  1. If we were really interested in our own self-interests, we wouldn't let our economy and jobs become so dependent on a single, volatile commodity. A petro-republic is just a banana republic with a higher price tag. Long term, countries like Saudi Arabia and Russia are in for a nightmare when petroleum age comes to an end.
  2. Then I guess you were way off topic when you said this: It's OK - just don't let it happen again.
  3. Let's allow Justin a chance to do something before we rush to judgement. And it might take a while for laws to settle out. A couple of generations ago, alcohol regulations were insanely restrictive but they were still better than prohibition.
  4. Pay attention to what I say, not just what you'd like me to have said. I prefer the model where cannabis is controlled and taxed, much like alcohol. There have been health risks associated with cannabis (particularly relating to developing brains) and the science is incomplete. However, there is more than enough history with this substance that adults should be able to make up their own minds. There is also plenty of good evidence that illegal pot is easier for underage people to acquire than legal alcohol. The hysteria over legalization of cannabis (mostly from a segment of the population that normally votes Conservative) is unwarranted. Substances that are considered "safe" like aspirin are not 100% safe so it's unreasonable for people to demand marijuana be outlawed due to low probability risks. Curiously, people who are stoned tend to overestimate their level of impairment. In contrast, people who've had a few drinks judge themselves fine to drive when they're not. Having said that, I agree that it's best not to drive while high. I'm looking forward to self driving cars and rolling parties.
  5. Yeah, let's save that line for people who believe in looking at actual evidence. And unlike aspirin, nobody has ever died from marijuana poisoning. You really want to compare health effects of alcohol, tobacco and marijuana? While not recommended, marijuana and driving cannot be compared to alcohol and driving. First, marijuana has less overall impact on motor skills. Second (and more importantly), while alcohol impairs your judgement, it also makes you much more likely to be aggressive and take risks. Marijuana has the opposite effect and tends to make drivers more cautious.
  6. No but it did reference the report that was bought and paid for by the oil company. Both reports say that dilbit will sink when sediment in the water sticks to it. Enbridge had to dredge the Kalamazoo River. In a larger body of water, there is simply no way to clean up the spill. The sediment can sometimes become dislodged causing the tarballs to refloat at a later date. Thank you for your concern about my comprehension. Your post said (in part) the following: And that's what I responded to.
  7. Not a huge surprise that this bunch is hanging around after the party's over. No doubt they'll be jimmying the liquor cabinet and will pass out in the garage.
  8. Ammon Bundy says party's over boys. The beer is gone, someone ate all the chips and the dip got spilled on the couch. Time to go home.
  9. Depending on where you live, over the air reception can provide good service for a one time setup cost. There is a website called TV Fool that will assess what stations you can (theoretically) pick up with what sort of antenna. You need to account for local variations though. Tall buildings, local hills or even trees between you and the transmitter can affect your actual results. If you try it, let me know how it works.
  10. The easiest and cheapest solution is to stop watching sports. You'll be amazed how much free time you have and later look back and realize how little it added to your existence. Good luck.
  11. No. All of this will be a non-issue when we finally move on and leave fossil fuels behind as an unfortunate chapter of human history. That will happen, it's just a question of when. There is a lot of money to be made so there are powerful people expending a lot of effort to ensure that it takes as long as possible.
  12. The Trans Mountain studies were bought and paid for by the oil company. They showed that dilbit can be cleaned up - providing the waters are clear of sediment and the weather is calm. The Environment Canada study was in the same time period (well after the Kalamazoo River spill) and says roughly the same. As the Enbridge oil spill, well, are you really contending that Enbridge dumped dilbit into the Kalamzoo River so that it could study the effects of dilbit dumped into a waterway?
  13. Conservatism and liberalism have had so many different meanings over the decades that they've largely become brand names. You can stuff whatever set of policies you want into them and people will forget (or just be completely unaware of) what they used to mean.
  14. OK. So, let's stop trying to build a country on scraping tar out of Northeastern Alberta and move on. We're better than that.
  15. Elizabeth May is currently being interviewed on CBC regarding the provisional measures that the Liberal government is making to the pipeline approval process. She is pointing out that it was Harper's Conservatives that wrecked the previous process by putting the NEB in charge of environmental assessment (bill C-38). The results of the Trans Mountain assessment showed the NEB to be terminally biased when it came to environmental questioning. They ruled, for example that upstream and downstream environmental impacts would not be considered but that upstream and downstream economic impacts would be. So, if the people who are getting all torn up over the fact that pipelines aren't being built want to blame someone, they can go (try to) find Harper.
  16. Higher taxes. Guaranteed minimum income. LOL. Harper's head would be rotating if he saw what's being discussed in the way of policies for his Conservative party. LMAO.
  17. You can't suck and blow. If the Cons want to claim that the Liberals are or aren't saying something, then they need to pay attention.
  18. If you go back and look at historical tax rates (these are for US, I can't find others but they're probably representative), you will find that not only is 60% fairly low for a maximum marginal tax rate, but that during the years of maximum growth (the 50s and 60s) the marginal tax rates were highest. This should immediately dismiss the myth that higher taxes somehow impair economic activity.
  19. It looks to me like some of these boys have no shortage of snacks...
  20. When you're addicted to something everyone who gets in your way is the enemy.
  21. So, a guy who claims to be a retired green beret colonel is arrested for DUI while traveling to to Oregon to "help with killing federal agents". He was carrying a pellet gun. I got nuthin.
  22. As I understand it, it is unusual for someone to be charged with attempted murder when the victim dies (ie either it's murder or it's not). But here (again, this is my understanding) is the logic. Forcillo was charged with attempted murder, second degree murder and manslaughter. If the jury didn't accept that he was justified in shooting at all, they could have returned guilty on manslaughter or second degree murder. But obviously, the jury gave him the benefit of the doubt on the first 3 shots. However, the jury obviously found that he had no justification to fire the second round of 6 shots. Since there was no way of knowing whether it was the first 3 shots or the 6 shots that killed Sammy, they returned guilty on attempted murder instead of murder or manslaughter. Personally, I question whether he couldn't have found a way to de-escalate the situation or use non-lethal force but I wasn't there. I am happy that a message is being sent to police about use of excessive and unnecessary force.
  23. Apparently "Daddy swore an oath" Jon Ritzheimer has turned himself in.
  24. You may not like it but yes, they have reason to be concerned. Go and google "dilbit kalamazoo" and see what you get. When dilbit leaks, it starts to separate. Volatile compounds like benzene float and evaporate. Assuming there is no outright explosion, the result is toxic vapors. The bitumen settles out and attracts any sediments in the water column. It can then sink beneath the water. They dredged the Kalamazoo River. Do you think they will dredge Lake Superior or the St Lawrence River? If there is a leak, are you going to supply bottled water to the residents of Montreal for the next 20 years? Because "they" didn't know how dilbit would behave when it leaks in water. Go back and read the NOAA report - it said they're "earning about how to clean up dilbit. Would you like your drinking water to be the place where they learn? And here's another question. Why hasn't the industry or our government cheerleaders regulators done the studies on how to deal with dilbit properly?
