  1. I've made no claim....I just lived through it like many other Americans (and Canadians). Your game is too little...too late.

Killing peace talks was not only expected, it was broadly supported by a large minority of Americans who wanted to prevail against the commies in theatre. Some in Canada wanted the war to continue for obvious economic reasons.

Great if you want to kill the Peace talks because Americans don't want them, then don't do in a back-room promising to bring Peace just a few months later. Make your argument in public and let the American people vote on it.

  2. Agreed.....the young ones here do not have that context, and it cannot be learned with Google.

Support your claim. That isn't a lot to ask for. In 50 years I am not allowed to say "and then Harper claimed Martial law and deported all the French people to Israel............I know I was there" That isn't true and just because I lived at the time doesn't change its history. Support your claim already.

Seems today we learned of Nixon killing peace talks. Lots of people were there at the time and they didn't know it happened. So that argument it horrible.

  3. I lived through that period. No need for me to have Shady in order to recall Carter's role in Hostage Crisis.

Yep and lets all ignore Reagan's role right? Lets just ignore it and pretend it didn't exist until of course some tape or document comes out then instead of talking about that (visa via this Nixon thread) we will talk about Clinton causing 9/11 in someway. Your guys bag of tricks is old and tired. Again show me how Carter and I quote " replaced the Shah with the current theocracy in Iran".

You don't get to rewrite history and you don't get to say "well I was there so I am allowed to rewrite history". Support the claim already.

  4. Somalia is not a U.S. state, and California is barely top ten for income per capita:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_by_income

But it is number one in terms of GDP meaning it is worth more then any other state. It also has 750 000 households worth more then a million dollars, it is so good to rich people even Romney bought himself a house there. They must be doing something right because they seem to be doing a whole lot better then Somalia.

  5. No more wrong than folks that claim the US put the Shah on the throne in 1953. But, that's not you...

No he is wrong about the Facts. Carter did not support the over throw of the Shah. That is just a lie that fits into the narrative. Don't by into Shady's lies he thinks he has the right to change past historical events to fit his world view which he does not. As I said to your earlier you have the right to your own opinions but once you start making your own facts you lose the argument.

  6. Yep. If you're "rich" in places like California, you pay 40% of your income to the feds, and 15 percent of your income to the state. So the government takes 55% right off the top. That's not including things like property taxes, other municiple taxes, and sales taxes.

Regardless, apparently some of the posters in this forum are unaware that the house of represenatatives is an EQUAL branch of government. So they have every political right to produce the budget that they feel is appropriate. I'm just glad one party is actually taking budget issues seriously. Ryan's so-called draconian budget increases federal spending by 3.5% each year instead of the projected 5%.

You pay for the right to live and have access to the Richest states in the nation. There is a reason even though Somalia has no taxes no Rich people move there. When you are done crying me a river you can pay your taxes for living in a country that has a high standard of living.

  7. Why does the US have far cheaper telecommunications then? They also have cheaper hydro. In Europe hydro is lots more expensive but telecoms are cheaper. When I was in the UK recently LTE mobile speeds were just starting to appear. They've been available in parts of Canada for years now.

Comparing the failings of one set of Private industry with another doesn't really help does it? In Canada these industries have such a high cost to get into with low density that only those with existing infrastructure can and will enter the market. This leads to an oligopoly which means price fixing costing us more. The way to break that oligopoly is to have the government get in the way somehow. They can either subsides investment or they can enter the market themselves. A mixed market for some industry is necessary take off the blinders and get out the bubble. You can still be a conservative and believe in a mixed market you know.

  8. I remember one poster from BC on this site telling me what he/she paid for auto insurance, where the system is only public and it's a lot more than what you can get in Ontario. You just have to be willing to shop around a bit.

BTW regarding power, my bill comes from one company. The only real choice I have is to go with a private provider that fixes your rate for 5 years in a contract. That's a bit of a gamble. I don't really see much of a choice in how I receive power.

Going back to cell phones, cable and Internet. If you're a smart consumer, there are many ways to play companies against each other to get a pretty good deal.

In BC the government pulled a Billion dollars out of the insurance company 2 years ago so yah thats those free market Liberals for you they can't even let a good thing work on its own. They kinda had I guess to cover their HST debts when it was repealed however their is more to that story then meets the eye. In the end in Canada on average a public insurance is cheaper that is a fact.

Considering Ontario deregulated the power industry so anyone could "freely compete" 10 years ago you can see why I say a mixed system in some industries is needed.

Canadian cell phone operates charge some of the highest rates in the world, Canadian Internet is some of the slowest and our cable operators are also our Internet operators so they cap how much you can use so that you can't get rid of your television for direct streaming. That does not sound like the free market to me. Some industries need the government to be involved. You might say you like it the way it is but even now the government is involved if nothing else then to prevent these large companies from bleeding us dry. I mean look even Tony Clement told the CRTC they had to let other Internet companies on bells lines because if he didn't Canadian Internet would never get more competitive.

  9. FDR...my favorite US President...locked up the Japanese just like we did up here in Canada. I don't think he was 'working for all Americans' at that point. But, I think you're far too obsessed with party lines. Presidents can be very much alike when push comes to shove. Kennedy nearly got EVERYBODY on the planet killed. Should we say all Democrats are reckless nuclear brinksmanship honchos willing to bet the entire farm over a stupid island? Shall we ignore ol' Nikita's role in the affair as you do with Uncle Ho...ultimately the fellow responsible for starting the Viet-Nam war? You and I both know that would be silly. Nixon...in my view...while a nasty fellow and such...was actually a rather effective President. How is your (no-doubt) Chinese made computer doing this morning, anyways?

    smile.png

The difference? They were the democratically elected Presidents of the people at the time. Not just some guy calling up another country and saying "Hey I don't care about American lives if it gets in the way of this election". That is a real difference you have hard choices to make in that office, you don't need someone out there trying to sink the nation because they think they deserve it more. I will criticize Presidents for their choices but I understand those choices are theirs and they are hard to make. Republicans shouldn't be out there trying to kill the country when the President is making those touch choices.

One party that believes in democracy the other one is for sinking it.

  10. I'll agree with you about cell phones, however, the Feds did allow new low cost carriers like Wind to compete. The problem is they have to piggyback the signal the big two paid billions to create.

I put the blame of increased Hydro rates in Ontario on the shoulders of the provincial government. The green energy initiative has made hydro exponentially more expensive. You also have a government that plays musical chairs with power plants to win votes at a cost of hundreds of millions. You can't blame the private sector for that.

You deregulate a power market and prices go up even with all the Freedom of choice you can have. Look anywhere, where it is done. Some industries have no business being private. Especially the ones the public need and that have a high cost to get into. Starting up a cell phone, Internet, or power company costs million and millions of dollars so few get in and when they are in they can price fix to make huge profits. A mixed system is what we need seriously. The governments should be involved in some industry look at auto insurance rates in Canada. There are countless examples.

  11. And any Democrat will leave your azz to swing in the breeze if taken hostage? Of course not. But, Jimmy C would.

    No halos in politics.

Again when you have a Republican running for office you better be scared because they will call up Iran tell them to hold those hostages as long as they can and then sell them some missiles as long as the hostages are released as soon as you are elected. You got one party working for all Americans and one that is looking to put them danger to gain a foothold in an election.

  12. Heh...again...you could say the same about the Democrats and war. A pre-1970s Democrat looked and smelled an awful lot like a Republican. Only with Carter and beyond did they become the polarized pair of parties we see today.

Haven't seen any evidence of a Democrat meeting with international bodies to try and prolong war and American death to win an election. I now have real evidence of a Republican doing it, have heard rumor of another Republican (Regan) doing it and just saw a Republican Presidential (Romney) candidate lie about what the president said about an attack on Americans. Again if you an American don't go aboard if a Republican really wants to win an election. They will put you in harms way to win. That is all I have seen.

  13. True enough. But, my point stands that LBJ was certainly no shrinking violet when it came to war.

Never said he was and maybe the peace talks would have fell apart on their own. Doesn't excuse Nixon from killing the Peace America wanted for his own gain. He had no business going to the South telling to kill the talks because he was going to bomb the North and get them a better deal. That was not America's best interest and it just shows if you are an American over seas when Republicans are running for government be careful because they will put your life in harms way to win an election.

  14. In the private sector, I am free to choose. In the public sector, I am not allowed to choose.

"... rigging the system... "? You mean an individual abused the power of the State for personal benefit... (I'm amazed. What's new?)

    ----

When the State uses its power, it means no choice. The State must be restricted.

Yep just look at cell phones you are free to chose any of the most expensive cell phone contracts in the whole world from 4 companies that "compete" to make sure prices stay just where they are. Am I right? How about deregulated power? Ontario and Alberta, you are free to chose from any power company yet prices rose by some 40% compared to the rest of Canada who aren't free to chose. Love me some freedom.

  15. Ummmm...no he was not the democratically elected President. JFK was shot and voila...here's LBJ raising the right hand on Air Force 1. Plenty of US troops died on LBJ's watch as well as Nixon's...and Ford's....and Kennedy's...perhaps a few during Ike's term, too.

LBJ won one of the biggest landslides in Presidential History. It was literally the largest spread in popular vote in Presidential history and the 6th largest in terms of the electoral collage. You have to go back to 1820 when no ran against Monroe to find an election that a candidate who did better.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_presidential_election,_1964

He won 61% of the popular vote. You are entitled to your own opinions but not your own facts. He won by 15,000,000 votes.

  16. America is a democracy so this is the fault of the American people and they have no one but themselves to blame for the things their governments do.

The lesson of LBJ's tapes are that recordings of government officials need to be released as they happen not 50 years after the fact.

After Nixon's tapes killed him no other President has recorded their conversations the way LBJ or Nixon did. They at least teach us their should be a law that all these conversations are recorded so we know what was happening at the time.

  17. Meanwhile, LBJ upped troop strength in Viet-Nam to its highest levels of the war. Not to mention the Communists were a wee bit of a factor in the war besides US Presidents and their peculiar antics. Nobody was wearing a halo.

LBJ was the democratically elected President at the time. The other guy was just a guy looking to kill peace talks because they might have gotten in the way of his ambitions. Lets not forget 20000-30000 Americans lost their lives after these talks were sunk.

  18. BBC is reporting with the newest release of LBJ tapes that is now confirmed that Nixon and his team interfered in 68 Peace talks leading the deaths of more Americans. What a horrible man.

Chennault was despatched to the South Vietnamese embassy with a clear message: the South Vietnamese government should withdraw from the talks, refuse to deal with Johnson, and if Nixon was elected, they would get a much better deal.

So on the eve of his planned announcement of a halt to the bombing, Johnson learned the South Vietnamese were pulling out.

He was also told why. The FBI had bugged the ambassador's phone and a transcripts of Anna Chennault's calls were sent to the White House. In one conversation she tells the ambassador to "just hang on through election".

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-21768668

Someday in the future we will learn from some documents somewhere about Reagan and the hostages. Lesson from this is don't be an American over seas when a Republican is running for the Whitehouse. You are just a number to them and if they need to use you to get to the Presidency well they could care less.
