According to a police report posted by The Smoking Gun Web site, a 14-year-old girl in Wauwatosa, Wis., a prosperous Milwaukee suburb, was charged with disorderly conduct on Feb. 11 for repeatedly text-messaging during class.

There are better ways to go about this. Arresting a kid for text messaging in class is no reason for this person to now have a criminal/juvenile offender record.

I recall this was what detention was for. That is not enough anymore?? What the hell is going on in schools these days?? Are the parents involved enough ??

After a female officer was called to the scene, a body search revealed that the defiant teen had stuffed her handset — said to be a Samsung Cricket — down the back of her pants.

Great strip searching kids for a cell phone that was used for text messaging in class.... it's like the kid brought a gun and threatened people with it ..... you kick the kid out of class, to the principals office where the parents are called to deal with the issue.

I fear my dad more than any cop out there. The threat of calling my dad when I got in trouble in school was more than an effective deterrent so that I would not do the bad thing again in the future.

Parents are mostly divorced thanks to our wonderful campaign of training one sex to detest the other. They are also overwhelmed by financial stress due to the liberation of woman who ended up enslaved like the men - clever! There is a pet project in some American school where law enforcement is equipped with kinder softer handcuffs for children that are made from Velcro...and there are advocates of tazering unruley children with a lower kinder voltage...The state wanted to create a new and better breed of human though secularization - getting rid of that be good God stuff....looks like the experiment failed.

I doubt texting in class could get you a criminal record. I don't think school rules come under the criminal code but schools should be able to get the police to eject any student they cannot otherwise control. Disorderly conduct would be a misdemeanor if anything.

It should be obvious to anyone reading the FOX article (all FOX articles are suspect IMO but we will take it as being accurate) that this was not an isolated event. It is pretty clear from the actions of this kid that she has some problems. For one thing she outright lied to the police about whether she had a phone as well as her own phone number. It's pretty clear she doesn't have much respect for authority. Who knows if the cops should have been called, we don't know the whole history that lead up to this. Perhaps it was just the last straw for some teacher who was getting no support in dealing with a student they couldn't control, who was continually disrupting a class. Cell phones shouldn't be allowed in classrooms anyway. At the very least they should have to be turned off in classrooms. If a parent needs to contact a child in class, they can phone the school.

I agree, I should take this with some salt.

Indeed, if I was a teacher, cell phones would be checked at the door, or locker. I did not need one when I was a kid, and there are really no reasons why a kid needs a cell phone. And if the kid was a problem before, why were not the parents involed before?? If I was the principal, I'd call the parents and tell them to come get their kid. I would not need cops.

Kids need to at least have some respect and fear of authority. This does not seem to have respect. The criminal record will do the kid no good only harm. Let the parents deal with the idiot kids.. cops have bigger and more important fish to catch. I wonder how much money is spent on policing schools.

At least you drew the difference between authority (authorship) and fear. Parents used to have authorship over their childrens lives - they planned for their children - they used their wisdom and experence to do what was best for THEIR children - now the kids have figured out that all they have to do is call "kids help line" and they can over power their measily parents...Look at what the UN has in store for us in the future - that they have power over children internationally - and we are but bio sperm egg makers. What do you expect when our judicary are enthrawled with the workings of international law and attempt to put into force what some dweeb Trotskites at the UN come up with while praying to a rock in the basement in New York....

I find it hard to believe that a school would not try to involve the parents before taking such an action. Perhaps they had tried to involve the parents in the past but got no results or reaction. Perhaps the parents let the kid get away with that crap at home. Like I said, we don't know the whole history of what lead up to this particular incident.

Why do you find that hard to believe? You are out of touch and living in a bygone era - things have changed-- this is but the tip of the iceburg. It is wishful and normal benevolent thinking to assume that "Perhaps they have tried to involve the parents" - they conspire and have the full support of the system...why bother calling parents - some teachers are programmed to believe they know best and this attitude is re-inforced by the government and courts. My sister in law is a real systems lady - if she does not like the attitude of student she who is not a medical professional will indirectly perscribe medication for the kid....a powerful stimulant that has the effect of burning the brat out and making him or her seem ruley and compliant - but damaged.

I doubt a doctor would prescribe medication for a child at the request of a school without informing the parents. I think that would likely get a doctor's ass sued off in the litigious United States and rightfully so. Perhaps the parents said, we can't control her either, call the cops. Who knows.

Of course they inform the parents...a little delegation will sit down with the parent..usually one - because most are divorced...Then that delegation will size up that parent - If the parent is stupid - thus compliant - then in come the pills - If the parent is resistant to the will of the school "authorities" - then in come the child protection people who by policy love to dope up the kids. You forget, not everybody is aware as you and I - and the average person actually never questions the system...prime example - LOOK at those who enlist in the military..It would never cross their sweet naive little minds that perhaps those they worship and respect who are in power are a bit bonkers and very controling in a negative way!
