Hmmm. I seem to remember when I lived in Hamilton hearing about many more workers being laid off from Stelco (unionized) than Dofasco (non-unionized). Interesting .

Actually, Chief Blair did not institute this policy. It was recommended by a city councillor but has been denounced by the force.See this article. The best way to curb this violence is for the police to get out of their damned cruisers and start walking the beat again. Build a rapport with the people in these troubled communities, help out with fundraisers, charity events, organize local sports tournaments etc. In this way, people will begin to see the police as people too, and start to trust them. Then the community will be willing to help them in confronting and ending the violence. Unfortunately, as my wife pointed out ot me, it's a dollars and cents thing. The city cannot afford this kind of manpower right now, and no one likes tax raises.

If I understand correctly though, thanks to NAFTA, if we open up our health care system to private companies, US corporations will have a distinct advantage. Something about preferred country status? Correct me if I'm wrong (which I hope I am in this case )

ICAP 2005 Speaking Notes from OMA President Dr G. Flynn I think maybe government should start pressing the lost productivity and other related costs (increased health ins cost, disability pymnts, etc) aspect of this to try and get industry on board. Individually, we can all do our part, but without industry on side, meeting the goals will be very difficult. P.S. lmao

Globe and Mail Article In a democracy, is it not the idea to compromise to come to a solution? Should the parties not be trying to work together to come to an agreement? Yet this is the same group of seperatists that the Conservatives were working with to topple the government last month. So is this democracy in action, or sneaky underhanded Liberal antics to pass the budget while some conservatives are not present?

Anarchy Law Note that the definition of law requires authority. Without humans, a government free society probably would be a Utopia. Unfortunately for me, I live in the real world, where a government free society would be chaos. Where do you live Hugo? So I ask you again, what gives you the right to abrogate some of my rights? Why can I not do the same to you? Perhaps to me, my right to a nationality is more important than my right to life. You believe vice versa. Which of us is more right? Who is to decide? And I would say that Canada is an innate part of being Canadian. And yes, Dunkirk was in 1940, I realized that last night after I had turned off my PC. I apologize for the mistake in dates. -

From BD: From Hugo: So one of you says my rights exist because I believe they do, while they other says my Country does not exist even though I believe it does. Interesting. You both seem to despise the state (government), yet you also both laud your rights. Interestingly enough, these rights were set forth by the UN, the government of all governments. As well, if the two of you had your way, we would live in a government free society (which, by default would be lawless, see def'n of anarchy). Unfortunately this would remove some of MY rights, such as, oh I don't know: "Everyone has the right to recognition everywhere as a person before the law." "All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law. All are entitled to equal protection against any discrimination in violation of this Declaration and against any incitement to such discrimination." And lets not forget, the lack of nations would also remove some of my rights, such as: "Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country." "(1) Everyone has the right to a nationality." "(2) No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his nationality nor denied the right to change his nationality." "(1) Everyone has the right to take part in the government of his country, directly or through freely chosen representatives." "(2) Everyone has the right of equal access to public service in his country." "(3) The will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government; this will shall be expressed in periodic and genuine elections which shall be by universal and equal suffrage and shall be held by secret vote or by equivalent free voting procedures." Just to mention a few. There are more of course, but I won't bore you with the details. Or do the two of you get to decide which of my rights are valid and which aren't? And by the way Hugo, you said your father was forced into the army, and watched his friends die at Dunkirk. Dunkirk was in 1939. Conscription did not begin until 1944 (except for homeland defence, which was a farce). The falseness of your story does have relevance as it brings your character into question, as AG pointed out. -

All right. That is your opinion. I think we can agree to disagree on that. By Nazis I am sure you understand that you are reffering to the political party. There are very few politicians that I respect. And Nazis would certainly not be among them. The German people were not evil, but circumstances resulting from the peace treaties of the first world war allowed the rise of evil men into power. For your individual examples, as I am sure you are well aware, there are exceptions to every rule. Himmler was more of a policy maker than a soldier though. Mengele was a sadistic monster, but he was also a doctor. Does this mean all doctors are evil too?? I'll even give you another name that has more relevance to North American soldiers: Clayton Matchee. He is not worthy of respect either. That honestly confuses me. A false lie? Does that mean it is true?? Anyway, I think you should realise that soldiers (I am speaking from my experience with Canadian soldiers, I cannot speak for the rest) generally do not want or like war. The only ones that desire combat are ones who have not yet been to a war zone and seen the results. Veterans of UN or NATO missions who have seen the devastation, would generally be quite happy assisting in emergency situations (eg - Red River Flood, Ice storms) here at home. These soldiers would be among the first in line if you ever found the Utopia you seem to be seeking. Unfortunately, this is the real world, and they are needed here. So again, I suggest that we can simply agree to disagree. -

Well...I guess I opened up a big ole can of worms saying that soldiers are better people than most. I think you should all take note the use of the word MOST in that quote. I put Firefighters, Police Officers, SAR personnel, etc in that category. Essentially these are all people who are willing to put their lives at risk to help others. To me, that is very noble. The fact that you do not believe in the cause gives you no right to sh!t all over them and display pictures of their mangled corpses to the whole world. If all you love is money, then so be it. But do not assume that honourable men and women are lower than you because they believe in something bigger. -

I am very glad that your ignorant and selfish views were not prevalent in '39 through '45. -

Spoken like someone who never has, and never will, put his life on the line and fight for his country. -
IMO, because of Ontario and Quebec. The NDP don't really seem to connect to Quebecers (sp?) for some reason. Maybe Bakunin or August could provide some insight as to why. As for Ontario, I wasn't really following politics when Bob Rae was in, but if I remember correctly, he seemed to think that he could spend his way out of a recession. Ontario voters are probably still a little suspect of the NDP because of this, myself included. I am not sure that they would make a good government yet. Opposition though, hmmm.

So you are saying that Ms. Dyer needs to see a picture of what happened to her son to make her believe that war is a bad thing? Really? How many American soldiers have you spoken to recently that makes you so sure of this? -
Is Dryden's child care plan what parents want?
Chimera replied to Canuck E Stan's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I don't think this is necessarily true. From what I see in my area, the only reason people are working more is because they are trying to "keep up with the Jones's". Everybody seems to want to drive a brand new car (if not an SUV), have a big expensive house, and fill it with plasma TV's, big stereos, etc, etc. People no longer live within their means. If you want proof, just look in the parking lot of the local Wal-Mart (or other bargain store) and count how many BMW's, Mercedes, Hummers, et al there are. I will however admit that the government does not make it easy to save money with all the taxes we must pay. -

BD, Most of these pictures should not be shown to the general public for one reason: Respect. Be it respect for the dead or their families, take your pick. At least those men and women had the b@lls to fight and die for a cause they believed in. That alone makes them better human beings than most. Wether or not you believe in the cause is irrelevant. -
What a rediculous statement. None of our elected leaders are thieves except in the imagination of conservative supporters. This is a perfect example of why the conservatives are down in the polls - Canadians are getting tired of these kinds of exagerations and outright deceptions coming from the conservative party supporters. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> At least you're willing to admit that they are liars!

Easy there Shakey, no need to get your panties in a knot. I am simply implying that obtaining and keeping power is the ONLY goal of these two (and quite likely all - except the BQ) political parties. If it were not, this minority government would most likely be quite effective.

As opposed to the Liberal high ground of doing anything to stay in power?

Yeah, you're right, he was such an a$$ We didn't really need any health care or other liberal social programs in the eighties anyway.

Although it was not "illegal wiretapping", if Grewal did indeed approach the Liberals requesting a position first, then try to nail them for allegedly bribing him with said position, I think that might be bordering on entrapment. Just a thought. -
WOW... OH...MY...GOD.... I, I just didn't realise what I was doing I guess. Thank you very much for such eloquent prose in debunking the source. Geesh, Hey everybody, please disregard that source, in fact, maybe we should even ask to have the link permanently deleted from this site. Heck, maybe we even ought to collect every published work of hers and burn it after that enlightening revelation. Thank you once again for steering me away from the path to the dark side.

Do you complain to your mother when she increases your allowance?? Does this bring healthcare spending back up to a 50/50 split. No. It does not. This is just another political party doing everything it can to try and stay in power. I am glad that their is more money going to health care now. You'll have to forgive me my cynicism though, as it is too little too late. The cuts made in the 90's have done their damage. Many more will die because of it. We all sleep in the bed we make.
-
OK Hugo, I'll play along with you here for a minute. Let's say that this wonderful free market enterprise came into being in the health care sector. We'll even pretend that human greed does not play a factor in skimping out on services such as paying certified health workers (nurses) to increase the bottom line. Everything is wonderful, everybody is happy. What happens when the next Black Tuesday comes to pass? I could not agree with you more.

If The feds were still funding 50%, they would have had every right to that information as it would then be a joint partnership, instead of a minority shareholder, to use business terms. BTW, a billion dollars, divided by ten provinces and three territories. How many billions did the Liberals slash the healthcare budget by again??? Sorry, I guess I was wrong. The liberals have been very good for health care.
-
Of course, you do realise that had the federal government kept up their part of the healthcare bargain (50% funding), they would have been able to control where the money goes. Liberals have no moral leg to stand on regarding healthcare. They are akin to the vikings on that subject.
