You had it right at the start, it makes individuals rich. With the nation debt of the US being the highest it has ever been, I fail to see how this makes everyone in the US richer. But feel free to point out where I am wrong.

US debt is very high, but not highest as a percentage of GDP. Indeed, the Americans nearly went broke helping to fight the war for Throne and Empire without a setting sun. Nevertheless, the US is the wealthiest nation in the world, even when public and private debt is accounted for.

Households alone had $55,600,000,000,000 total net worth in 2006.

It would appear that "wars" have been a good investment. Canada made a bundle during the Vietnam War as well.

Economics trumps Virtue.
