what happens to parties in the event of a tory majority

Um, I think the OP completely misses the boat.....and then some.

First off, it is clear by polling that the Liberals are the ones who are suffering in this-- NOT the NDP. The NDP could very well be replacing the Liberals as the main party on the left as we speak. So no, the NDP would not become irrelevant. The Libs very well could, though.

Second...this country does not want a Conservative majority....period. That's why they are polling under 40%. We could debate this until the cows come home, but that doesn't change the fact that Canadians are very concerned about the Cons receiving a majority. The only province that would like that, really....is Alberta...because their native son is the leader and because they are what I would like to call "special." Canada does not want the out-of-control growth and spiraling of prices that have occurred in Alberta to happen across the country.

So to answer your question: The cons will not receive majority, and if by some magical rainbows and unicorns it happened, then the Libs would suffer, not the NDP.

I'm curious as to what will happen to the ndp if the tories get a majority. They will essentially be back to where they were in 93, powerless. How is the NDP going to stop harper if harper has a majority. I think the ndp has been somewhat relevant due to the nature of a minority parliament where they had some power. If it's a majority gov't, where is their power? where is their relevence?

Your right. Whats the point of an opposition if there is a majority government? We may as well pack it in and have a one party system. It would be soooo much more representative.

The telephone Polls?

Post a link to your `polls' and I'll tell you what I think. Otherwise, it's a manipulative, political tactic that most salesmen wouldn't even use. <_<

Read the political polls 2008 and that'll tell you.

The country definetely doesn't want an NDP gov't, that's why they're polling at 21%. I would think most Canadians would want the lifestyle and standard of living the Albertans have.

The NDP's claim to fame was the amount of power it had in minority gov'ts, it gained relevance and votes, what happens if the tories get a majority, the NDP is irrelevant again. I think the Libs would benefit from a tory majority, clean house, and run a better campaign next time around.

I'm not so sure, after all they did elect Stephane Dion. For some reason I have a feeling if Justin Trudeau wins his seat they'll do everything they can to get Trudeau Jr. the party leadership.

No their are still obvious policy differences, whether it be on crime, trade, the military, or taxes.

I think my sarcasm went right over your head and it's never fun when it has to be explained.

Ok, the poster to whom I was responding is the one who claims the CPC is centre now. I, like you, agree that they are still about crime, trade, military, taxes... you know, the usual "conservative" platforms.

Therefore, I joked, saying if they (the CPC) are centre as the poster seemed to be claiming (the point which I was disputing), how come their supporters hated the LPC (who were also centre - was being the key word there, no need to go over that again hopefully)... and they love the CPC?

Do you get it now, or should I try explaining it a different way?

If Dion goes under the bus, then so too must trudeau, there is a fiscal conservative wing of that party that would cringe if trudeau was the leader.

"By cutting funding to arts, culture, womans programs, doing nothing about poverty or the environment, and at the same time giving tax breaks to coroprations and making life easy for the eletes? Buddy, there's a reason why 60 to 65% of Canadians DON'T support the Cons and vote for left-of-center parties instead. "

Arts funding has not been cut, only one programme was cut, I'm not happy having my money spent to send some actor to Cannes. They cut one womans programme, I'm heart broken. Keeping people employed and lowering their taxes is the best thing you can do about poverty. And they do indeed have an environmental policy, it just does't involve slitting our own throats. Dion is promising tax breaks too, but Jack should be careful trotting out his 30 year old party mantra, since many of the most profitable companies in Canada are owned by union pension funds. Why doesn't anyone remind the unionistas that the first thing the teachers pension fund did when it bought BCE is lay off hundreds of employees, good jobs, middle class jobs of people who have kitchen tables.

People in Canada have been indoctrinated by the school system, the media and most of all by Liberal Government propaganda to beleive that socialism is a workable option. In univeristy most liberal arts profs. actually believe the Marxism was about economics. Dion, who is a Phd in sociology (university bird course) wherein Marx, Engals et al are taken seriously. The crux of sociology is that capitalism is unfair and that the only thing that can save humanity is socialism. Facts present little obstruction to these ridiculous teachings.

Difference being said poster probably hated the Liberals for their policies. Either way I'm not going to get into semantics.

I think the fiscally conservative wing is gonna be MIA for abit. The fact is without Paul Martin, John Manley, Roy Maclaren, etc. the LPC might be relegated to a rump of left wing welfare liberals. That is unless Michael Ignatieff were to take the reins of the leadership. However even then, I think if Dion were to lose the election it would be an even greater battle trying to get him to step down.
