Obama and the recent past

Recommended Posts

You mean in the same way that Germany was more important than Japan? I'm betting a lot of dead airman, soldiers, sailors, and marines from the Pacific theatre would disagree. Iraq was subjected to military attack long before Afghanistan. Just because NATO is in Afghanistan doesn't necessarily make it the number one priority, even if Canada may think so.

Yes true, but now your new president says, "we are fighting the wrong war" in Iraq. Maybe with Obama Canada will finally get the help it needs. Otherwise there's a growing sense we got suckered into accepting this mission as a way to appease George Bush.

What military attacks? You mean from Big Bush? When we left, because it wasn't a priority?

Germany and Japan didn't happen 2 years apart. The two situations are too different for that comparison.

No...Desert Storm was certainly an important measure of US policy for Iraq (we never "left"), but Iraq was also subjected to attacks subsequently based on enforcement of no-fly zones, sanctions, and material breach of 1991 surrender instruments / UN inspections (e.g. Operation Desert Fox - Blair and Clinton bombed Iraq at over 100 locations in December, 1998).

Not in this case, where the example was to demonstrate Canada's major commitment in Europe, but very minor role in the Pacific during WW2. America was actually attacked by Japan, not Germany.
