I submit that, and I've said this before, that the media never ever gives the whole entire story on anything. Their stories are edited into tiny little 30 second, 1 or 2 minute sound bites (generally) which isn't enough time to give the whole story of anything. Add to that the biases of various news media, whether liberal, conservative or whatever, and we don't have a chance.

Canada's cold shoulder to U.S.
Newfie Canadian replied to Stoker's topic in Canada / United States Relations
Well the President is going to Ottawa at the end of the month. His first state visit since he took office in 2000. I suspect there will be a lot of pictures and nice words but very little substance, as usual. I wonder where PM PM will send Carolyn Parrish for those 2 days. -
What Is Wrong With Nova Scotia Power?
Newfie Canadian replied to maplesyrup's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
That could probably be said about every government in the country. The thing about the recent power outages in NS is it hasn't happened before like this. I would submit that it isn't all weather related. I live in Atlantic Canada, and while that much snow is strange for this time of year, it happens. And it is going to get worse during the winter months. What's going to happen then? I wouldn't be very confident if I lived in NS right now. -
Congratulations to General Henault. It's a testament to the professionalism of our Armed Forces. EDIT- Forgot link. http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/stor...?hub=TopStories Question: Is it going to put pressure in Martin to pony up some much needed money for defence?

What Is Wrong With Nova Scotia Power?
Newfie Canadian replied to maplesyrup's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
Good call August. It was indeed privatized in 1992, and is subject to a regulatory body called UARB (Utilities And Review Board) for rate increases and the like. It's part of a parent company called Emera, which has operations in the NE US, but from what I can find they are a Canadian based company (based in NS). -

It's a monopoly, and I think monopolies have a tendancy to become complacent when the threat of a better competition isn't there. I believe another result of a monopoly is that they are regulated to the point where they cut corners anywhere to save money to put towards the bottom line. Another thing is, and we've seen it in Quebec with the ice storms a few years ago, the blackout last year in Ontario and the NE US, and the 3 major power outages in the last year in NS, that serious upgrades to the power infrastructure is needed, everywhere. Ironic that today they were supposed to go before the provincial regulatory body to ask for a rate increase. -
NDP Gains the Most in Latest Poll (Nov 10/04)
Newfie Canadian replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Speaking as an Atlantic Canadian, eqaulization has no direct bearing on how I vote. First, I look at the people running. Keep in mind that the biggest urban centers in the Atlantic region would be considered medium sized suburbs to places like Vancouver, Edmonton, Toronto or Montréal, so it's easy to know more about the people running in your area. The biggest center in my district has about 5000-6000, and my district of Avalon covers the entire Avalon Peninsula except St. John's and it's immediate area. Then I look at the party. Atlantic Canadians have had a hard time forgetting the attitudes and remarks of Harper in 2002 when he said that Atlantic Canadians suffered from a "defeatist attitude". In NL, the CPC carries the baggage of the federal PC party, which presided over the loss of the railway and the closure of the cod fishery. The CPC has done very little to overcome these gaffes/deficiencies/attitudes. I've explained in other posts the perception of the NDP. -
I am neither a theologian, philosopher or metaphysicist, so my head is spinning a little. But, my first thought when I saw this question was there would be a breakdown of order, decency and law, as all are based on one form or another on religious doctrine, beliefs, scripture and laws. However, upon further reflection, I would submit that society (in Canada for example) is cemented enough in regards to constitutional rights and laws for this not to happen. Unless in your hypothetical the dismemberment of all things religious includes the disposal of the Charter as many things in it (murder for example) are based on religion, and we have to start over. Hope I haven't rambled, my head hurts. I would submit that this could never happen. It takes numerous religions with their own practices and beliefs satisfy the population. I don't believe 1 could do it.

Question for hard-right theocrats
Newfie Canadian replied to The Terrible Sweal's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
It doesn't say that it is a sin exactly, but: Lev. 18:22This question wasn't addressed to me, sorry for butting in here TTS, but I was just trying to help stamps with their point. For the record, I do not have a problem with gay marriage. Exeunt with a flourish. -
And here's to the price of oil staying above $50 a barrell. Just kidding stamps.

US Citizens Are Coming, US Citizens Are Coming
Newfie Canadian replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I don't know, I wasn't born or old enough to realize. Intelligent and constructive commentary certainly. Was that what Parrish did, offer intelligent and constructive commentary? Elephants don't roar, they trumpet. Trudeau spoke intelligently and accurately when he spoke those famous words. He said we are affected with every twitch and grunt. What are we going to do with a trumpet? Look, I'm not saying don't criticize the US (Lord knows I've done plenty of it, and wil continue to). I'm not saying roll over every time they want something. I'm not saying agree with the US on everything. I'm not saying kowtow to their every demand. But why be insulting, degrading and crass? No one has said yet how it helps anyone. -

I hear what you're saying IMR, she's been an MP since 1993 so she must be doing something right, but even if she's right she was wrong to say what she said and how she said it. Paul Martin has promised that all current Liberal MP's wouldn't have to go through the normal riding nomination process in the next election. I wonder if he will make an exvception for Parrish. EDIT* For the record, we aren't the only destination apparently. -

I wouldn't be too sure, Cartman. There are media personalities, particularly from the right, that zero in on these things like a smart bomb. They love repeating anything negative, so it seems. In regards of a wide range of Americans hearing and caring about it, who knows? So what you're saying is it is OK to sink to that level. I don't believe that for a second. Plus, you would think that as a former teacher, a writer and now parliamentarian, she'd be more articulate and diplomatic. -
USA outperforming Canada
Newfie Canadian replied to CdnRepublican's topic in Canada / United States Relations
We'll see. Like I said, I'm not an expert, but I do know that in the last decade or so numerous challenges have been brought against the lumber and wheat industries, and everytime the WTO and NAFTA dispute panels shoot them down. That's all I'm going by in this area. It will never unilaterally happen. The only chance of something like that happening is through the WTO, as we saw in August. In regards to the military, you're preaching to the choir here. It has been seriously underfunded for well over a decade. The imigration system is still weird, but the percentage of refugee admittance for the US and Canada are within a few points of each other, as of 2003. Security is a better issue in that we've done more in the last couple of years, but like all western democracies, we have a way to go. -
US Citizens Are Coming, US Citizens Are Coming
Newfie Canadian replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
She's a politician who has an obligation to think of others. 1) She did this in the face of a directive from her PM to not do exactly what she did. 2) She has a responsibilty as an elected official to look out for the good of a)her constituents b)the government of which she is a part and c)the country. For the love of God, tell me how her shooting her face off helps anyone. 3) She insulted the population of our biggest trading partner, strongest ally without regard to the damage it may do to relations. If we don't hold our politicians to a little higher standard in regards to onternational relations and diplomacy, we deserve the crap we get from them. I heard an unsubstantiated report from that O'Reilly schmuck. -
USA outperforming Canada
Newfie Canadian replied to CdnRepublican's topic in Canada / United States Relations
I'm not an economics expert, jobs guru or unemployment/employment aficionado. However it seems to me that despite punitive, retaliatory and, according to the WTO and NAFTA panels, unnecessary and illegal duties on Canadian lumber imposed by our biggest trading partner + the refusal to allow live Canadian cattle into the US which is costing the Canadian economy billions of dollars and, I don't think we're doing as bad as it could be. I may be incorrect, like I said, I'm not an expert. -
OK, perhaps the original ideas were from Albertans, but they have caught on. My idea of Westerners is people from provinces west of Ontario. If I counted correctly, out of the 4 western provinces the CPC has 68 seats. AB 26 BC 22 SA 13 MA 7 There is one Independent in BC who was a CPC MP. I agree with you about Campbell. From what I've seen a country away, it hasn't been a great ride.

US Citizens Are Coming, US Citizens Are Coming
Newfie Canadian replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
That's not what I said, eureka. We should not interfere in US elections, and I agree that they should not interfere either. Lowering us to that level by interfering with their free elections does not make us any better than them. They should keep their noses out of other countries business if it doesn't concern. And so should we. And if we have to be the bigger man to do it, good for us. -

And that's the rub, MS. At least part of it. It's a difference of millions and millions and milions of dollars. It would sure go a long way to helping NL and NS get on our feet. -
US Citizens Are Coming, US Citizens Are Coming
Newfie Canadian replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I disagree. The world has a vested interest surely, but I don't think we have the right to interfere with an election and then chide or berate the American electorate for making a choice that they think is in their best interest. Do we vote for who we think is going to be the best for the rest of the world? Of course not, we vote for who we think will do the best for us, and I'd be insulted if someone from another country told me I made the wrong choice for them. If that is the case, I would argue there isn't a democracy on the face of the Earth. The public never knows the whole truth about anything. And I would also argue that that is universal. Maybe, and if that is the case, some people may feel comfortable in moving, and if it is the best choice for them, so be it. -
US Citizens Are Coming, US Citizens Are Coming
Newfie Canadian replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
So, do we agree on Parrish? I can't argue that. The current incarnation of the Republic party is severely right, making our CPC look left. It's funny, one of the knocks against them (as put forth by the Liberals) in the last election was that they were too much like Bush. Oppression, BD? That seems a bit strong for what has been suggested. It's not like the Bush administration is sending out death squads and rounding up the citizenry and throwing them all in jail for no reason.. I agree with this. If they want to come to Canada because they value the Canadian way of life, they are willing to embrace what Canada stands for, and they want to try to live here and make themselves better, groovy. But if they want a surrogate home until a Democrat takes the White House or the Congress, they should stay where they are, IMHO. -
