Canadian opinions about U.S. patriots are also very interesting and easily found.
-
Oh but it is very much tyranny...tyranny by the majority. I don't understand why this concept is so readily rejected because of vaccines compared to other conflicts. Canadian "patriots" can certainly tell the difference, even if they don't agree with anti-vaxers.
-
OK....so no more U.S. truckers to deliver goods to/from Canada (many are "Trumpers")...but what about the precious economy ? Seems like a contradiction to me.
-
Canada was not shut down by the protests...there is far more economic impact from Covid restrictions...for almost two years !
-
Well, it a good thing this serious "existential threat" to Canada's economy has been dealt with and auto parts can more easily flow again. We don't know how much longer Canada could have survived !
-
Yay ! The Ambassador Bridge is now open again (sort of) and Canada is saved from economic doom. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/windsor/windsor-ambassador-bridge-police-protest-1.6350120
-
So Ontario/Canada have not been shut down because of the blocked bridge. And only a portion of that total trade volume (both directions) has been impacted because some has been re-routed. The economic hyperbole from protest critics only give the protesters more power.
-
So what ? The trucking freight and other services are just delayed or re-routed. Ontario has not been "shut down". If closing one bridge brings Canada to its knees, then there is another serious problem that goes far beyond weeks of protests. Protests are perfectly legal...actually a Charter right. A judge had to grant an injunction to stop them...after the fact. Nothing new about protests...even in Canada.
-
OK, but Canada is not shut down, despite rhetoric to the contrary. Government Covid measures have had a much greater impact than a blockaded bridge. How is that Gordie Howe International Bridge project going ? Is it blockade proof ? Michigan is not shut down either...Detroit traffic map just shows a closed Ambassador bridge. The world is not ending for workers on either side of the border. Its a peaceful protest...is suppose to be a pain in the ass by design.
-
The country is still in business. One bridge or border crossing does not/should not shut a country down.
-
1. Not so rare...I am always aroused by excellence...and Canada has its moments as well, which I respect. 2. Better designed for scale and impact for the Canadian economic and political context. Down here we just shoot leaders. The thing I don't understand is why government levels did not have a better plan/contingency to protect what is arguably the most important transportation link(s) in the country. Wasn't somebody smart enough to point out this vulnerability years ago and plan for what to do ?
-
Certainly a better execution of organized, non-violent protest than seen in many other nations, including the USA. The current protester strategy has been effective because it is non-violent and appeals to a large minority of Canadians weary of Covid restrictions as well. The economic impact is supposed to be very painful...to prompt change. It is a methodic, more peaceful approach than maybe looting and burning down cities.
-
Actually, protests and transportation blockades are very Canadian, and have been used in the recent past for economic, environmental, and First Nations causes. The current protests remain peaceful for the most part.
-
The truckers and supporters do not seem to be phased at all by impotent threats from the "authorities". The truckers know that a forced/violent removal is something government does not want to do. Just the logistics of removing disabled trucks is a daunting task even if everyone cooperated. It is great to see Canadian citizens standing up for what they believe in and having the balls to hold the line.
-
Yep....Canadian media seems to have a very short memory when it comes to the name Trudeau:
-
Of course...the protests are meant to be as disruptive as possible, using the same methods espoused by the left for their own "social justice" causes. Without disruption and economic pain points the message and focus is quickly lost, and no substantive change follows. "This is what democracy looks like".
-
Quite to the contrary, Canadians have resisted going down the violent protest spasms regularly witnessed in American media, purposely being different if only to define a separate identity. Protest critics want to associate the convoy blockades with U.S. "right wing" groups because it fits their (your) narrative...but this time it is different...and organic to Canada. Other nations are now following Canada's freedom lead. I have lived long enough to see many things and found peace long ago, being neither red or blue. Dust in the wind...

Wall Street Journal is paying attention to Canada:
-
Looks like pressure is building on this side of the border to relax/eliminate COVID mandates. Biden is worried about mid-term elections too, so he could give Trudeau the cover he needs to cancel the trucker vax mandate and get things moving again across the border.
-
Canada is doing this well...trust me...I watched it go very, very sideways (up close and personal) in 2020 after the George Floyd killing. Over 500 businesses damaged or destroyed. The incinerated police precinct building still has not been replaced. Enjoy the "peaceful" non-violent protest...it could be far worse.
-
Not the worst for per-capita deaths...1918 "Spanish Flu" was far more deadlier: ...and now, back to Canada.
-
In this instance, yes...and that's OK. First Nations have also used this tactic in the past, so it is very Canadian.
-
True in the macro-economic sense, but not for this specific protest action in Canada. What is remarkable is that Canadians have mustered together to fight tyranny on their own terms regardless of what the Americans may do.
-
Indeed...as long as the protesters hold their powder and remain "peaceful" then the government will be hard pressed to move on the children. Canadians will not accept a Waco North. The FLQ Crisis was different and far more limited...does Justin Trudeau have the balls of his father ? Methinks not.
-
Depends on the circumstances, but governments have used such tactics in the past to intimidate and affect policy outcomes. Using child welfare as leverage is hardly new in Canada (and elsewhere).
