And if Canadians run out because governments allowed foreign residents to obtain the shots over Canadians, there should be serious fallout. -
Exit Polls - Will you rely on them in the future?

US Citizens Are Coming, US Citizens Are Coming

I'll start with Parrish. She should keep her mouth in check unless or until she arrives in a position to be representing the government or people of Canada. I didn't appreciate that nut Buchannan mouthing off about Canada (Soviet Canuckistan et al), and I'm sure Americans don't appreciate her crap. It's their country, let them vote for who they want, without prejudice. As a Canadian, I could say the same for the electorate of Mississauga--Erindale returning that nut job, but I respect their right to vote for who they want. Everyone has a right to their opinion, but when you're in public office and microphones are almost always present, you have an obligation to consider the good of the country. EDIT- Martin said in a scrum Good for him.I would support anyone who wanted to come to Canada to try to legitimately better their lives, but I have some doubts and issues with people who would abandon their country because they don't like their democratically elected government. Do what everyone else does and wait to vote in the next election. If they feel that the government of the US is going where they don't want it to go and it would be the same if Kerry had won, come on up. What happens to all these people if a Democrat is elected in 2008? Do they go home? Do they stay? Wouldn't it be a hoot if they came here and a few months later we elected a Conservative government? -

No Flu Vaccine For Canadians While Campbell

That's an issue in every border province I would guess. This is a story about a possible shortage in NS, it may or may not be caused by US patients looking for the shot. http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/20.../flu041103.html I'm all for letting Americans come to get their shot if: 1) They pay for it, and 2) There are enough for Canadians. -
US Election Predictions
Newfie Canadian replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
It's very close. The sad part about it is that we may not know who won until some time in December, and remember everybody, Florida has 2 time zones. -
Harper didn't cost the Conservatives the election caesar, it was brain cramps by certain candidates apparently attacking bilingualism, the legal system and the Charter, the Hate Crimes bill and mouthing off about abortion being comparable to beheadings. After all that stupidity, Harper didn't stand a chance. They need a convention to iron out a platform so that everyone, especially certain people within their own party, know what the party is about. Still like being involved with Missle Defence.

Canadian Military Issues
Newfie Canadian replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Just getting around to it Stoker. They have had some serious problems with those subs. Some serious funds down the tube. http://www.minister.defence.gov.au/1999/collins.html Our Victoria class subs will be worth it, monetarily, if the costs assocated wih refits and repairs will not be astronomical. -
I'm looking forward to watching it. We need some good Canadian cinematic drama. I think it says that while we have an active cinematic industry, it is primarily U.S. based companies initiating it. We have little in the lines of Canadian made, for Canada, about Canada cinema, and they are never profitable enough to play in theaters. Television is the only place to do it, and the CBC has a history of showing Canadian drama. We live next to a superpower. There is always a storm on the horizon, whether it's lumber, oil, beef, philosophical and policy differences, etc.

Williams Concerned over Meeting
Newfie Canadian replied to Newfie Canadian's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
What do that have to do with anything? The main industry that I assume you're referring to, the fishery, is limited by 3 things: availability, weather and government, in the form of season setting and quotas. I think it's unfair and unnecessary to bring that into this discussion. I am a little uncertain as to Williams' position on it. I don't know if he wants no impact on equalization ever, or get equalization and the revenues until NL becomes a "have province". I would settle for the latter. The problems are: 1) The time limit the feds want to put on the agreement (the feds want to renegotiate or stop the deal at the end of the 8 years while NL wants the revenues for good) 2) If the province becomes a "have province" or reaches Ontario's level of fiscal capacity the deal ends. 3) The feds want to cap what NL can get, so that if the price of oil remains high, we wouldn't get the whole revenue total. It would be capped at a certain amount and the rest would go to Ottawa. -
Canadian Military Issues

I agree that there is enough blame to go around here, Stoker, and all the facts still aren't in. But, if I were going to sell something to a close ally that had serious problems, problems that could be disastrous, I think I'd have to mention it. Still, as you point out, our navy appears to have dropped the ball a bit too. I think the $4 billion would be worth it if the damned thing worked right. And if it didn't, we'd have ourselves to blame. No one knows what the repair and refit costs are going to balloon to before these subs become totally operational, IF they ever do. The parts and refit budget has already skyrocketed. Plus, it would create optimism and employment in an area of the economy that has really suffered in the last decade or more. Agreed. Apparently, and I may be misinformed, diesel subs are not able to patrol under the Arctic ice, but nuclear subs can. -

As a casual observers to Alberta politics, it seems to be a case of hero worship (people credit Klein for unprecedented economic prosperity) and weak opposition. I may be wrong.

Surrey Panorama Ridge BC By-Election
Newfie Canadian replied to maplesyrup's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
I was wondering about that Cartman. I mean it was just one seat. If I remember correctly B.C. is due for an election soon, so is it a sign of what's to come? Sorry, but I'm not that up on B.C. politics, and I haven't read all the posts in this thread. I know is my grandfather can't stand Campbell. (He lived in B.C. for 20+ years and still keeps up on the news there). -
He may be in trouble if he picks too much on the little guys like the disabled. I agree that abusers of the system should be punished, but he went about it all wrong. It'll just be water off a duck's back before the election, I suspect. Klein seems to have a knack for putting his foot in his mouth and people forgetting about it.

I agree with that caesar. The point I was trying to make was this: I concede the equaliztion issue. If NL becomes a have province, it should start paying into the equalization fund instead of receiving it. Until it becomes a have province, I have no problem with getting both. Ottawa wants to cap the revenues we receive so that we level off at Ontario's level. In other words, if the revenues would give us enough money to surpass Ontario's fiscal level. Why should we have to be limited? If the revenues are more (like it is now because of the price of oil) why shouldn't we get it all? -
Williams Concerned over Meeting
Newfie Canadian replied to Newfie Canadian's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
I confess that if NL achieves "have" status, equalization payments should be affected. Until then, I have no problem with having the cake and eating it too. As I understand it, the big sticking point is Ottawa capping what the province can receive. In other words, God forbid we be richer than Ontario for a few years. According to Williams, that alone would cost NL billions. -
Klein suffers from the same malady as the Federal Liberals: can't lose-itis. It would have to be a pretty monstrous SNAFU for Klein to lose any great amount of seats.

Joey has been called many things. Some of them in jest and some of them not so flattering. He called himself a Liberal and the Liberal party occassionally invokes his name still. -

It was a Liberal government that gave away Churchill Falls. The day after this happened Grimes said he was behind the government. I don't know what changed. The minority situation certainly makes it interesting. -
A few months ago I might have agreed with you caesar, but I have seen very little during the campaign to show that.

I'm guessing you're not from Alberta eureka Because we've gotten so much in the ability and resources to become self sufficient. Where would it have raised hackles? NS, PEI and Alberta have already signaled agreement with Williams. I'm sure BC wouldn't mind a similar deal for future off shore sevelopment there, same for the Territories. The Prairie provinces would have control over their resources anyway as they are landlocked and land resources fall under provincial jurisdiction anyway. That leaves Ontario, Quebec and NB. What's their beef? I would submit that no province is. Through equalization payments Alberta gives up some of it's revenue, as does Ontario. If Paul Martin said we should get %100 of provincial revenues when the price of oil was $26-$28/barrel, it should be the same now that the price is $55/barrel. I find this last point ironic in that only a few days before alll of this blew up, the Natural Resourcers minister said they wouldn't tamper with the price of oil because it wouldn't be fair to Alberta, who lost money or got very little when the price of oil was low. Efford said: Apparently not in his home province.
