August1991 Posted December 18, 2007 Report Posted December 18, 2007 (edited) Funny thing is, I agree that the UN is useless, but for completely opposite reasons. The general Assembly is a circle jerk while the real power rests with the self-serving membership of the SC. But that latter factoid would undermine your whole premise so, as is your wont, you pretend it is not so.UN and power are antonyms, so I guess that I agree with BD.Incidentally, we have discussed this before. United Nations, Die? End as we know it? Bolton demands UN apology, U.S ambassador rebukes UN speech In that thread, I posted: Maybe, if it works, the UN will avoid death and destruction and maybe, ordinary people will benefit. During the Cold War, the UN paid for its existence if only because it gave a credible venue for Adlai Stevenson to make America's case against the Soviets about missiles in Cuba. If the UN had existed in July 1914, maybe world history would have been different.Nowadays, the UN is no longer an ideal or even a useful talking shop. The building itself is a rat infested cesspool with broken 1960s furniture. I think they still use IBM Selectrics. The UN is an anti-semitic organization, Governed by hatred and bigotry U.N. not impartial, U.N. finding bumper-sticker campaign That thread has this link: Despite the current investigations into his brother, his son, his son's best friend, his former chief of staff, his procurement officer and the executive director of the UN's biggest ever programme, the Secretary-General insists he remains committed to staying on and tackling the important work of "reforming" the UN.Unfortunately, his Executive Co-Ordinator for United Nations Reform has also had to resign. Officially, Maurice Strong, Under-Secretary-General, godfather of the Kyoto treaty and chief UN negotiator on North Korea, resigned because he'd put his step-daughter on the payroll - she's also quit - and because of his ties to Tongsun Park, a Korean businessman charged by the US Attorney's office with taking millions of dollars from Saddam to act as an unregistered foreign agent for Iraq. Mark Steyn - Daily TelegraphIran elected Vice-Chair of UN Disarmament Commission Of them all, IMV, John Bolton got the UN right. The UN is an example of what a bureaucracy becomes after 50 years with no accountability. If you think Ottawa is out of touch with the real world, you have never met a UN bureaucrat in New York. As much as I think the environment requires protection, the mere fact that the UN is behind the IPCC is enough for me to question its validity. Edited December 18, 2007 by August1991 Quote

jbg Posted December 23, 2007 Author Report Posted December 23, 2007 This post is cross posted here:http://www.bloggingtories.ca/forums/topic4675.html This is monotonous. I can post anything on any forum I like. I wrote it. You didn't. Quote Free speech: "You can say what you want, but I don't have to lend you my megaphone." Will the steps anyone is proposing to fight "climate change" reduce a single temperature, by a single degree, at a single location? The mantra of "world opinion" or the views of the "international community" betrays flabby and weak reasoning (link).
Higgly Posted December 31, 2007 Report Posted December 31, 2007 This is monotonous. I can post anything on any forum I like. I wrote it. You didn't. Cross-posting is not allowed on most fora I frequent. The purpose of the policy is to enforce a sort of de facto copyright that cannot be enforced otherwise. You came here to post your arguments because you feel this is a forum that matters. It will matter less if you shop it around to a lot of other places. If you want to syndicate your ideas, maybe you should start your own web site. Quote "We have seen the enemy and he is us!". Pogo (Walt Kelly).

What if the other forum is based in another country, i.e. the US, with its own language and customs? The boards are not competitive if we are talking about cross-posting with a US board because of linguistic and cultural differences. jbg Posted July 4, 2015 Author Report Posted July 4, 2015 (edited) Apparently someone else agrees: Why is not a single leader advocating withdrawal from the UN? I couldn't tell you, but I certainly think both our countries should withdraw. See link to thread I started on this subject.
