White Doors Posted June 17, 2008 Report Posted June 17, 2008 I think this is a good thing. New Brunswick needs to radical changes to promote growth and reverse the trend of young, educated people going out west to make a living. http://telegraphjournal.canadaeast.com/front/article/316148 Quote Those Dern Rednecks done outfoxed the left wing again.~blueblood~

jbg Posted June 18, 2008 Report Posted June 18, 2008 a scam? care to elaborate?I read the article and it's "paid for" by a two-point jump in the HST. Does that tax make New Brunswickers sing in harmony? Quote Free speech: "You can say what you want, but I don't have to lend you my megaphone." Always remember that when you are in the right you can afford to keep your temper, and when you are in the wrong you cannot afford to lose it. - J.J. Reynolds. Will the steps anyone is proposing to fight "climate change" reduce a single temperature, by a single degree, at a single location? The mantra of "world opinion" or the views of the "international community" betrays flabby and weak reasoning (link).

Not particularly, however you need to understand that NB's PST was 15% up to 2 years ago. The Feds vacated 2% of that so politically, we would just be going back to where we were there. Basically it amounts to a transfer from fed responsibility to provincial. The 2% hike would not cover the drops in income taxes. Personally I would like taxes to be in the consumption side rather than the income side. at least the money makes it to the economy. I do think we need a lower rate than 15% though. But I am liking a 10% flat rate on income taxes! This is a radical departure in political thought in the maritimes and a way overdue so it makes me excited for the long term outlook of the economy here, which is nice for a change. August1991 Posted June 18, 2008 Report Posted June 18, 2008 Interesting. From link above: The government estimates there will be $500 million in tax savings with roughly $415 million in personal income tax savings and another $80 million in corporate tax cuts. The province would then collect $250 million from increasing the HST by two per cent and roughly $100 million from the carbon tax.Boudreau said balance of the remaining revenue will need to be made up through government belt tightening and a growing economy. "As a government we have to manage our spending in the future," he said. "So that plus stimulating the economy by doing those two things we can get out of this equation neutrally with a balanced budget." The tax structure is only part of the problem of government in Canada. We must reduce government spending and direct it better, and we must reduce government regulation. With that said, politicians will eventually figure out that environmental taxes generally come at a lower political price than taxes on income. Dion is on the right track except that previous Liberal governments have essentially destroyed his credibility. Quote
White Doors Posted June 19, 2008 Author Report Posted June 19, 2008 An end to the "atmosphere of hopelessness"? I think you mean the culture of defeat. regardless, there are alot of ex-pats moving back to NB and NS right now, the winds of change are starting to blow on what was once considered standard political thought that passed for policy here in the Maritimes for the past 40 years. jbg Posted June 21, 2008 Report Posted June 21, 2008 I think you mean from American to English.Another translation issue. We speak English in the United States. What Chretien and Dion speak, I haven't a clue but I take that to be speaking in Canadian. Quote Free speech: "You can say what you want, but I don't have to lend you my megaphone."
