I think so. And the "arrogant" Americans were correct about WWI too, it didn't last long once they got on the scene. The Canadian response could have been a reference to the Roosevelt's famous Rough Riders charge of San Juan Hill in the Spanish-American War in Cuba in 1898. This would still have been a remarkable and mythological event that were in people's minds enough to reference it. Calvary was still being used early in WWI, but not much by the time the Americans entered the war. I suppose that is all relative. But my understanding was that the US was quite a powerful nation at the time of WWI and had been steadily building their economic and military base post Civil War. No, it was considered cowardice or some other lacking. I have read quite a few Canadian Expeditionary Forces medical files back in the day and they didn't tolerate battle fatigue much. Combat stress reaction That would be about right. Heck, many of them still have that complex.

Which has absolutely nothing to do with anything. There is no partisanship here, I just countered your bullshit bigotry with the facts. All you can retort with is some whiney speculation about what I may or may not do in some make-believe scenario you concocted to try and soothe your sore feelings for being outed. So you are still full of shit.

And why is that? Why did they bail out GM and make such a terrible, horrifying deal to do so? -36% when - today? The government bailed out General Motors "plain and simple" and saved a huge contributor - via their products & workforce - to the economy. Furthermore the "bailout" was paid back by the funds used to purchase majority equity in the company - just like any other company would. Deal with reality instead of ignoring the truth.

Your "logic" includes fantastical imaginings about absurd bullshit? Come off it August - shit or get off the pot. We are talking about a national service to Canadians that has economic benefits - proven economic benefits and all you got is some vague reference to your taxes? Good God, what are you? Like 12 or something?

GM posts fourth-quarter, full-year profits Not to mention that this equity can be - and will be - sold. And making a multi-billion dollar profit helps that sale doesn't it? Do you honestly think the Canadian and US governments are going to sell and below-market-price for their stake in GM? Once all the "shifting around" is done and all? Secondary to all of this - supposing that the governments DID - in the end - pay for all those employee benefits and pensions and such. Where does all that money go - do you know?

Fantasy. The report says that the CBC provides an economic benefit right now. Today and in the past . It doesn't rely on day dreaming or wishful thinking about what could be with those mytical tax dollars, it is justifying itself as a positive economic factor in the present. As one of those fiscal conservative types, this is what I like to hear. Show me the money so we can at least see that our collective investment has some tangible economic value in the field. As for Canadian culture being subsidized, so? At least the money is being circulated here at home, resulting in economic benefit to Canadian production. Gawd, I bet you blow out your spleen over the National Film Board, eh?

LOL Well, after all, those cigarette ads back in the day made everything out to be pretty cool if you smoked. I mean, how could one lose?

Vive le Québec ! Vive le Québec Libre !
Shwa replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Separatism as a media driver. Makes for good news bites. Although if Federalism is all the Quebec youth can rebel about they are more trouble than they think. -
Great catch! And, because of it's author, legitimized.

Air Freshener And Fast Food Wrappers
Shwa replied to AngusThermopyle's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
This is profiling fast food eaters. I smell a Charter challenge. Really, all the cops need to do is ask the following question to detect, well, marijuana at least: "Sir, have you ever wondered what it is and when you found out that it wasn't did you think that it wasn't it after all or was there a persistent feeling you were missing out? Or would you like some chips?" If they answer that they would like some chips, bust them right away. Mind you, clever marijuana users might try to answer the first question. In which case they will go on long enough trying to explain that the tell-tale dry mouth will kick in resulting in visible bits of foam appearing at the corner of their mouths. Bust them too! -
Another reason to be proud of Canadians
Shwa replied to Tilter's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
What kills me though - and we can blame these people too - is that they had all these outdoor televisions located in the prime city real estate. What were they thinking?!?! What they should have done is had the gatherings in the low end parts of town where the destruction could have led to urban improvement. They could have had it in skid row and some of the addicts could have policed it themselves. For a small user fee extracted directly from the rioters. Opportunity squandered. Damned city staff! -
Another reason to be proud of Canadians

Rioting in such a polite society that is Canada, well, that will knock us down a peg or two in the world love or happiness rankings. Damned hockey. Where were those BC hippies when you needed them and their damned peacefulness? Of course the blame falls squarely on the shoulders of the NHL and their outrageous championship in June for a winter sport. I wonder how many Vancouverites would be rioting if it were 5 degrees and rainy. At least the fires wouldn't have burned long. Probably would have been easy to catch them too. Damned NHL. Only Montrealers riot over hockey in the winter and I think they have the patent on that. Winnipeg will be allowed to riot when they win/lose their first Stanley Cup because they will have to contend with the mosquitoes. They might get like 8 rioters. Should be a small bonfire. Damned mosquitoes! -
From the Ottawa Citizen Controversial American academic barred from Canada for third time Interesting that the focus of this article shifts from Mr. Ayers lack of success in getting into Canada to the content of the conference he is supposed to attend. And really, why should we welcome former terrorists? We have enough of our own.

Absolutely. I mean, look what that gruff right-winger Don Cherry does for them.

No, the Canadian computer will cost $550.00. How do I know this? Because I can make shit up too. Seriously, "the $5,000.00 Canadian made computers?" LOFL! Let's review: hyperbole (hy·per·bo·le) extravagant exaggeration.

Companies reporting on their benefit to society is as old as commerce itself. Are you surprised that the CBC can do the same thing? Seriously, how about major oil companies putting on glossy media campaigns about their benefits to the environment? Sure. But there is also an economic factor as well as they have pointed out. The problem with the economic factor is that it nicely counters the blase argument the CBC is all about spending 'our tax money' and government shouldn't be funding culture; or that it is a waste of tax payers money because of the 'obvious leftist bias' and on and on. But even IF you can count a single interation of the economic benefits of the CBC - is is still an economic benefit. That the money it receives and spends, helps stimulate the economy. If you have a problem with the iterations then it becomes incumbent on you to read the report and be specific about your criticism. You have failed to do so and can only address their specific argument in a general, philosophical way. Cable and satellite could likely do this with a connection oriented protocol, but I am not sure if the capability exists for this in broadcast over-the-air AM/FM radio. Why would this matter when you have already stated that the, "...benefit of the CBC/Radio-Canada is the pleasure/enlightenment it offers to listeners/viewers." Seems you are contradicting yourself. If Michael Enright offers pleasure/enlightenment to his listeners/viewers, then all should be as right as rain.

One thing that has piqued my interest, especially with two strikes and the threat of two pieces of back-to-work legislation in response is that I think Prime Minister Harper is playing with the tempest in the tea pot. He may regret playing the legislative card in the long run. Collective bargaining is a right, not a privilege to be bestowed in good times and when everyone is OK with it. All contracts were legally negotiated and agreed upon, but now a sudden change in the rules. Why so? The biggest tempest however, is organized labour itself and it can quickly spread from one small job action here and there, to an organized general strike across the country. Or... could it? Back in the day, when labour had some clout, there was all sorts of cooperation between unions and labour councils, but nary a peep these days. However, with the 'labour' party sitting in Official Opposition, there is a focal point for unions to rally around. And not just 'unions,' but 'workers' everywhere.

Interesting story from the Star ‘Ribald poetry and dirty pictures’ drove technological advances I find this hard to believe, but can understand how erotica might have had a place within the early printing press. If porn was such a driver though, then why the Bible as the first printed book? From McLuhan's research in 'The Gutenberg Galaxy' the most popular early printed books were academic texts since back in the day those large volumes had to be copied by hand. Ironically, with the printing press, this would have freed up hands to be doing other stuff... I think liberalization took off with the printing press, but was it because of the naughty bits?

And everything she is saying is no secret to anyone really. This is how parties function right now and have for a long time, anyone who pays attention knows it. It's business as usual in Ottawa. It is a problem with our democracy, and our system perpetuates this party discipline and cronyism/patronage . There's no reason why we shouldn't have more free votes on issues that aren't matters of confidence. So what - the squeeky wheel gets the grease is how we determine how an entire constituency would want to vote. From some calls and emails? Unless she has 20 people in her riding, I find such reasons for feeling "immense pressure" to be a titch specious. Hey, I am all for free votes, but let's not duck behind bullshit to justify one's personal preference on an issue.

$127 Million cut from reservation housing
Shwa replied to cybercoma's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Do they pay taxes on that profit? Did they pay taxes on that profit 300 years ago? Because, you know, Shady's Law says that "Nobody's stopping them from living like they did 300 years ago." Under Shady's Law - the very assertion that you raised - not paying taxes, etc., should not be a problem now should it? And they should be able to pack up and pick any old piece of land they want to farm or manufacture goods on or trade with whomever they wanted to or do whatever else they wanted to do, like they did 300 years ago. Right Shady?
