DogOnPorch Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 Light pollution in my city has gotten worse over the years...thank-you CN Railyard. My old 6 inch reflector doesn't cut it anymore. Need to get quite far from the city to rid the sky of the orange sodium glow. Gotta love that Dionysus...imported god of wine and rage. I'm fairly up on mythology...just throwing it up the pole seeing who salutes. I agree with your interpretation of Roman myth...no canon...no central authority. What about Hinduism? Polytheism that never made it to Monotheism? I agree with the James Burke view re: history being a series of sometimes random events each building upon the other. Serious about Celestia and Orbiter if you want some excellent views of the Universe via your computer. Celestia in action on YouTube. ----------------------------------------------------- Whoopee! I agree with your interpretation of Roman myth...no canon...no central authority. What about Hinduism? Polytheism that never made it to Monotheism? I'm not up on Hinduism as I would like to be, on the otherhand it isn't as accessable as it could be. I've read the Mahabharato and the ramayana a few times and I enjoyed them quite a bit. You could argue as you allude that hinduism was moving towards monotheism (although whether the argument holds, I don't know...) The many avatars and incarnations of Vishnu are surely but one god. But then there's Ganesh and Hannowman (sp?) I have often thought that Hinduism is the closest thing left to the classical pagan cults...they have their sacred whores, their mystery cults, cults that engage in excess and cults that are aestetic. Pass the chivas and coke, three cheers for Shiva! Quote RIGHT of SOME, LEFT of OTHERS If it is a choice between them and us, I choose us

DogOnPorch Posted November 15, 2007 Report Posted November 15, 2007 (edited) What about Uranus? Heheh...reminds me of this classic Drew Carey, Jeff Foxworthy comedy clip. From a scientific point of view though, Uranus is quite incredible. A vast family of moons orbiting close to the ringed parent planet that is tilted over on it side due to some ancient collision. Not a great telescope target, though. Too far away...looks just like a very small fuzzy grey dot. Neptune...same deal...only farther and smaller. But it's a good time to see them (November 2007). We'd need to send out another mission like Voyager to get more details...though the Hubble ST has snapped a few detailed shots. Of course...during ancient times, Uranus and Neptune...and (of course) Pluto/Charon were totally unknown to humankind. ---------------------------------------------------------------- I have looked further into space than any human being did before me. ---William Herschel Edited November 15, 2007 by DogOnPorch Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.
jbg Posted November 16, 2007 Report Posted November 16, 2007 In other words in judaism the central tenants of righteousness, justice ...mitzvahs are what make it a religion and are in essence of grater importance than the career choices of Noah's grandchildren. Is righteousness the landlord? I do see that you persist in mis-spelling a host of other words. Quote Free speech: "You can say what you want, but I don't have to lend you my megaphone."
