Sir Paul McCartney will sing on the Plains of Abraham on July 20 as part of the celebrations surrounding Quebec City's 400th birthday.

This has got to be a joke.

But why English talent to attract the crowds in of all places, Quebec City?

McCartney, who played a recent open-air show in Kyiv, Ukraine, has never appeared in Quebec City.

Kyiv, Ukraine, Quebec City.

Looks like McCartney's career could be on the skids.

It makes as much sense as Charles Aznavour being awarded the Order of Canada.

link

The significance of the Order of Canada has been so diluted over the years, it no longer holds any meaning for me.

From your link seabee, this is why Aznavour is to be "honoured".

«pour sa contribution exceptionnelle à la culture francophone en tant que chanteur, compositeur et comédien et pour son oeuvre qui contribue à bâtir des liens culturels importants entre le Canada et le reste du monde»

Rough translation: "for his exceptional contribution to the francophone culture as a singer, composer and comedian and for his work which contributes to building important cultural links between Canada and the rest of the world".

Since when is a citizen of France an ambassador for Canadian culture???

It's enough to make you gag!

Or Morgentaler.

My beef with Morgentaler receiving the Order is that he started his abortion business by breaking Canadian law and he did so for many years. Therefore, he is a one-time criminal. IMO, that right there should disqualify him from receiving the Order of Canada. Morgentaler made abortion his business and as a result he became very rich. But I guess for some this is what passes for outstanding achievement in Canada.

He broke a law that did not stand...IMO that makes him a Canadian pioneer...and he broke the law eyes wide open, and spent time behind bars, IMO that makes him principled ....

....as far as his business goes.....as a doctor he did alright, but he made his money in investment real estate...maybe that should disqualify him?

He broke a law that did not stand...

Regardless, he broke an existing Criminal Code law. It's a fact that the criminal code section he was convicted under with regard to abortion was found to be in contravention of the 1982 Charter. Does the criminality of an action negate criminal convictions after such law is modified or rescinded. In other words, if I broke a law last week and it is rescinded this week, in law I don't think this expunges the criminality of what I did at the time?

So I guess then that fellows found guilty of freeing slaves in 1859 should still carry a black mark on the name in 1869?

Should Rosa parks not be honoured because she violated public transit ordinances?

Morgantaler not only broke the law, he openly broke the law and challenged the law. He faced the law and Canada won.

I'm pretty sure if that was the case you would have an argument for the record to be expunged.

MD, I'm not disputing the fact that through his actions Morgentaler advanced the right to choose for women and I think that is a good thing.

Simply, it's that I personally don't agree he should receive the Order of Canada. As I said, the Order of Canada has lost meaning for me over the years and this only reinforces how I feel about it.

I think that "through his actions...." would be a good criteria for the honour....

But similarly, given Rosa Parks arrest and conviction for violating Chapter 6, Section 11 segregation law of the Montgomery City code, that Ms Parks should not have been awarded the Congressional Gold Medal or the Presidential Medal of Freedom....

If this the central criterion you would use to award the Order of Canada I'm relieved you are not on the advisory panel. Are you?

As I said, I agree with the 1988 SCC decision regarding abortion. Yet I don't think Morgentaler, who is basically an activist, should receive the Order of Canada.

But similarly, given Rosa Parks arrest and conviction for violating Chapter 6, Section 11 segregation law of the Montgomery City code, that Ms Parks should not have been awarded the Congressional Gold Medal or the Presidential Medal of Freedom....

I'm very happy for Ms. Parks and, respect her courage and determination. I realize you're trying to introduce a moral equivalency but could we just once discuss a Canadian matter without bringing in the US experience?

Not only that but it is against the majority Catholic religion in Canada.

Whether you agree with abortion or not it is simply not in the best interest of Canadian society.

1) religion isn't an issue

2) no argument provided why morgantaler honour is not in the best interests of Canadian society...

Must... resist... urge... to... insult...

Get a grip, Leafless. Legalized abortion is obviously in the interest of women, who are a majority of citizens in Canada. Nyah.

I thought you would have welcomed the fact one of the 20th century top British entairtainer will bring British culture to Quebec City. Must be the fact he will not impose it that irks you.

McCartney will only be one more embassador of British culture to Québec. The first ones were many Scotts and some Irish as early as September 1759 who voluntarily helped the citizens of the devastaed city and of other surrouonding towns, The first marriages between Scotts (or Irish) militaries to Canadienne girls, with the blessing of their parents, took place in the following months or years. Accoring to genealogists, at least 10%, but more likely close to 20% of french-speaking Québécois are direct descendants of these people, who aften adapted their name to sound french, or occasionally take a completely new name. Today, one of the most prominent and rich family is the Simons family (pronounce à l'anglaise); they recently gave the population of the city, for the 400th anniversary, the magnificent "Fontaine de Tournay", which cost them hundred of thousands of dollars, and for which the entire population is gratefull. Most of the buildings in the upper town within the fortification is of british style, to replace the buildings that had been devasted during the siege of the city in 1759. Even before that, there has been some Scott and Irish (and Jewish and Italian) presence in the french colony of Canada. Nothing new. And McCartney was invited not because he is British, but because he was a Beattle.

What probably irks Leafless is that McCartney isn't English but Scottish - argh another minority and a lefty at that.

McCartney was born in Liverpool England and is an English rock singer.

What irks me is Quebec bringing in high profile English speaking talent to sing on the 'Plains of Abraham' when their talent should be exclusively French.

Why are they doing this?

Could it be to add insult to injury?

Or is it to hopefully to attract English speaking Canadians to come to Quebec City and then turn around claiming the 400th anniversary of Quebec City was a great success, drawing large crowds of English speaking Canadians.

Since tickets are free, who is paying for Paul McCartney? Is it Quebec or the federal government?

Hopefully it is not the federal government, as this is not a Canadian celebration.

Impossible to know although I thought you'd like to know that Heritage Canada gave $40 million for the celebrations.

... this is not a Canadian celebration.

Quebec City is truly one of the most entertaining fun filled cities in North America. Been there at least a dozen times, It's a city that knows how to party, how to have a good time....Can't think of a better city to have a birthday party.

Wish I could be there.

Who was insulted or injured, apart from you that is, and even at that your wounds wouldnt fill a band aid pad.

With or without Sir Paul the celebration will be a success. If there is one thing Quebecers know how to do - it's to throw a party. The Quebec Winter CArnival is a blast.

Who's paying Paul? The Que govt , with money that was given them by the feds no doubt.

Exactly the same as any other region in Canada.

It's a shame to you I know, but this is a Canadian celebration of the 400 yrs Quebec City has been here.

It'll be fun. But dont ruin it, stay home.

Why?

It is their party and they decide how they will do it. Outsiders have no business deciding anything whatsoever for them.

End of discussion.

Furthermore, if they were to have "exclusively french" entertainers, people in the RoC would take pleasure in describing Québécois as racists, xenophobic. Québec-bashers always find a way to spiin things.

Besides, MacCartney will attract tourists from the U.S. .You know, the country who waged one bloody revolution against Great Britain starting in 1776, and waged war against a british colony in 1812. So. should they boycott a british singer?
