The Left Wing Media

Despite their lead in every poll in the election, the right wings complains and rails against the coverage they get at every turn.

It is just another example of the future culture wars we can expect to see in Canada as the Conservatives try to rally their supporters to believe they are treated unfairly. The fact that the Tories were endorsed by nearly every major newspaper in the last election and have received fairly favourable reporting (according to independent studies from the last election), they continue to cry "it's not fair!"

Moreover, we hear false claims that the National Post hasn't endorsed Harper every election, that the National Post is run by a Liberal party member, that the CBC has no right of center commentators, etc, etc.

I don't that we have seen such a media obsessed political movement in our history.

The simple truth is that the media has always looked for blood because that is what sells.

The Tories have won this election but you can see they are shaping up future battles with the media to try and tame them. I think that is wishful thinking. If they want a tame media, they should buy it like Rupert Murdoch and make it opinion based entertainment. At least that will guarantee the coverage they want on at least one channel or newspaper group.

If the right wants to form a circular group and shower their leader with their love, by all means do it. However, don't expect all the media to join the process. You have to expect that someone in the media is going to identify the activity the party is engaged in because that is what reporters generally do. The bias has always been to sell newspapers or get viewers.

There is no Liberal biased media here or south of the border. The radio on the other hand, is largely right wing within the private sector, but from what I see of the TV and print media, they try to be unbiased and fair, and they go after whatever makes the best story.

Certainly there is a lot of right wing commentators on AM radio. Some say they saved AM radio from oblivion. The vast majority of radio, both satellite and over the air is music though.

Radio operators realized that conservatives listen to AM radio talk shows more than liberals do. It is good marketing. Liberals like to hear their politics in song.

Sorry, yes, I was talking about AM talk radio.

That's a fact

I agree it's all about the story and how many sales it will garner the media outlets.

With the coverage regarding the Conservatives gaffes and missteps it seems more about the apologies than about the events which led up to the apologies. For example, a headline which says "another Conservative apology" or "two Conservative apologies in two days", etc. There is something alluring to the public with the fact that the party in power is forced to "apologize" for whatever reason. It feels good to knock the Conservatives down a notch lest they get complacent in the power they enjoy or think they are a notch above the rest of us.

If the apologies were taken out of the picture, current media stories could be lacking in sensationalism.

A perfect example is the business with the staffer in Cannon's office who advised the rep of a Native group to behave and come to future meetings sober. For the most part, the media failed to dig for all the facts or decided to ignore the facts which led up to the incident before pumping up the "apology" in its reporting. Native groups have jumped on the bandwagon intensify media coverage and as a result the Conservatives are painted as a party of bigots and racists.

This is an election campaign and going for the jugular is to be expected. The question I have is who is running for election, the media or the politicians?

The Liberals get knocked down every day. I don't hear nearly as much whining about it.
