Currency abuses are high on the list these days, for obvious reasons.

But he wasn't involved in any currency abuse. And the entire net of laws around the transferring of currency is to try and keep an eye on terrorists and the mafiosos. Who the hell cares about a guy hiding his sexual games from journalists and his wife? How is it the state's business what Spitzer does with his money if it's not harming anyone?

At heart Argus, you have struck one simple point: Where to draw the line? Where do we draw the line in general for ordinary citizens? And where do we draw the line for public officials?

When should the public have the right to see what any private individual is doing? When should the public know what its political representatives are doing?

I am with those who say that if the state needed this kind of banking surveillance to keep an eye out for terrorists and organized crime bosses then fine - but the moment they realized that this didn't involve terrorism or bribery or corruption on Spitzer's part they should have dropped it.

Technically, you are supposed to report income even from illegal sources. Is it not true that Revenue Canada does not then report this to the police? Even if you admit your money is the proceeds of illegal behaviour?

The ones who are hurt are the general polity, who lose confidence that the same law that applies to them applies to people with power and influenc.

Oh please. It's a nice egalitarian idea but no one really believes that. You generally get whatever consideration in law you can afford to pay for. Spitzer made powerful enemies, and I have little doubt that is what is behind this. Whenever someone rich goes down it's usually because they ran afoul of some other powerful person or group's agenda. NOT because they were being held to the same standards as Joe Lunchbox.

Because the banks are to report any suspicious movements, and then the matter takes on a life of its own.

The appearance has to be that they are held to the same standards. And given the way he abused his adversaries while in power he didn't earn much in the way of mercy.

I think the State should check people before boarding an airplane. I have no problem with a policeman checking the contents of a car. I object to police listening to telephone conversations or receiving records of bank transactions.

You cannot have it both ways. Either a person has privacy of person, contents and papers or he doesnt. To look into either a warrant must be supplied. (not if they want to go on private property where the rules are made by the host-ot plain view scenarios)

Off topic.

I agree. At least with some of you. Spitzer is an idiot. He prosecuted something he was participating in.

But this is not why I started this thread.

Is it time to legalize prostitution?
I can see arguments both ways. I'd want to study how legalized prostitution is doing in Nevada before reaching a conclusion. It's hard to believe that it isn't unreasonably dangerous to both parties, even if legal, since the prostitute holds a real hammer over her customers' marriages and public standing and G-d only knows what a strong man can do to a stranger if something goes wrong during the encounter.

Maybe some one should read this. I think the prostitution thing is just a ploy to keep anyone from investigating further.

"While New Youk govenor Eliot Spitzer was paying an 'escort' $4300 in a hotel room in Washington, just down the road, George Bush's new federal reserve board chairman, Ben Bernanke, was secretly handing over $200 billion in a tryst with morgage bank industry speculators."

It was a good way to get rid of Mr. Spitzer and everyone knows that politicians have a penchant for getting themselves in hot water over a call girl. It happened in the US, in Canada, And in Britian didn't it. So why is this one so important.

It's all a 'vast right wing conspiracy' then? Thank you Mrs. Clinton. Spitzer's own party didn't support him. They thought he was a bully.

Stranger things have happened haven't they and quite regularly. We are a bunch of inocents if we think that what we are told and what really goes on are the same thing.

Sounds like you are into conspiracy theories not fact. Spitzer got caught because of large cash withdrawals from bank accounts. These are regularly scrutinized and for good reason: criminal and terorist activity.

He made his own bed and lay in it.

Well you just gotta love it! David Paterson has announced that he has had extra-marital affairs in the past, and his wife has announced that she has too! Finally, the perfect comeback for the cuckolded political spouse. If only Hilary had thought of this!

Hot damn! Make this woman a senator!
