body and hopefully take over for dying tissue or cells affected by the disease. Bone-marrow transplants, for example, utilize stem cells.

Father Pacholczyk said the church supports stem-cell research in most cases. “There are ethical concerns depending on the source of the stem cells,” he explained. The church has no problems with stem cell research when the stem cells are taken from adults, umbilical cords, or miscarriages. Stem cells from miscarriages are known as embryonic germ cells.

This research is necessary and it would be sinful not to use God given talents to save lives.

then roll up our sleeves and turn them into realities." - Michael Ignatieff

You can now keep your baby's umbilical cord to preserve should your child get sick later. These can also be used for other family members. Other embryonic cells come from miscarriages.

Organ transplants often come from a dead person's parts, especially hearts.

Humans have pigs' hearts.

This is all recognized medical science. Stem cells are an amazing breakthrough and when it comes down to losing your child, your life, or facing an incurable disease, you'll consider all options.

If the attitude and spirit of society was correct and as it should naturally be - illness would be rare. We have a sick society mentally and spiritually - that sickness will never be cured by the injestion of others in any form. This is not the solution - to harvest any part of any human to allow others to live - If you have a bad heart due to poor genetics - then natural law dictates that it's time for you to die...To wait like a miserable little vampire for some poor person to die of a severe head injury -- so you could have the others heart...just don't fly with me....Much like the pitiful extension of life through dialysis...it is temporary ...and not a cure...besides - my mother in law is still reaping havoc and destruction and hate ...but the system keeps the hag alive ---- I could have sworn they gave her the best treatment when they discovered she was nasty...where as my mother - was a good and just woman - and she did not recieve the best... Life extention is a spiritual matter..not a medical one.

Does that mean we can get our foreskins back? Or did these guys already fry 'em up for "research"?

Interferon was made from foreskins...remember the great cancer cure of 25 years ago - they put all those in the "blender" and THAT turned out to be a failure also. And no my friend - I will not reveal if I have mine or not...Jeeeez you really like to set me up for a laugh ----well I am not laughing today...oooh --- last night at the club - a great band of super smart young girls - drummer - superb - bass and guitar players great? _ and for having a big lesbian following they sure liked this old guy. Maybe I should just let the white beard grow and get a cowboy hat and shades --- they could call me pops...and I could give lessons......boy am I a lonely old fool...actually - you would have loved the band.

1. Interferons were hardly failures. The problem, as usual, is hype by journalists making idiotic and unsubstantiated proclamations about how they would cure cancer (which is about as idiotic as saying something would cure viral infections, as if a whole class of diseases could somehow by destroyed by a single chemical). If all you get your information from is press releases and science "journalists", then you might say things like that.

2. You're an ignorant lunatic.

This research is a good thing, it could be the start of a new industry that could do very well for our economy. Anyone against this needs to get with the times.

Ignorant lunitic...hummm? That would be a crazy person who intentionally ignores reality? If they were a true lunitic they could not make the conscious choice to choose to ignore and be ignorant....I would say lunitic..would fit a person that was crazed - and ignorance is generated by pride...had a wife like that once - or what it twice?

You're ignorant because you made a statement about interferons based (from what I can tell) exclusively on media hype, and not an actual science.

You're a lunatic because your posts suggest some profound mental issues.

As Gandi stated "For a man to gain his self worth and esteem though the intentional belittlement of others is not much of a man" - to para phrase - as for the mentalist postings you so much resent - buddy - I am a musican and an artist - my job is to be a lunitic and to go beyound the bounds - I entertain myself - you take yourself seriously - that would make you the delllusional instutionalized fool..I know myself - apprently you have never taken the time or had the courage for introspection...nothing personal - but don't get that personal with me again - I am not some average old man.. when I play - the people are delighted - how do you delight or enlight the mass...huh? no talent perhaps?

This is why your likely insane. You're long meaningless rants that have nothing to do with the topic at hand. I don't care in the least what you do for fun or profit. It's irrelevant. What's relevant is that the posts you make here reveal you to be a pretty silly, potentially disturbed twit who makes a lot of grand proclamations based on ignorance.

Tell me, does being an artist mean you're allowed to say patently false things? Interferons are useful, my crazy friend, it's just that a lot of moronic journalists (the usual cadre of idiots who make up science journalism) made utterly fantastical claims. You're essentially saying the researchers who worked with these substances somehow were pulling the wool over peoples' eyes, and that is false. Worse even than that, you seem to be maligning researchers in general, using your own false knowledge of one area of research as some sort of universal example.
