jbg Posted October 25, 2008 Report Posted October 25, 2008 Apparently, fascination with the Internet has descended to new lows. This news story, excerpted below (link) details how an online "marriage" went seriously awry, leading to a real world arrest for "murder" of an avatar. This is extreme. There are other forums where seemingly normal people spend their days scouring google to find evidence that another screen name posted similar content elsewhere on the net, even on sites aimed at other countries. People need to get outside more, enjoy their families, enjoy life. Online hatreds and rivalries can be directed to more constructive activity. Online divorcee jailed after killing virtual hubby By MARI YAMAGUCHI – 1 day ago TOKYO (AP) — A 43-year-old Japanese woman whose sudden divorce in a virtual game world made her so angry that she killed her online husband's digital persona has been arrested on suspicion of hacking, police said Thursday. The woman, who is jailed on suspicion of illegally accessing a computer and manipulating electronic data, used his identification and password to log onto popular interactive game "Maple Story" to carry out the virtual murder in mid-May, a police official in northern Sapporo said on condition of anonymity, citing department policy. "I was suddenly divorced, without a word of warning. That made me so angry," the official quoted her as telling investigators and admitting the allegations. ****************** The woman used login information she got from the 33-year-old office worker when their characters were happily married, and killed the character. The man complained to police when he discovered that his beloved online avatar was dead. ************* Quote Free speech: "You can say what you want, but I don't have to lend you my megaphone." Will the steps anyone is proposing to fight "climate change" reduce a single temperature, by a single degree, at a single location? The mantra of "world opinion" or the views of the "international community" betrays flabby and weak reasoning (link).

Then there are the seemingly not so normal people who spend their days spreading their hate agenda by c&p-ing their posts all over the internet; people who go and on because they were caught breaking the rules. Those people need to get outside more, enjoy their families, enjoy life. Their hatred should be directed towards constructive activities rather than adding more ignorance, misinformation, and hate to an already troubled world. Quote

guyser Posted October 27, 2008 Report Posted October 27, 2008 your title is misleading. It could have been "Online divorcee jailed after....." -eating a PB and J -taking a shower -watching House -putting her socks on -posting dumb ass things on the internet trying to be cute. Quote
jbg Posted October 28, 2008 Author Report Posted October 28, 2008 your title is misleading. I tracked the article title, which is technically how you're supposed to post a significant excerpt of a news article. I'll freely admit that I don't always follow that informal convention. That's why I don't like those article "formatting" rules imposed by many forums, including www.rightnation.us (where I am a nominal left-wing Democratic poster).
