Just like the Liberals turned their back on the Afghanistan war which was their creation, howling and complaining about the Conservatives and accepting no blame, so too they have been howling about the food inspection system which - was developed under their government, known about by them, and approved by them.

The architecture of the recently revamped food inspection system - an issue that has dogged the Conservatives during the federal election - was crafted when the Liberals were in power in 2005, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has confirmed.

The design of pilot tests for the Compliance Verification System (CVS), rolled out at federally regulated meat plants in April, began in August 2005, said Brian Evans, the agency's executive vice-president.

At the time, the agency was operating under the direction of former Liberal agriculture minister Andy Mitchell, who lost in the 2006 election. Ujjal Dosanjh, currently seeking re-election in Vancouver, was in charge of food-safety policy as minister of health; he now serves as health critic for the Liberals

Liberals crafted heavily criticized food inspection system

How many times have we heard Dosanjh on this issue, whining and accusing the Tories and their conservative philosophy of being responsible for the deaths of Canadians. Yet he was the man in charge of food safety policy when this new system was brought out! And what did he say then? That he disapproved? Clearly not! My God these Liberals are weasels!

Forget about the AFGHANISTAN WAR because the Conservative were for the war and the Iraq war. Now as far as the Maple Leaf meat problems, when the Libs did this let remember they didn't have time to fine tune the programs because of an election. Now when a new government comes in its up to that minister to go back and review what has been done and what needs to be done further. Its always a copout to blame the former government when YOU are in charge!

Bullshit. The Liberals have been portraying this entire program as a product of a conservative philosophy which puts money before health. Yet the whole program was designed under their regime and given the go-ahead by them. Funny they didn't mention that, eh?

The failure to properly notify the public and avoid most if not all of the deaths in this outbreak are the result of a change that happened in April of this year, because of the Conservative government, while the Conservative government was in power. That's all there is to it.

Where's the transparent and accountable Conservative government that we were promised? They caused a problem and should be admitting guilt. Instead, we find them avoiding, denying and making sick jokes; and their starry-eyed supporters making lame excuses and passing the blame.

Uhm, okay. They thought up the program themselves and put it in place the day after they were elected.

Whatever floats your boat, chum. We don't want reality interupting this wonderful world of certainty you're living in.

That changes everything the shortages of inspectors and the cruel jokes are all the liberals fault. The Tories followed through on a pilot project started by the Liberals. It has too be the Liberals fault for not getting reelected so they could have made sure the new system was working.

I guess being in Opposition most of the time makes the Cons forget that it's usually the sitting government that takes the fall for the mistakes of past governments; the Canadian public usually doesn't discriminate by party in these sorts of situations, rather simply views it as the fault of "the government". Well, won't be long now until the Cons are back at doing what they do best: hypocritically bleeting from side of the Opposition....

LOL. The Cons adopted a Liberal initiative and got burned as a result? Clearly if there was something wrong with it, then why didn't they do something about it instead of just going through with it? So really it is their fault: they still failed to protect the public....

First of all, we don't even know that the new system is at fault. It might have happened under the old system. Hell, they've had that plant under tight government control and inspection for months while they cleaned it and there was still Listeriosis in the meat its producing.

Second, the whole theme of the attacks on the Tories was that this was something they came up with in line with their ideological anti-government philosophies and it turns out the whole idea had nothing to do with them. They merely inherited it.

But I understand that complexity isn't something you welcome. Simple answers are so much better.

You are the one trying to transfer the blame too the Liberals. I do not think there is a simple answer. I do think the jokes made were inexcusable for a minister to make and should have resulted in his resignation.

I posted this on a related thread. It's from a Liberal press release on their website:

QUOTE

“Today we learn that as a result of the Harper government’s ideological preference for deregulation, the country’s listeriosis crisis was far worse than it had to be,” said Mr. Easter.

“Increasingly the Conservatives’ campaign of misinformation about their changes to our food safety system is being exposed. They undermined Canada’s food safety system and the results were devastating. It’s time for Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Mr. Ritz to come clean and admit to their actions.”

Since he had direct knowledge, could Wayne Easter be more irresponsible or dishonest?

No I'm not. I'm trying to point out their dishonesty and hypocrisy.

I do think the jokes made were inexcusable for a minister to make and should have resulted in his resignation.

Of course! Because he was a tory. That's more than reason enough.

Ujjal Dosanjh was in charge of food safety policy. I think he should resign as candidate for his hypocrisy and dishonesty. Mind you, hypocrisy and dishonesty are par for the course for Dosanjh.

Are we talking about the same thing? Are you saying that Easter is behind the decision to allow companies too not report findings.

Liberal agriculture critic Wayne Easter served as parliamentary secretary to the minister of agriculture when the CVS was developed. Yesterday, he said he was not involved in the development of the pilots to test the feasibility of the CVS, but he was aware of the initiative.

The change were made by Harper in May 2007 and implemented only in March 2008.

Even if it was planned by someone else; it never was implemented by them.
