Harper's Arctic Policy: "use it or lose it"
AngusThermopyle replied to Ontario Loyalist's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Sure, much more so than Jean "Golf Balls" Chretien. Or how about Paul "If You Don't Support New Taxes You Aren't Canadian" Martin, while he has his ships registered under foreign flags to avoid paying...you guessed it...taxes! Like I said, irrational. -
They don't have to threaten Russia. Putin is well aware that Russia is no longer a match for the west.

Open warfare in South Ossetia
AngusThermopyle replied to moderateamericain's topic in The Rest of the World
First you quote someone on some other forum as proof of your contention, a worthless exercise at best. Then you conveniently forget to mention that countries such as China ( not a NATO member) refuse to support Russia in this matter. That is even after Russia solicited their support. You're right, some people really do see only that which they wish to see. -

you were making a good point until you went off on your irrational Harper bashing rant. -

Harper's Arctic Policy: "use it or lose it"
AngusThermopyle replied to Ontario Loyalist's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
What I was reffering to was the position the Arrow placed Canada in as regards the Aerospace industry. At that time Canada was perceived to be a talented up and comer, after...well we have the Canadarm..whoopee! -

Yes, you would know all about that wouldn't you. -

Good idea, name it after the guy who killed the Arrow and eliminated Canada as a major player in the world Aerospace industry. -
Movies, What Genre do you like?
AngusThermopyle replied to AngusThermopyle's topic in Arts and Culture
Actually yes I have. If you think it even comes close to Liverpool in the sixties with the Skin Heads and Teddy Boys amongst others running around all I can say is increase your meds. Like I said, you heal, pain passes, you can't let it colour the rest of your life. Maybe I don't think its a big deal because I fought pretty much on a daily basis when I was a kid. who knows. That sort of brings us back to A Clockwork Orange, doesn't it. Brilliant movie, perhaps one would have to have grown up during the sixties in such an area to recognize just how significant the movie actually is. Of note is the pale and pathetic American movie that attempted a similar thing, The warriors. A really bad movie with no saving graces. Clockwork Orange was socially significant, The Warriors, not significant at all. Clockwork Orange, some very good acting, The Warriors, who the hell was in it again? Clockwork Orange, superb soundtrack, The Warriors, does anyone remember the soundtrack? A Clockwork Orange, Alex, the most sociopathic lead character I can think of. The Warriors, well I'm sure you get the point. As you can probably tell I really like Clockwork Orange and truly dislike The Warriors. Someone mentioned A Dog And His Boy, that was a fun movie, I loved the ending. Another strange one was Eraserhead, early David Lynch. To this day I still don't know what it was really about. My friends and I used to head to the New Yorker repertory theater downtown London Ont. every weekend, saw some great movies there. The place was a zoo but fun, whenever they'd show Stairway To Heaven or Rust Never Sleeps the theater just became one giant party house. -
That is an interesting article, he makes many valid points. I never liked the JSS concept from the beggining, for many of the same reasons. The whole "buy canadian" concept has to change, it has hampered and crippled us for years. Back in the late seventies the US offered us ten Spruance class destroyers, we refused them. The primary reason being that the US stipulated all refits be performed in American shipyards. This was unacceptable to our Government so we passed on a very respectable force instead. Real smart of us.

And a really great one at that. Kubrick was so good at what he did. Hey, HisSelf, I spent my early years growing up in Merseyside, you think you've seen rough neighbourhoods? If it doesn't kill or disable you permanently its really no big deal, you heal after a while. I still remember watching angry dock yard workers going at it with bailing hooks when I was a kid. -
Guess what, all you guys are using the wrong name. They are not called little rat dogs, thats so incorrect. The correct term is "leash lint", okay, now lets get it right from now on.

Ah, I see now. Initially I thought you were saying the government shouldn't spend money on these ships. In some ways I agree with you, in others not so much. It would be nice if we could get them for the budgeted cost, however we do need these ships, in a very big way. That being the case, if they can't get them for the budgeted amount they'll just have to spend more on them. That simply isn't open to debate. Not unless some think its wiser to start renting them instead. This would be undesirable and unworkable for a plethora of reasons.
-
Actually thats pretty much the way I feel about it. In this case I know beyond any shadow of a doubt that the money needs to be spent, so why the delays? Unless they're actually looking for new tenders that are more in line with what they originally budgeted for them. Yeah, I was wondering that myself. I have to admit the post left me sort of confused though, it was barely readable and somewhat lacking in coherence. Perhaps I misunderstood what Topaz was trying to say.

AngusThermopyle replied to jdobbin's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I certainly did, what is it about his statement that mystifies you? -
So are you saying that purchasing new AOR's to replace our current 50 year old ones is "blowing the budget"? Even though these ships are essential for Naval operations and our Navy would be crippled without them?

You're right! Unassailable logic! Lets just pretend we've never heard of the place, that way Russia will have no desire to develop it. -

Could it have something to do with the fact that they don't oppress their people in a totalitarian manner? Or perhaps its because they don't murder their baby girls? Or could it be because they don't deny their people of the freedom to practice the religion of their choice? Maybe because they have yet to crush some of their students under tanks? You started this thread on a premise that is so very juvenile it defies belief. Many of the posts continued this trend. With the last one you clearly showed that this thread was designed solely to denigrate the Conservatives, no matter how absurd your behaviour has to be in order to do so. Either that or you honestly don't have a clue what you're talking about. For myself I'd hazard a guess that its a combination of both. -

Nice And lets not forget the Kalinin K-12. Pre WWII, tail less bomber. Nice Paint Job Where is my flying car? Not Quite What I Had In Mind -
Wrong again. The Taliban were sheltering Osama and providing safe haven for Al Quaeda training camps. That appears to be pretty involved by anyones standards. Or do you contend that none of the Taliban are Afghani's? So are you proposing that we become terrorists? So you know this eh? You must have one wicked source of information to make such a claim. That would be no defense at all. What it is actually called is resistance to occupation. In that case you're already defeated and your population is already under the boots of an occupier. I hope you'll forgive me for not heartily endorsing your plan but I just can't bring myself to believe that being occupied and oppressed is better than defending ourselves.
-
That may be true but is it really all that germain to the central problem. That problem being that our AOR's are now about fifty years old and in dire need of replacement. I spent seven years aboard the Preserver. I can tell you that we spent as much time repairing her and fabricating unobtainable parts as we did sailing her, and that was about 15 years ago. These ships are not in the "nice to have" category. They are in the we "have to have" category. Without them all our capabilities are severely handicapped, from deployment, to sovereignty patrols to humanitarian work. They may be gone temporarily but they aren't gone for good. As I said, these aren't optional, they're a necessity.

Soldiers Killed in Afghanistan

They could probably do it in a much shorter time span except for the fact that they don't want to abitrarlily execute anyone associated with it. -

Some good choices so far, you guys have reminded me of some I'd forgotten. Cant believe I forgot about 2001 for the sci fi category. Trailer Park Boys is kinda a reching choice, I'm not a huge fan of comedy so I kind of drew a blank on that one. Enemy At The Gates is another superb choice for the war category, a rather obscure one I really enjoyed is The Beast, about a T-72 crew in Afghanistan and the saga that unfolds due to the brutality of the tank commander. Amazon is a great place to find the obscure classics that just aren't around any more. My movie collection is back up to around five hundred titles again, I did have about a thousand but now my ex owns those, oh well. -
