GostHacked Posted November 20, 2007 Report Posted November 20, 2007 Homebuilders? Look, the banks are just businesses. If you are compkaining about banks, you should be complaining about Canadian banks - well actually - the Canadian bank act. It restricts competition. There are good things in it which prevent bank failures compared to the US but it really needs to be reformed. Yes they are a business. They are in the business of making money off of everyone elses money. Plain and simple. I have yet to be a homeowner, so much of this I will admit, I know little about. So I am just throwing out there, what is in my head and what I interperet. Look, you seem to be arguing that banks shoudl lose more money - but leet me tell you, when a bank closes up shop, no one wins including you. The bank can lose money because the value of that 'asset' can go down in value when it starts happening alot - which is exactly what is going on in alot of home markets in the US. No I don't argue they should lose more money, but I won't shed a tear if they do not make a billion dollars for last quarter. The banks play a role in that housing market and seem to influence greatly (lending to developers, then to homeowners). Dishing out all the money to new homeowners who (some) will eventually end up in poverty will hurt the banks bottom line. And that is all the investors care about, the bottom line, they don't care how it is acheived. But as someone stated in this thread already, the market will go up and down.... so eventually it will go back up. If it does not, then the bank should really rethink their strategy when it comes to investing in the housing market. Overall this is probably a loss they can overcome. How did the banks do during the Great Depression? And if there is another Depression, why is the US at the center of this collapse? PS: It's spelled 'lose'. ie: The leafs will 'lose' to the sens next game. not: You're girlfriend is 'loose' Why is that word mis spelled so often? I also get messed up on I before E except (sometimes) after C. Quote

White Doors Posted November 20, 2007 Report Posted November 20, 2007 The banks only lend out what people ask of them to lend. They aren't crack dealers. I do agree with your conclusion, that Banks make too much money - I just think they need more competition in the market place, not more regulation. I say one thing about regulation and banks, I wish there was better regulation on how banks communicate with clients. I got a notice in the mail from American Express about changes to the cardholder agreement. Now I will not dwell that the entire pamphlet (not even a letter) was in 6 point type and I almost needed a magnifying glass to read it....I will take issue on how the pampket was paginated....the pages were not in sequence (1,2,3,4,5,9,6,8,7,10,12,11,13, 14) and the part outlining the changes were so convoluted, a lawyer would have had difficulty making heads or tails.....
