Didn't Paul Martin run his last campaign on the danger to Canadians of having someone from Alberta as Prime Minister? I have a vague memory of his sinister allusions to foreign influences (Ie Alberta influences) in a conservative government, a danger to the values of all good, honest, hard-working central Canadians...

It doesn't help that Liberal leaders have offered them nothing, and quite the contrary, have, in effect, campaigned against Alberta's interests in order to curry favour elsewhere.

aww, the poor prisoners of Ontario

I value my life. I spend a considerable amount of my life working in order to support myself and buy things. Some punk coming in and stealing those things is, in effect, stealing all the hard work and time I put into getting that stuff. Now I'm not saying shooting the guy should be a first response, but certainly a nice solid whipping would be a proper way for society to deal with thieves. -

Which is an indication jail is too soft. We need hard labour to make things more unpleasant in there. -

I don't care if it acts as a deterrent. If they're in there, then they're not out here - with me. So keep them in there as long as possible, preferably permanently. -
Absolute bloody nonsense. Nuclear? Why not try aeronautics? Quebec wouldn't have an aerospace industry without all that federal money. Bombardier would have gone broke decades ago. Then there's the expensive dairy plans which guarantee huge payments to dairy farmers, most of whom are in Quebec. We could buy milk from New York at half the price. In every federal program, Quebec gets at least its share and usually more than its share due to incessant whining. We even move federal government buildings all the way to Shawinigan, Quebec, Trois Rivieres, Montreal, etc, not to mention the ones in Gatineau. Money for ports, bridges highways, airports, far more than anyone else gets. The only reason Quebec hasn't separated is that despite all the sniveling and whining and complaints in public, the Quebec elites know in private that without the money coming from the other provinces they'd be bankrupt their first year of independence.

How do you 'rehabilitate' a man? Those prisoners who go on drug and alcohol treatment and stick to it can be changed. But those who are career criminals are not going to change because you chat with them and show them the 'error of their ways'. The only reason they'll ever change is when they get tired of spending so much time in jail. -

We're talking about the life of a thief. That's not worth very much at all, and certainly not worth anything to a stranger. The stranger's own property is considerably more valuable. He likely worked very hard for it, after all. -
Nobody factors in operating costs for the next two decades, and calls that the price of the car. And that is exactly what we're doing with these jets.

Uhm, the US does not have a left wing government. Taxes are lower on gas there. Taxes are much higher on gas in places with left wing governments, ie, Europe. So how is it you think bringing in a left wing government would lower taxes? Gasoline prices explained

From my perspective, if you're too lazy to vote, good. Don't. I have no desire to see such lazy people encouraged to vote. That's particularly so of the young, who in addition to being lazy are generally almost entirely free of knowledge about anything remotely connected with government, economics or finance. Why do you believe encouraging stupid people to vote is a good thing? -
Funny how that hasn't happened ANYWHERE on the planet, eh? Fact is the price of gas is pretty much the same throughout the West. But taxes on the gas vary wildly, and are far higher in Europe than here. Thus the price of gas is much higher there than here.

Bob Rae WAS the worst, but he has been easily surpassed by Dalton McGuinty.

The boomers were the most fiscally selfish and irresponsible generation this country has ever seen. You know, when the boomers were born, their parents paid for a lavish building boom in schools. When the boomers had children they said "I'm not paying for new schools! Stick em in portables!". They also wanted all kinds of goodies, but didn't want to pay for them. Trudeau told them they didn't need to worry, doubling spending, then doubling it again, and building up the huge debt we'll be paying off for generations.
-
Rae is not going to replace Iggy. By their constitution, the Liberals must select a Francophone for their next leader.
-
I never got the idea they were being fiscally prudent because they cared about fiscal prudence. Chretien simply saw no reason to address any of the problems of the country given the disunity among the opposition and his huge poll leads. Liberals spend money to buy votes. They didn't feel the need to buy votes until the right wing parties merged. Then you saw an entirely different Liberal party. You saw massive spending, and plans for more massive spending.
-
Chretien was a crooked bum who cared about nothing but himself. Martin, out of Chretien's shadow, was a spendthrift.

You have one report, completely unsubstantiated, from bystanders, that he sort of, not tried to grab it, but looked like he was intending to try to grab it... And that's it. There have been no complaints from the returning officer or other election workers at that 'poll' and yet you guys are basically ready to have the tory guy executed out of hand. Funny how soft you all are on real criminals, but let a tory put his hands somewhere in the general direction of a ballot box and it's "Off with his head!" -
If they're applied intelligently. The thing is, those countries were all pretty much homogenous and middle class to begin with. They've had moderately sensible socialist policies for a few decades and done fairly well, in most cases, by that. But the NDP is still into the class warfare anti-establishment, anti-business, anti-capitalism mindset which sees middle class white people as the enemy of all the poor and downtrodden. First thing they'd do is raise taxes on corporations and the rich (rich being anyone making more than minimum wage). Then they'd put mandatory hiring quotas in place for all businesses forcing them to hire and promote women and minorities. They'd funnel tens of billions to native reserves, and double immigration.
-
Do you actually think the price of gas and oil would go DOWN under an NDP government? With all the environmental fines and levees the NDP would put on them, and the taxes they'd put on oil to "encourage environmentalism" you'd be paying twice as much. The price of gas is much higher in Europe, and they're all labour or socialist governments.
-
Maybe if the NDP ever grows up and out of it's nineteen fifties class warfare mentality and starts looking to represent all Canadians instead of just the 'special' ones. But that's not going to happen under the current mob.
