As I said in-depth in another post of yours, yesterday's immigrants were not mythical angels - some worked hard, and others didn't, some kept their noses clean, and others turned to crime. Some integrated, some didn't bother to learn English. The belief that immigrants of old were fundamentally different than immigrants of today in terms of integration and work ethic is nothing more than a myth.

Omar Khadr's Sister on Hunger Strike
JB Globe replied to WarBicycle's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
You're officially an idiot. Not so much because you have a ratio of one spelling mistake per sentence, but rather that you're dumb enough to believe that CHILDREN have the same capacity to make major decisions as adults do. If Mens Rea can apply to children, hell, why aren't they smart enough to buy a house, right? I know a bunch of sub-prime mortgages who'd love to head down to your neighbourhood elementary school. -
Omar Khadr's Sister on Hunger Strike
JB Globe replied to WarBicycle's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
Question for all of you . . . How hateful and petty do you have to be to make Khadr's sister look classier than you? -
Please keep in mind that this is ONE incident, and that there are about 1.5 billion adherents of Buddhism & Hinduism. I don't want anyone thinking this is any more representative of either religion as polygamy cults in Utah are representative of Christianity.

Khadr should make us ashamed to be Canadian
JB Globe replied to Leafless's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
I think the entire idea of "illegal combatants" (as used in the "war on terror") is extremely problematic. The same definition could be used by countless authoritarian regimes as a way of denying the Geneva conventions to members of revolutionary groups within their countries. ie - Chin nationalist rebels in Burma, they can't afford uniforms, which would make it easy for the Burmese government to claim that they're not covered under Geneva. I also don't exactly see how it helps the situation to NOT be treating prisoners humanely and in accordance to international law. -
Cremation of child of mixed couple results in violence, threats
JB Globe replied to jbg's topic in Religion & Politics
I agree. Both of the articles I posted, plus your original post prove ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. But of course, the difference is that you actually think a few news articles about separate incidents constitute "proof" of something, whereas I was posting those articles to demonstrate how ignorant and flimsy your entire worldview on Islam is. -
On the movie . . . I don't know if I'll be checking this movie out, I was hoping that Maher & the director would make a proper documentary about the subject (note: proper docs can also be hilarious, they just have to approach the subject honestly) however it appears that they just went out and tried to make a film that makes organized religion look ridiculous, and used heavy-handed manipulative techniques to get the product they wanted. ie - Interviewing folks that are extreme in their views, not representative, and don't have enough media-savy to realize how ridiculous they're going to look on film (taking advantage of their nativity). It isn't as if Maher is talking to religious scholars or prominent leaders after all. Also, as this reviewer points out: "Maher takes advantage of manipulative techniques such as using subtitles or superimposed text on screen to contradict or ridicule what the participants are saying to the camera." I just find it completely disingenuous as someone who works on docs myself to be sitting there interviewing someone fully knowing that you're going to do everything you can to make them look like an idiot. If a person is foolish, you let them hang themselves, you don't need subtitles. I liken it to myself wanting to produce an American-bashing documentary and then going out and interviewing the most ridiculous and ignorant people I could find, regardless of if they were at all representative of America as a whole.

I don't think it's possible for any nation to kill all those who oppose it, I think containment is a better option. Also - are you just as willing to kill Americans who want to wage a "jihad" of sorts against the entire Muslim world?

Cremation of child of mixed couple results in violence, threats
JB Globe replied to jbg's topic in Religion & Politics
To apply JBG-approved standards of analysis, we can conclude that Christians in general are violent bigots because of this: http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2008/10/07/...an-Shooting.php And white people in general are violent bigots because of this: http://www.hounslowchronicle.co.uk/west-lo...09642-21942230/ Because, after all, nothing proves that an entire global religion or race is bad more than trawling news sites for crimes which fit into your prejudiced worldview, and ignoring articles which contradict said worldview. -
If this were a simple case of signs getting vandalized, than yeah - it would be in the realm of possibility for it to be a frame-job. But somehow I doubt it is a frame job - considering the brake wire cutting on the cars of people, including the car of the Liberal MP's campaign manager, who didn't figure out his brakes were out until he started driving. As ruthless as any political party is, I highly doubt any one would put their own people's lives at risk to frame another party - OTHER political party's people though? Looks like it's fair game.

So essentially what you're saying is white people are racists, and Christians are violent war-mongers. -
Does anyone in Toronto want the conservatives in power, again?
JB Globe replied to Rain's topic in Local Politics in Canada
Contrary to your own fringe opinion, Canadian citizens are Canadians, not foreigners, no matter where they were born. All politicians cater. Stop me if I'm saying something you don't already know. I don't see what's more problematic about Libs catering to new Canadians versus Cons catering to Anglo-Canadians. Of course, things are changing, if you watched the national two nights ago they did four reports on ethnicity and the election - while it's true that recent immigrants are somewhat more likely to NOT vote conservative, conservative support has been growing in most communities just like it has the rest of the country. Do you know why? Because (GASP!) non-white folks care just as much about "normal" issues as you do! And those are their primary motivating factors in voting. Oh, and BTW - I wouldn't necessarily call policies like the Multicultural Act catering - that's just straight government, as evidenced by how well it's worked out (and spare me the sky is falling routine - that's 30 years old, and I've yet to see another nation deal with immigration better than we do). And we all know how popular that idea is. -
It's actually no less common than incidents at Muslim places of worship.
-
Another baseless allegation, pulled straight out of JBG's rear end. Go ahead big boy - prove that you're not an idiot and back up this assertion with some facts. Otherwise it's about as solid as the following: The fact is that Jews have a disproportionate tendency not only towards oppression of Muslims but to oppression of Muslims on a mass or sickening scale.

You mean, FAR-right parties, just like the article you quoted says . . . Right?

Immigrants to Canada formerly live in huts? Really? How do you know this? Really? New Canadians say this is their motivation for coming to Canada? Okay . . . Why don't you show me where this has been said, and by whom? Why don't you show me something that proves that even most immigrants come to Canada to "steal our quality of life" How on earth would an ethnic community which is highly educated and pumping LOTS of money into the economy take away from the lifestyle of the rest of Canada? Do you understand basic economics? . . . Higher education -> Higher salaries -> More investment & taxes -> more government services Please demonstrate how more educated and wealthy people are something we don't want more of. It's unfair that people work hard in school? Why is that unfair exactly? What? Because you never wanted to bother with it? If this post is any indication of how you applied yourself in school, it's no wonder your jealous of other people's hard-earned success. Some undiagnosed learning disability not-withstanding - there's nothing stopping you from a better education (or a better post than this drivel) than effort.

American-style school shooting in Finland
JB Globe replied to kengs333's topic in The Rest of the World
You're going to have to show me why the two are connected - otherwise this is about as credible as when people said it was Marylin Manson that made those kids shoot up Columbine. I was unaware that Muslims, in general, use suicide attacks. I was under the impression that it was a tactic used by groups like Al Qaeda, The Tamil Tigers, and the Japanese airforce in WWII. Maybe I just missed all those suicide attacks carried out by the Turkish military. -
I've seen studies like this before, it matches up with my own reading on immigration, and with my own personal experiences. It makes sense, considering the high education standards required to get into Canada via the point-system - if you don't have some sort of post-secondary degree or diploma, you're just not getting in that way, hence why many immigrants are highly educated. Of course the problem begins when they get here and that education isn't recognized. Of course, all new Canadians are on their kids from an early age to work hard at school, and post-secondary isn't just an option - it's a must. Every single friend of mine from high school whose parents were immigrants came from families where ALL of the children went to university. Like I've said before it usually takes a generation for a community to establish itself in Canada and once the kids have grown up things really get rolling, if you look at immigrant communities contributions over 2 generations, you see quite clearly that this notion that immigration drains more from the economy than it adds ridiculous. Immigration, when done right, is really like a blue-chip investment in Canada's future.

Gun Crime and Violent Crime
JB Globe replied to PoliticalCitizen's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
As someone who has friends who are on ODSP, I can tell you this amount is disgustingly small and is not enough to live on in a city like Toronto. The province needs to start varying the amount they give out depending on where a person lives. $1000 goes a lot further in Thunder Bay than it does here. I highly doubt after rent, groceries and transit anyone would have more than $50 to their name, and that's after some serious penny-pinching already. There's also the issue of ODSP having access to your bank account, so say my friend (who's an artist with severe social anxiety disorder) manages to sell a painting for $300 - the government can see that and may subtract it from his payments, may suspend his payment, or if it happens enough, cut off his ODSP - basically punishing disabled people for managing for working when they can (which isn't most of the time). -
Explosion at Pakistan Marriott hotel kills 40
JB Globe replied to jbg's topic in The Rest of the World
I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before, but Pakistan was born out of the independence movement against the British Raj (along with India) and declared itself a democracy - the democratic process was never imposed on it. -
Explosion at Pakistan Marriott hotel kills 40
JB Globe replied to jbg's topic in The Rest of the World
1 - The militants seem to have been trying to target the president, whom was supposed to have been dining in the front area of the hotel. 2 - You're talking as if the government isn't concerned with attacks like this, which is an incredibly stupid comment to make (especially in light of the fact that the Prez's wife was killed by militants, and he's now being targeted). -
Perhaps you could explain to me what kind of threat China poses to Canada, and explain why they would carry out that threat. Because right now I'm looking at a military that has virtually no power projection outside if it's borders. America has a global economic empire, we don't. America has and will continually go to war in far away places to protect it's interests, we've refused to tag along before (Vietnam, Iraq) and rightly so, as of right now I don't see how China poses a direct threat to us, or any of the homelands of our various close allies, so again - why are they a threat? Again - Russia has no power projection to launch any sort of sustained attack in North America, and it's highly unlikely it's going to attack Europe - because that's the main market for it's oil. What a surprise that the pentagon thinks China's military is a threat - after all, that would mean the US gov't would have to give them more money to fight this threat. Look, the only threat China really poses is to America's dominance as the world's lone superpower. They have no plans to invade any nation, and don't look like they're positioning themselves to - and that's the key here. The issue is not China is improving it's military - ANY nation who came into a whack of dough would do that (US and Canada included) but is China positioning itself for some sort of attack (not defense, but an attack?) And all signs point to no, or inconclusive. Of course, sabre-rattling and military buildup on our side might end up becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy, it may look like to China that we're planning to go to an inevitable war with them, which of course would cause them to build up even more and . . . Then we have an arms race.

You know you're an enormous political hack when you have to blatantly lie in the opening sentence of your post. Please demonstrate how a Liberal government would completely dismantle the Canadian military as you claim. Also explain why, since they've been in power for most of the past 60 years, why this hasn't already happened. Incidents such as the Georgian crisis are relatively rare in the world today. You're overstating these "threats" in a manner that suggests paranoia. China is not a military threat - they have no capacity to launch any sort of naval invasion of any nation besides Tawain - and with the new government in Tawain being more China-Friendly, relations there are the best they've been in decades. It's true that China is projecting it's power more than in the past, but you HAVE to expect that - China, like any other country, wants its influence in the world to reflect it's economic power. It wants to be able influence global systems just like the US does. China isn't expanding its sphere of influence to Africa because it wants to rule the world - it just wants to be on the same playing field as the US. And the only reason you should be terrified of that is if you can't stand to share the superpower table with anyone else. Besides, they need our oil, and won't go to war with a nation they've investing in to build oil pipelines. Russia, while resurgent, is in no military or economic position to launch any sort of sustained military campaign against even a medium-sized country with an average military. Georgia is tiny and it's military is too. While a ship may have docked in Venezuela, most of Russia's northern fleet is sitting in dock, rusting. Their economy is as dependent on foreign investment as it is on oil - if it were to go to war, that would dry up (during the Georgia crisis new foreign investment came to a standstill, for example). Beyond strengthening our presence in the Arctic, I don't think we need to worry about Russia. I won't even comment on Venezuela being considered a military threat to Canada - it's too ridiculous. I'm willing to spend money on defending Canada, but the threats have to be REAL, not imagined. And I don't think there is any threat that's worth spending $500 billion on right now.

Keep in mind that none of these people are elected officials, they're all candidates running in remote ridings for the most part - which makes it less newsworthy. The listeria comments were made not only by an elected Con, but by a Cabinet minister. The higher up these things go, the more play they get on the news. Also consider that while these candidates were allowed to "voluntarily resign" (meaning, they were given the choice between getting thrown out, or throwing themselves out) while the cabinet minister in the listeria comment story is still in the mix.
