Luxury travel contradicts Tories' frugal image

Not sure which one concerns me more... Bernier or Fortier.

They really stand for a smaller, much more expensive government perhaps? What gives.

Oh, and let me preempt you, "oh, but the Liberals" & "That damn Red Star"

If he cut spending to social programs people would be whining about that. The left would never say anything nice about Harper regardless of what he does so this topic is a waste of time.

If you took the time to read the article you would notice that it covers a 4 year period. Perhaps you need to listen to this leftist group below before you blow off the Harper Conservatives Waste of Taxpayers money.

By contrast, travel surveys show businesses are reducing costs by choosing more economical flights. At least one other government, Alberta, has shown more care with taxpayer dollars . For example, the Alberta environment minister and an aide spent $3,200 each to fly to Bali for a United Nations conference on climate change last year. The former federal environment minister, John Baird, took a $10,920 flight to the same conference. Three political aides and two bureaucrats joined him at similar rates. Total airfare was $61,000.

The CPC spent 10 times more then the Alberta PC. And you wonder how they broke the bank before even hitting a recession. That is worse then current Liberal Bob Rae, and heading in the direction of Grant Devine.

Both Liberals and Conservatives have been big spenders but the Star's analysis found most Conservative ministers spent slightly more than the Liberals they once accused of being lavish spenders.

Hypocrites

Our government is always concerned about how hard-earned tax dollars are being spent. We are continually improving the way we manage taxpayer money, to ensure the best value for money," he said.

Well thats good to know.

if you look at the Stockwell example, $5800 expensed for flights from Vancouver to Calgary to Edmonton, ridiculous. I just planned a trip on Air Canada for the same trip, YYV to YYC - $715 (Exec) and YYC to YEG $625 (Exec, only one) and then YEG to YYV $750... total of $2090 (and I think the Edm to Cal was booked return by accident, not one way. Where was the other $3700???

I'm at least heartened that the usual booster club isn't in here defending them.

Maybe some real fiscal conservatives would be interested in seeing these numbers.

People in glass houses shouldn't be casting rocks. Care to tell us the Liberal Senators little adventure to Dubai???

All parties spend stupidly on this flight nonsense. Saying this is a tory only problem is nonsense.

Shakey, from what I can gather, they didn't fly by government/private jet. They flew commercial.

This is a tremendous change from previous (Liberal) governments. Have you seen reports on Michaelle Jean's use of DND Challengers? I think she used several to fly to Bermuda for holidays at about $40,000 a pop. (She used the RCMP to justify this because of "security".)

Conservative ministers seem to fly first class commercial and their staff flies business/economy at full fare so that they can cancel or change tickets at the last minute.

One can possibly criticize them for taking slightly larger retinues but I doubt any Conservative minister takes more aides/hangers on than a typical Liberal did.

Stephen Harper is like John Crosbie: cheap. IMV, Harper seriously missed a beat in the last federal election because he didn't play on this fact in his campaign in Quebec. Anyway.

Where the Tories have spent a fortune is on military crap. We bought four huge airplanes at several billion each and God-knows-how-many tanks, drones, HVs, RVs or whatever they're called. Harper is proof that the only difference between boys and men is the price of their toys.

If the Toronto Star were honest, it would have said that the Harper is profligate on military stuff. If Harper were honest, he would have cut spending elsewhere to pay for all the military crap.

With Harper, he's buying more guns - and he's still buying the Liberal butter. Harper may be cheap but he seems to spend alot.

Very funny. Bob Rae raised the Ont. deficit to 9 Bilion dollars in its first budget and was 40 Billion in debt by the end of term. Bob Rae created the doctor shortage in the country that we see today.

Yes, we notice how the right-wingers frantically make excuses (and make up facts) to defend what they would attack others of doing.

Can you please point out where anyone is making up "facts" as you say. This isn't rabble we actually base our conversation in reality here at MLW.

We had noted many times before that the opinions of this discussion forum isn't reflected by the general population.

Many of your realities aren't supported by historical facts.

You obviously cannot confirm anything you've said. Thank you for coming clean daniel and admitted that you made it all up and saying that your comments were based in fantasy.

You've not been in this forum long enough to gauge the predominant sentiments this forum - or maybe you have and decided you're at home with the radical fringe.

Again thanks for not backing up your statements made earlier and now cementing them in place for all to see. Now that you cannot prove your previous allegations you've moved onto personally attacking me. Well done daniel. 691 posts in about 1900 days? Sorry if I don't see you as someone who frequents this forum sir/madam.

Sure ...right here....

Bob Rae raised the Ont. deficit to 9 Bilion dollars in its first budget and was 40 Billion in debt by the end of term.

I looked for a cite, but that poster didnt have one. Pretty much means it was made up.

August and RB...

Actually the Star article states that the CPC outspent the LPC... "Both Liberals and Conservatives have been big spenders but the Star's analysis found most Conservative ministers spent slightly more than the Liberals they once accused of being lavish spenders."

It's all right here gathered from various sources.

I thought it was common knowledge as it's ancient history. I lived through the Rae Days, I guess not everyone here has. I have to remember that many young kids post here on MLW and may not have the knowledge that I do. There's the link at any rate.

BoB Rae had a 6% approval rating when he left office....he was the worst Premier in Ontario and maybe Canadian history.

I was a student at UoT when Rae was premier, I remember the situation well, and I have no issue supporting Rae at this point. Most I know feel the same way.

I truely hope he is elected leader he will be thrashed badly. The negative ads against Dion were nothing compared to what the CPC could do with BoB Rae. It would be a dream come true for PM Harper.

BoB Rae is unelectable as a PM, he has zero credibility. He totally destroyed the Ontario economy and created the doctor shortage that we are now enjoying by paying U oF T 10 million dollars to graduate 30% less doctors. He was warned about this but did it anyways.

I'm surprised we haven't seen the other CPC backers in here singing the praises of these dollars being spent. Could it be that they too see it as indefensible? Leafless? Wulfie? Whitewhatever?

You don't like the spending now the Liberals spend much more and raise taxes but you have to have a job and a house to care about higher taxes.

So you would rather have the Green Shift plan which would cost over $40 Billion.

By that logic then, Jack Layton should have been running his election campaign from a train, and done all of his advertising through posters, and then refunded all the tax dollars used to fund his campaign. All parties are not doing well financially.
