Hands up, how many of you who hate the gun registry live in a city like Toronto or Vancouver?
-
First of all, the knives would be out if they were calling for Iggy's job. Not happening. Nice spin. Secondly, I guarantee you this Liberal source was probably the assistant of the dude who isn't getting the nomination. As for the high ranking Liberal pissed that nothing has been put out yet, I can understand the frustration, I'm frustrated too. However, the fact is that if Ignatieff puts out the party's platform tomorrow, it gets hammered by the Conservatives in commercials and in the House until the day of the vote. It doesn't look good now but this goes back to something I've posted MANY MANY MANY times before. Pre-writ polls DON'T matter. The platform will come out when it needs to and people will judge the party for what it stands for then, not what it doesn't now.

It was Martin who resisted deregulating when Harper and his neocon minions wanted to follow the US example on subprime. n\t Also, someone mentioned that why is it that our recession wasn't as deep as the States and our recovery is ahead of the states? A) Thank Paul Martin for the first B ) According to the economist of all G7 nations Canada is poised to have the worst "recovery" numbers. In the Economist they cite OECD numbers predicting a 2.5% contraction in GDP. Thanks for getting that money out so quickly, Stevie!

NDP support for Tories sign of broader strategy
nicky10013 replied to jdobbin's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
So what if it was a Liberal law that was passed years ago. The fact is it was wrong and deserves to be fixed. You can't just say well it was a LIBERAL who did it therefore it can't be fixed by a Liberal. If you haven't noticed, things have kind of changed since then. As for the rest of your post, wading through the grammatical land mine you laid down was difficult enough only to find out that there really wasn't any argument behind it anyway, just baseless accusations against Liberals. As for "fighting for other things," you must be crazy to think Harper is going to give them to you. He waited for this exact opportunity. If the NDP starts to demand more Harper is just going to claim he's already compromised enough. He wants an election, too. This will give him the perfect opportunity to pull the plug because god knows he's always itching to go after the Liberals. As for me, I didn't think the NDP would be stupid enough to step into that trap. Oh wait, nevermind, I just thought of the party's platform. Makes perfect sense right now. As for the shame part, you wouldn't happen to be a member of the University of Toronto Student Union, would you? -
NDP support for Tories sign of broader strategy

Link on the new poll? As for mine, notice the fact that about 9% of voters are still undecided. Declaring any one party a victor or a loser before the writ has even been dropped is extremely stupid. As for the rest of your post, yes, what Canadians are getting right now are crumbs. The conservatives didn't want to compromise, thye would show up to these meetings and sabotage them. Mind you, it was really bad optics for the Liberals to walk out on these talks, but they were never going anywhere anyways. The Conservatives with the help of Jack Layton basically got their narrow minded and unfair version of an EI bill that won't help people now. I was helping out at a constit office and got a call from a woman who worked 800 hours and couldn't qualify for EI because she needed close to 1000 due to being an Ontarian. Why should someone in the maritimes qualify after 400? Maybe that's a question you should ask happy Jack at your next convention. -
NDP support for Tories sign of broader strategy

Yep. I support the Liberals. It seems Iggy is being a little two fisted on the HST. Not so hard for me to admit. Why is it so hard for others? I'll never understand....of course, this is all a false Liberal talking point. Just like EI isn't a talking point for the dippers. Yikes. -

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Another great post, this time from the left. This was enough motivation for Jack. * Conservative 37.5% (+6.2) * Liberal 33.4% (-0.4] * NDP 14.8% (-3.9) * BQ 9.7% (+0.5) * Green 4.6% (-2.4) * Undecided 24.6% (+8.9) Honestly, you may be right though. Jack Layton may not be as motivated by polls as other parties are simply due to the fact that the NDP will never win government until there's a massive reorganisation of party ideology. He can stand on principle whenever he wants. Problem is this EI bill wasn't standing on principle. It was a watered down piece of garbage. There was a reason why the Liberals walked out of the talks, despite what Pierre Poilievre has to say. Saying they did it "to support EI reform" is just saving face at best. -
NDP support for Tories sign of broader strategy

If that was the way it actually was we'd be in the first weekend of a campaign right now. Happy Jack is as opportunist as they come. He's obviously seen the internals and hasn't liked what he's seen. People seem to forget that the NDP brought in 19% of the vote in last year's election. Saying that they're hovering around 14% right now and won't lose any seats is kind of ridiculous, no? -
NDP support for Tories sign of broader strategy
nicky10013 replied to jdobbin's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Of course its hypocrisy. Anyone who thinks that their leader isn't hypocritical in some way is just ridiculous. As for all this pride in supporting the government, it's just saving face over the fact that its seeming more and more likely that this election is going to see a drop in support for the NDP as people vote strategically to potentially oust Harper. Layton is in a catch 22. Support the government and upset your base even further, or support the opposition and go into an election where you'll probably lose seats. Though clealy I'm biased, I would say that him not forcing an election right now might lead to worse results in the future. Force it now and get the distasteful results out of the way. -
Conservatives Make a Prize Recruit
nicky10013 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!!! Are you serious about this? No, really. You didn't chuckle a bit when typing this out? Honestly, I was going to say that if you're serious you should just give up and throw your computer out but this is too funny for you not to stop. Please, what else do you have in your magical bag of conservative hypocrisy? I love to laugh! -

That made absolutely no sense. In English please?

It isn't something solid to run on and the Cons know that which is why they're turning to the coalition bogeyman. A ways and means motion can be reintroduced anytime after an election and the credit would pass with tons of time to spare come the april tax season. The real question that needs to be asked is despite how long the credit has been public, why haven't the Conservatives already introduced the motion? The reason is they held off until something like this happened. It's not something to run on but it's a bat with which you can beat the opposition for a day or two and gain some traction. Again, it's been more about politics than just getting things through.

No, income trusts were worse. In the end, the Liberals kept it the same as it was before. In this case, it was a new tax and a lot of people lost a lot of money.

For this first part, there are multiple debates going on in terms of citizenship. As of right now, though, citizenship is what it is. Every person who holds a Canadian passport has the rights entailed to them as such. Those questions will only be answered if you change the definition of citizenship which I'm not sure is fair but that's my opinion. As for repatriating people to be tried in Canada, for the most part I agree with what you say. If they do something in the states, they should be tried in the states unless it's a death penalty case in which I believe the Canadian government should ask for clemency (no person should be subjected to the death penalty and this has always been a Canadian stance until Harper came into power). Khadr's case is differen't though. First, Khadr isn't being held as a prisoner of war but a criminal and second, he hasn't been afforded due process which is granted to all other Americans and very likely has been subject to cruel and unusual punishment. If someone is being mistreated, be it in Iran or the United States, I should hope that its the government's duty to attempt to right injustices being meted out against Canadians despte the circumstances. As for charging the family of recruiting the kid to fight, I think it should be prosecuted if it indeed is the case. Canada is a signatory to the UN treaties and the Geneva convention ban it from occuring. If they can prove this, then yes, they should be subject to prosecution. I should imagine it would prove a very difficult case to prove, however.

Liberals release more ads aimed at voters
nicky10013 replied to jdobbin's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Same here. Though, I have to admit, I haven't watched much TV recently. That, and I live in Toronto. I would think it would be a smart use of money not to target a city you're going to carry anyways. -
In your opinion thats what a country is. The legal definition of a country is a state with boundaries and a monopoly on violence with a government and an apparatus that provides services to its people.
-
I think you're wrong to say that I called you all dupes. I said some people are which you even agree with. I guess you're a "closet fascist," too. I think there's a considerable difference. I never said I don't have respect for people's arguments. I do. However, I do think some ideas are stupid. Debate on this is what makes a democracy a democracy. How do you think it works? "Oh, you have a different opinion?! Super!" I agree that civility is missing from a lot of debate, but when people don't listen to reason and stick to talking points, then how can it be civilized in the first place? As for the money argument, I never said advertising makes people do things they don't like. It's all a matter of visibility. The more visible your party is the more likely it is to get votes and the more money you've got the more visible your party is. It's the same for selling any type of consumer products. The ones that get the best advertising usually move the most product. It's not brainwashing, it's just marketing and it isn't undemocratic. I'd also REALLY like to know what you think a fascist is. Educate me. Until then no, I won't have respect for your argument because frankly when labelling people things like fascist I don't think you have any idea what you're talking about, which to me is an equal part of having any civilized discussion as well.
-
I couldn't agree more. Pragmatism is always your best bet. In the end, there isn't much difference between the old PCs and Liberals which is why I wouldn't have hesitated to vote PC. All these suckers thinking that they're getting the PCs while voting for Harper are so ridiculously wrong. Until the PCs come back I'll be voting Liberal.
-
Precisely, on boards like these or even the globe and mail boards you'll see people calling the current batch of liberals liers and thieves when the people in the party now realistically had nothing to do with it either by not being elected officials close to the party or being considered back benchers and not worthy of such information. It's definitely had a lasting effect and this Harper crap only helps....thus far. I think that secret tape could hurt a lot more than people think. People were afraid of the Alliance for exactly the fears of hidden agenda politics. Harper has been squeaky clean since he was elected and this video could bring that fear of the reform storming back. Or not. I'd like to see the polls in a week. Should be an interesting campaign.
-
If this was true they'd be voting Conservative to thank them for citizenship over the past 4 years. It isn't happening. Maybe it's because they were tired of right wing ideologues back in their home country? Just a thought.

There's a difference between the leadership and federal elections. In leadership convention it's all about pleasing the base. In the Conservatives case, moving to the right. Belinda Stronach is about as red a Tory as they came, which explains not only why she didn't win but went to the Liberals DESPITE her money. As for her own personal cash, I'm not sure exactly what it says about using personal money for campaigns, but her dad (who has the real money in the family [she was my MP, actually!]) could've only donated a grand anyways. Goes against election rules. In terms of money in federal elections, it makes all the difference. These days, its less about many hands you can shake and more about how many ads you can get on the radio and TV. It's as simple as that. Whoever can put out more convincing ads, the better chance they have. Is it any shock that the last election brought the worst Liberal results together with their worst fund raising efforts? As for being a fascist, that's the most ridiculous god damned thing I've ever heard. Debate between ideologies is what makes democracies great. Not everyone should conform. Do I think people are dupes? Sure, I think some people are dupes, but in the end they're entitled to believe what they do no matter how stupid it is. My opinion is, (one which I'm entitled to under our democratic constitution, mind you) that perhaps you shouldn't embarass yourself by calling people things you clearly have no understanding of.
-
No prob bob. As long as we keep it civil and no one gets called a fascist we can have fun and debate issues. Oh, wait....
-
You should really go to school and learn something about politics. I did, it was great! No one claims democracy to be perfect (well, maybe some Americans). It's the best we have right now. Dictators is an individual in which all legislative, judicial and political power lie and whom can't be overthrown through nominal political means. Someone has to have power in any given political system. Our power is vested among elected officials and we have the ability to kick them out. I recommend U of T. Great school.
