A new model for the NHL

Recommended Posts

The NHL made a really bad decision some time ago and decided to expand into the US south. Nobody down there gives a good god-damn about hockey. Look at the pathetic attendance figues for playoff seats - we be talkin' two-fers here.

It's time to get rid of the losers. I am in favour of the Jimmy Patttison model. Any team that does not make the playoffs has to put its franchise up for auction in Europe. Imagine a league with teams from Moscow, Stockholm, Prague, Helsinki, Saint Petersburg...

Hockey heaven.

Well let us look at attendance figures for playoff games in the US south. Perhaps there will be a reason no one gives a goddamn about attending.

Looks like you are right.

Florida Panthers -0

Tampa Bay -0

Atlanta Thrashers -0

Nashville Predators -more than 0

Nashville was the only team from the south to make the playoffs.

Hockey hell. And they could not afford to buy most of the teams. Maybe some in the Russian Super League , but almost no where else.

The Czechs are sports demons. The Swedes...

The National dream could do a lot better. After all, hasn't Europe been our traditional threat?

THE MIGHTY FRIGGIN DUCKS? Come on.

The best thing that could happen to the NHL is to expand to Europe, they would get more TV revenue than they could ever hope to get from the US. The only way for the Leaf to get a better team is to give a franchise to Hamilton, a little bit of competition from a team down the road may wake them up; for the past 40 years they have been guaranteed a full house despite having a lousy team. The fans deserve better.

Think this one through for a moment.

Virtually no players would move..'cept for the czechs and lower rung players.

No one could afford to pay the salaries since there is no base to speak of.

No Europe is not our tradtional threat. Russia used to be, the US is now , and with growth, Sweden and Finland may be one day.

That is not to say the Swedes cant beat us, they surely can (they should have won Gold in 02 at the Olympics-thank you Thommi whathisnameBerg) but not consistently.

The Americans will in time beat us on a 50-50 basis. So many players in the US that the odds are this will happen.

Edit to add: Aint no team called the Mighty Ducks. You are so last year.

IMO that would be the worst thing. The lockout proved that. Almost to a man the players said NO to having games there. A diff style of play, lousy refs , not the game they know and love.

Hamilton cannot afford a team. Not enough business to support a team, and an owner would have to pay huge....and I mean huge bucks to get the Leafs to waive the non-comp clause. Between that, building a new arena, and the pruchase of a team.....I doubt they could get A and B done let alone C.

If Hamilton could re build itself, get rid of Stelco and turn that bay into homes (beautiful they would be and$$$) bewteen that and the mountain they would have a fantastic city to attract business. They are situated perfectly for flights & access to the US . Then they could go after a team.

Jim Balsillie....please buy the Leafs from the dumbass Teachers Pension.
