Well Argus; Chretien kept us out of the invasion of Iraq and the mess there. For that I am very grateful.. Paul Martin has paid down our deficit. Harper has a "clean" record" He has no record to speak of. He did want to have Canada join the USA and support the invasion of Iraq; That says enough for me. And Why did he want us supporting the Americans; because they were right? NO The invasion was necessary?? NO. Because "they are our friends" Well Bush has shown himself to be no friend of Canada. His ingratitude to Canadians after 9/11 was an early indication. If my friends are foolish enough to drive drunk; I do not have to do the same.

Hello everyone, I'm new to this board.

Big Blue; you have many more things to learn. Ontario as part of Canada is bilingual and that is not a provincial choice. You are only 16; lots of time to learn French language. If you want to be Premier of Ontario; you should know French language. It is not a requirement to speak French to be Prime Minister; but as Quebec is one of our larger provinces with many votes; it is a good idea if you want votes from French Canadians. However, you are very young and I applaud you for your interest. Keep learning and encourage other to learn more about our government systems. I am aware that a large proportion of Canadians understand very little about our government systems. Parties are not that clearly defined. The Liberals here in BC (provincial) are extreme right wing and are much like Harper Tories. I like governments a little more centered in the middle. I am not thrilled with any. I do admire Trudeau and his straightforward honesty. He believed in a strong central government. -
Conservatives McGuintied by Klein
caesar replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
If Klein has some good ideas to help save our health care system and cut down the ridiculous waiting times; He should speak up and share it; not hint about trying some new system 2 days after the election. That sounds like a childish act. If he has ideas; share them with his own constituents; get some feed back from the people. This is supposed to be democratic countries. ALL YEAR not just for election day. -
Is it unpatroitic to critize the US?
caesar replied to idealisttotheend's topic in Canada / United States Relations
Truth,Until the USA comes under more rational leadership we shoulld back off. Even with more rational leadership; we should take care with any long term cooperation and make sure Canada does not get the short end of the stick again. Bush may not be the last egomaniac that is voted in as President in the USA. We may even vote one in here in Canada. -

Well, as he is a premier and not supposed to be a dictator; shouldn't the people of Alberta be advised on what his plans are so that they can have some input. Democracy means that the people have the last say in government. We should not be only democratic on election day. A note of interest; We have 2 extreme right wing Premiers out west. One Liberal, one Conservative; both have had problems with alcohol. Does Harper like the bottle too?????? Just a question. -
Martin vs. Harper - Good vs. Evil

By the way Playful; claims that Saddam gassed his own people is NOT a proven fact. In fact, according to the USA War College; the Kurds were likely gassed by accident as both the Iranians and the Iraqi military were using gas on each other. The Kurds just came in between. PLUS; according to their experts the gas poisoning they were showing symptoms of were indicative of the gas being used bu Iran. Of course, we must remember that at that time; Saddam was a close ally of the USA in their dispute with Iran; perhaps it IS just more American changing propaganda?????? The USA War College is the same one that Bush recently gave his speech from!!!!!!! What other untruths are we being told??? Personally, I didn't like Saddam but my feelings are not a good enough reason for killing thousands of Iraqis and destroying the infrastructure in their country. -

Cities and Provinces are part of the country. What affects provinces Actually though this is widespread and common practice. As BC seems to get the short end of the stick when it comes to federal help; I could quite agree. Why did our federal money go to Ontario for mishandling SARS. Why are we bailing out meat producers in Alberta for losses due to BSE. (Actually, I would have liked to have seen the family farmers and ranchers assisted; but seeminly most of the money went to big producers (not even to their layed off employees)Health care is a national issue and should be returned to the control and administration of our federal government. Welfare should be a federal issue. No more bus tickets to other provinces. Actually building roads in the prairies provinces is much cheaper that building in mountainous BC; so would Saskatchewan get their fair share. I do think there are lots of changes that could be made to inter governmental responsibilities but that can be a lot of interlapping responsibilities. -
I agree 100 % with not giving prisoners vote. Welfare is another matter. There are people who are on welfare because of legitimate reasons; health problems. If we deny people voting rights because they are on welfare; would low income people (generally young or seniors) be next. I do understand where you are coming from as I do often get irritated by welfare groups demanding more of everything.

Is it unpatroitic to critize the US?
caesar replied to idealisttotheend's topic in Canada / United States Relations
The wheels of justice roll slowly. The world and the UN have stood back and allowed a bully to try to control the world. The same thing happened with Hitler until that situation just went too far. Of course Bush has bought and paid for support from many weak greedy countries. He has supplied unstable countries with arms; Pakistan is now considered a preferred ally (I forget the correct term) and can now buy modern top of the line weapons from the USA. This came just weeks after Pakistan's top scientist were discovered to have been selling nuclear technologies and parts to rogue nations. It was even after Pakistan completely pardoned these scientists and allowed them to keep their ill gotten gains. Ghadafi went from one of the top most wanted to American ally within days?????????? A leopard don't change its spots and such a drastic switch should be phased in after a longer prooof period. -

It is a party's right to run ads that they must pay for; within the guidelines. Harper likes to take CHEAP shots at the Liberals and NDP in unpaid interviews The original Conservatives under a moderate leader such as Joe Clark may have got my vote but not this extreme right wing mouthy character. He will be an embarrassment to Canadians. He makes wild statements and then denies he even made them. The most ridiculous one being that he supported Chretien's decision not to send Canadian troops into Iraq. Does he think most Canadians are deaf., dumb, and blind. I do know that there are many that are. I read them on this site. -
Cons accuse NDP/Lib of Child Pornography
caesar replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
That my dear fellow is what all the nonsense is about. Not that the Liberals or NDP support child pornography just that they did not support a conservative bill that could add innocent people being charged for innocent pictures. The Liberals were almost ready to present a better thought out bill of their own. Harper is a fool to keep trying to make a mountain out of a molehill. He is completely out of line. There is absolutely nothing wrong with pictures of children in innocent play in the nude. It is quite natural and innocent. Only very sick minds can turn that into something other than natural child play on a warm day. -

By your reason playful; the world shouldn't have interfered with Hitler when he started invading countries/ The USA is wrong; this is not a CBC opinion. I have done serious reseach; to bad he USA didn't. Anyone who stil cannot see that the USA made grave error when it invaded Iraq on its proven (prior to the invasion) fraudulent information. There is now a group of 24 former (Reagan and Bush sr) diplomats and ambassador's from the USA asking people to vote Bush OUT of office because of the damage Bush has done to the USA's reputation with its ill advised invasion of Iraq and the holding of prisoners in quatanama without their geneva convention rights plus the widespread torture and killings of prisoners in Iraq and quatanama. Bush was warned by Former Intelligence agents for Sanity (24 former CIA and FBI intelligence agents) PRIOR to the invasion; that the intelligence that Bush and Co were using was seriously flawed. -

Just what is all the resistance to gun registry. Any sensible gun owner who owns a gun for legitimate reasons has nothing to fear from registering his guns. I suspect it is this resistance to comply with the laws that has driven up the costs. -
Cons accuse NDP/Lib of Child Pornography
caesar replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Good post Argus. It was a silly attack to turn it into anyone supporting or even tolerant of child pornograpy. I wish they would all stay on the real issues where there are genuine differences. I would like to see a strong central government. We need a stabilizing force and a strong joint government approach to issues like foreign trade, education, and health care and inter-provincial infrastructure. I would like to see a better military but one that concentrates on homeland defense not transport planes to take our soldiers to foreign lands. We need military that would be readily available and trained to help out during natural disasters. We have a large coastline that needs to be patrolled regularly and would be available to help in sea rescues. -

You are quite a mixed up boy with your liberal heroes and yet supporting these tories who will destroy everything those leaders did for Canada. Good thing you won't vote until you become a little more knowledgeable. Everyone likes lower taxes but sometimes it is not the right thing to do. We must pay down the national debt. It is not fair to pass that down to you and your children. Health care will deteriorate under the conservative government and its approval of private health care, Keep your eyes and ears open and you will learn. The last conservative government; which was more moderate than Harper's views left us 450 billion dollars in debt; it gave us the gst and it relinguished Canadian control of our own resources. It made a bad deal for us with the USA in "Free Trade" -

Well Argus, not everything revolves around you? The federal government does not just spend money to please YOU. You may not like the federal government contributing to the cost of infrastructure but you would have us spending our federal money and risking our soldiers lives backing up the USA on a ill thought out; unjust; invasion of a country that was disarming( in fact it had been VERY successfully disarmed) for UN weapons inspectors. Did you not even get a clue when this all began and Bush and co started producing FRAUDULENT evidence; 10 year old plagairized student paper as evidence. Did you not realize that the job in Afghanistan was not finished????????? Bush and co made a BIG mistake invading Iraq; anyone with half a brain could see that PRIOR to the invasion. Read and listen to something other than your right wing nonsense. The USA is not the great wonderful perfect nation that you believe. They make poor choices at election time on occasion. (the last election was just such an occasion); I pray that Canadians do not make the same kind of dumb mistake. Do not allow Harper to destroy everything that is a source of pride to most true Canadians. -

Oh, the Americans were handing out long term contracts from day one. Things have just not gone as smoothly as they thought. They said all the Iraqis would be greeting them with open arms as they sat on the big pile of WMD that Saddam had. That life in Iraq would be great; not quite how reality turned out. -
Martin vs. Harper - Good vs. Evil
caesar replied to jacqueline944's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Canada was right in not supporting the invasion of Iraq ON ANY LEVEL. It was the wrong time and was completely unjustified. It was based on fraudulent information and down right lies that were revealed PRIOR to the invasion. Canada can make its own decisions; regardless of what other countries agree or disagree. The American people are now agreeing with our original opinion and decision. Would those who believe we should have supported the American decision to invade a disarming country also want us to support the illegal imprisonment against Geneva convention of prisoner being held by the American in Cuba? Would you have Canadians support the torture of prisoners in Iraq. These cases of torture and murder are not being commited by individuals; it is too widespread. These soldiers being prosecuted are scapegoats to take the heat off the USA administration. Do you really believe that the invasion of Iraq has made North America safer from terrorist attacks. It has not. It will probably make such attacks more common. -

caesar replied to jacqueline944's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I am not a LIBERAL but it has been plain to see that Harper, Campbell, and Bush qall have many similar outlooks. Harper had the nerve to go to the USA and apologize for Canadians not joining the USA in the unwise invasion (It was not a war) of Iraq. He claimed Canadians were wrong. CANADIANS WERE NOT WRONG; Harper and Bush were wrong. Even the Americans are now seeing the truth and realizing that old Georgie lead them down the wrong path. That Bush lied, used poor information and ignored the warning from other countries and their own experts. The invasion of Iraq; besides being uncalled for; took the pressure off seeking out and containing the REAL terrorists. They may have captured Saddam ( a irritatating jerk and vile dicatator; but no ties to terrorists nor WMD) The real leader of the terrorists (by American claim) was Osama bin Laden; he is still free to lead and rebuild his terrorist organizations. The attack on Iraq while it was still cooperating with the UN weapons inspectors only served to inflame Muslims and Arabian people. This action and the subsequent mistreatment of prisoners has only succeeded in making more young Muslims decide to join the terrorist groups against this unfair attack of their people. -
Yes, we should all do our part in reducing pollutants and helping to save our environment. Many people are willing and ready to do this. The big polluters are not individuals but are the large smelters, factories, and other companies that are more interested in the bottom line. government rules are needed to bring them into line. Without government guidelines we would still not have many of the less polluting vehicles to drive. Yes, I have heard that Harper does not believe co2 to be a pollutant.

Is Canada too dependant on the US?
caesar replied to CanadianPatriot's topic in Canada / United States Relations
Right ideal. I think we should look for a more diverse range of trading partners. We must not allow the USA to control our economy. If the USA will not trade fairly and deal fairly with NAFTA decisions; we should opt out of Nafta until we get some guarantees of fair play. -
NDP Socialists Spreading Hated
caesar replied to Alliance Fanatic's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
It would depend on the context it was written in. Government officials do have a responsibility to answer for the actions of government employees and to ensure abuses are dealt with. We are going backwards if we do not discuss problems because someone may interpret it as being racist. That is why I do not agree with hate laws. We should all be protected equally from crimes of hate. With special hate crime laws; we are hindered from talking freely about those members of the protected group that are committing abuses. If we try to put forward legitimate concerns about the actions of the Israeli government; many label us racist. Like in all groups there are good bad etc. It is the same when we criticize the actions of the American government; those who support the USA actions throw out the "anti American" label to attack our concerns. There is a difference between people and governments. Even though the people may support their governments. I do realize many are too trusting of their governments and believe the propaganda they are fed.
