I think after he's gone though that the inquiry will be called off.
Let's put it this way. An inquiry is a complete waste of time if it depends entirely on schiebers testamony. If there is other evidence that can be considered then we can still have the inquiry. More imporantly, any conditions that Schrieber places on giving his version of events renders it meaningless so we would much better off deporting him and then see if he decides to testify anyways. If he did we could place more weight on what he says. Edited by Riverwind

In a nutshell, apparently Switzerland accuses Germany of gathering evidence that under international rules would not be admissible in a court of law. Other international agencies agree with Switzerland and say that Canada's international reputation and relations could be harmed by allowing this deportation.

It's for up to a german judge to decide if the evidence is admissible or not. I'd argue our international reputation and relations could be harmed if we didn't allow deportation.

IMO this inquiry would not be happening if Harper himself wasn't named in the affidavit and if Mulroney hadn't asked for it.

Let's suppose Harper's name had not been mentioned in Schreiber's affidavit. The affidavit makes accusations against Mulroney's conduct while he was still Prime Minister. On that basis alone, I think Harper would have reacted in the same way because the integrity of the Office of the Prime Minister (Mulroney at the time) was the subject of the allegations.

You PM'd me on the matter on August 24th.

So are you admitting and trying to justify your use of the inappropriate Stevey?

Maybe that explains this:

Why exactly did you bring up the Steph line?

Admitting what? That his name is steve and not stevey?

I didnt bring it up, you walked that road in trying to tell me not to use stevey, when in fact you are guilty of steph, and for which I really do not care what he is called. His big head reminds me of stewie from family guy, so stevey is what I call him

MB, dont be so thin skinned. It is no affront to you.

Politicians shouldn't step in. It should be up to ours judges to decide that.

Funny, because the judges said the exact opposite...

While the courts have a role in judging whether someone can be extradited - by ensuring, for example, that the crime being prosecuted in a foreign country would also be considered a relatively serious offence in Canada - it is the minister who makes the final decision.

One of the reasons cited by the Ontario Court of Appeal in rejecting Mr. Schreiber's case yesterday was that the court owed deference to the minister's right to make a political decision about extraditing him, and that was being frustrated by years of court appeals.

"The decision to surrender is essentially a political decision," the court noted

Almost three thousand people died needlessly and tragically at the World Trade Center on September 11; ten thousand Africans die needlessly and tragically every single day-and have died every single day since September 11-of AIDS, TB, and malaria. We need to keep September 11 in perspective, especially because the ten thousand daily deaths are preventable.

This is the way it should play out. No more pussyfooting around. If an appeal is filed in the SCOC by his lawyers the Supremes nix his appeal. Schreiber is extradited on December 1 as planned with the understanding he will testify before the inquiry one way another via satellite as he sits on the throne in his 4'x6' jail cell.

He is placed in a German jail without bail awaiting trial. During his trial he suffers a massive heart attack and croaks.

Without the key witness, the inquiry is canceled and we save millions of dollars. The Conservatives and Liberals then argue about who scared Schreiber the most to bring on his demise.

Seriously, the Justice Minister should call Schreiber's bluff that he won't talk if sent to Germany and boot him out on December 1. Then Mr. Johnston gets on with his work to define the terms of reference of a public inquiry. Worry about the logistics after this report is filed in mid-January. Schreiber will then be deprived of a soap box to wail and complain how he is unjustly treated here. You know, the next thing he'll claim is he is facing unlawful prosecution in Germany. Wait for it.
